I think you should rip out the 3 shrubs you already have there and plant 4 fig trees.

It'll be fine to plant it where you have it just move it down the hill a little

Andy,

I had the same problem. It doesnt take much to correct the problem. Go to home depot and get some of that tall(they make short and tall) black plastic landscape edging. Put it on the uphill side of your bed. It will divert the water and problem solved.

Heres what im talking about...

Ken,

Question: How do you stop the tree from moving in the breeze and breaking the new roots. Im doing an airlayer for a friend and I put it in a pot, but the wind kept breaking the new roots as they tried to dig in.

That's my point. The only one who would have motive for bidding up that tree is the guy selling the other tree. And all Ebay will do im sure is a slap on the wrist.

Maybe it's being bid up by the other seller of the potential RDB as payback?

I have never seen anything like what's going on over something as inconsequential as a plant. That Cajun fig guy is reporting he received a death threat from somebody over what is and isn't a RDB.

Barry,

Between RDB and JT you could make thousands!

I would also like to use this post to give props to drivewayfarmer for offering his surplus RDB's a few months ago at a reasonable price. Thank you again!

My best luck this year has been with rooting in water. Drop the cuttings in water. When you see root initials(maybe a small root or 2, put it in soil. It's the only method i've rooted with 100% success. No tents. No humidity concerns. No problem.

Everything I've done a 1 inch girdle on has produced lots of new growth below the girdle. Just my limited experience.

I will say that it's a great way to get 2 trees for the price of 1.

Here's the update on this one. I clipped the top off of my Celeste air layer since my end game was to shorten the tree and the new growth the pushed from the bottom took care of that. The air layer was clipped very prematurely. There were initials but no roots. I took the top, threw it in some MG soil in a pot and left it in the shade. Quite frankly, I forgot about it. Well, it looks like its doing just fine. It's not really an air layer and not really a cutting. But its about to push new growth from everywhere.

Well here's the update. Started on 07/30. This is a double main trunk air layer. I will air layer no other way going forward. Soaked plain old peat moss (not sphagnum) in water in a zip top bag for 2 hours so it absorbed water. Cut a clear plastic bottle in half. Squeezed out the peat moss and filled both sides of the bottle. Clamped it back together with zip ties. Wrapped in foil. Used a "chip clip" as a way to hold the air layer in place. Watered maybe once a week when I thought it needed it. Important to note that i did not do a thing to the bark(thanks for the suggestion Martin). I made sure each had a node that went into the air layer but bark was untouched.

A nice side bonus, the main trunk below pushed out some nice growth where there was none during this time. Im going to leave these on for a few more weeks.

Also thanks to Jon @Encanto for posting the info on his site for the hand hildong end of it.

Ok...So I got a little too excited and picked this one a bit early. The bottom of the fig was dead ripe and the top could have used another day. I cut it into quarters so I could eat the ripe bottoms to give it a true judgement of flavor

This is a vigorous grower, figs don't seem to split (we've had 3 days of rain here while this was ripening, and produced a good amount of figs for only having 3 branches when I acquired it.

I just air layered a big chunk of it off so I will have 4 cuttings that are available(not green wood). Im happy to send them out in "2"s

The taste was as sweet as if not more than a Celeste but with more fig flavor than a celeste is probably the best way to describe it. Also note that the middle has some red in it which I believe a traditional Brunswick does not have

Bob,

I've got 1 in ground that is growing like a weed with only a few figs on it which only formed as a result of pinching. The one pictured above is in a pot and I have done nothing to it other than fertilize it and watch it grow and it's pretty "figged out" for a 1 year old tree.

This is the first fig tree that I ever purchased(april of this year)I was going to wait until tomorrow but we were about to get slammed with rain(we did). Taste was figgy and jammy at the same time. Less sweet than a Celeste but might be my favorite so far. This tree was from easytogrowbulbs.com. I bought 3 and all are exceptionally vigorous and not a hint of FMV as you can see in the photos. I though unfortunately gave one away to someone who literally killed it in a week. Im not too happy about it. Of the two I have left, one is in ground and is being grown as a bush and the other which you see pictures of below is being left alone to become a tree.

Barry,

It's your tree...I'm just keeping it company. If it tastes as good as it looks i'll get some cuttings out there. I already have some going out to a member on Wednesday. It's actually a pretty healthy tree these days. Signs of FMV? Yes, but 14 new branches and 20 figs says it's doing just fine! You can see how much healthier the new growth is by looking at the leaves of the last 2 pics. You can see the old ones show FMV...The new ones? Nice a clean.

Thanks to the_celt for the suggestion to try the high nitrogen fertilizer. It has worked miracles on my FMV trees.

I had 20 figs on this tree. I air layered a branch that had about 8 of them. Who knows whether they make it. ONLY 1 split while green. I took off 5 that were undersized so that they can focus on the remainder. That leaves me 14 shots at trying this one. It's a strong grower even with FMV and if the figs are great then im a happy guy. I'll now refer to this one as BLBrunswick. Im excited to eat figs off of this one.

What do you guys think of my rooting box?

Cuttings are in a MG seed/cutting starter formula in a blue solo cup with lots of holes in the bottom of each.

The top is two plastic drawers I found in the basement and cut a side off of each to make a slide.

The bottom is a slotted on the sides and bottom plastic shallow bin. All of this is placed in the shade of my sugar maple.

I have cuttings in there that are important to me so I do NOT want to lose a single one.

Look OK? Anything I should do differently?

PS: dont be fooled by the leaves. This picture was taken right after I put the green cuttings under the cover.
