Hi All,

Here in Calgary we had snow for three days and we had a lot of tree damage!
My three figs didn't freeze but two of them lost all their leaves.
My big Jerusalem I cut back and put the cuttings into a freezer bag and put in the crisper for spring.
My KADOTA lost it's leaves and should go dormant?
Mt Brown Turkey looks like nothing ever happened!

These are not brebas, the fruit looks like it's on new growth.
I will cut it back some but not a lot.
Just to even it out on top, also do I can start some cuttings to give go the neighbours.

Hi Guys and Gals,

This is me with my Jerusalem fig tree. This year it produced 10 figs and I have picked a few already. They are ver y nice tasting and sweet.
Now, I want to cut it back.
But, I'm not sure if I cut it back too far it will now produce next year.
I was thinking of cutting it back to where my hand is.

Hi everyone,

My Kadota started growing again. It finally dropped the leaves at the end of October and had about a month break. Now it's growing like crazy.
Will it be alright?
I moved it to the basement from the garage because it's cold again.

My Kadoda fig still has buds opening up and browning leaves at the same time.
Should I be doing the shuffle?
We had some snow and cold weather here in Calgary, so I put it in the garage.
Right now its 10C and very sunny.
Should I put it out again and let the frost give it, it's cold kiss?
Will the buds be killed?

I would never get any fruit or any fruit worth noting!
Here in Calgary our sprIng is terrible!
We can get hails d snow!
So that is why I am trying to get some good fruit this year!

It is young, no more than 4 years old.
I cut it back hard, to get good strong roots and trunk.

I brought in my Kadota fig into my bird room at the end of December.
Look at the growth already!
It had 3 months of cold and darkness.

This year the figs may get a chance to ripen?
Last year I brought it in at the end of February 
and by the end of September the figs were not ripe.

Water it ones a month and only a cup ful.

Also I will bring it in at the beginning of February to give it a head start.

By getting a chill, I meant that some new growth died back.
Nothing ever freezes near that side.

Is it too much?

Last winter I had it of to the side of the garage and with the opening and closing of the doors, it did get a chill! 

This time it is against the wall of the furnace room and it is the warmest part of the garage.

All I need to do is to remove the blanket and the box box on top to water it.

Yes I have.
I wanted more dirt around the root ball,
so it does not freeze in the garage.
I lost two other trees last winter,
and I hope with more soil it won't happen again?

I am going to leave it.
This morning I found some wire and made an " S" hook.
It's still plyable to get it to grow up instead of side ways.
That is why I was going to cut it off.

Hi Guys!

I have a nice branch that is about is about 14 inches long and green.
Would I be able to put it in water to root?
Or is it too late the season?
Do I have to let dry or harden off first?

I don't know how I am going to store it for the coming winter?
I had it in a box with news paper around it and a blanket on the box,
in the garage.
This past winter was terrible, we had eveything from -35C to +15C.
The poor tree did not know what to make of it?
No wonder half of it froze?
I am going to get some sponge and wrap around it, then a blanket and
then put it in a corner.

My only survivor from the winter, a Kadota fig.
Half of the tree was dead and I had to keep
cutting back till I found green wood.
 
Let's hope the 5 little figlets get ripe enough to eat.

Jerry, Sorry, I can't offer anything on that but maybe some of our Canadian friends will chime in for you. If you find some that survive the cold in Calgary that would be one cold hardy Prickley Pear.
 
No problem "Saxonfig", I just want to find some to grow in the house. 
I don't think so either that they would survive outside in Calgary.

Here is something differant.
It's an Epiphyllum.
It's part of the Christmas cactus family.
I received a big cutting from a friend.
I am letting it callus over for three weeks before I plant it.
The flowers are huge, about six inches across when open.
This variety has orange/yellow flowers.
Anybody here grow these?

Would I have to remove any figlets off mu Kadota also, if some grew this year?
My tree is not a cutting, it is about four years old, but did lose 2/3d's of it growth due to freezing. See pictures below.

Jerry, sorry to hear of the loss of fig trees. I'm glad you were able to salvage the Kadota, you did a great job, I have a soft spot for the Monrovia Kadota fig, I like it very much, how was your experience with it in Canada? I too lost a few trees, perhaps to cold and by giving too many figs last year, wish you well, Sergio in NJ.

The experience has been fine, but they are pricey here, $55.00 for the plant.
We now have two new Lowes here in Calgary, so I will see if they will have any and if their prices are lower?

Yes, the garage is unheated.
They were boxed up and had newspaper for insulation.
The problem is the extreme temperature changes we had this year.

Hi Guys,

I haven't posted here for a while, just looked in a couple times.
This winter has been terrible for my figs.
I have only one survivor, my Kadota.

The two others froze/thawed/froze/thawed/froze, or something like that.
Here in Calgary we have had every temperature extreme possible.
It can go from -25C to +15C in six hours, that is a 40 degree differance,
all because of the Chinooks we get.

My Kadota is now only about 24 inches tall, all the branches freeze dried out.
I had to cut it back hard, and now it has 12 inches of new growth.

Hope everyone had better luck than I did.

I have two cuttings off my Kadota and the little figs are getting bigger.
Will this help or hinder root growth?
Should I leave them on or take them off?

Well the weather is still mild and the fig buds have opened up.
Does not look like the tree will go dormant.
 
There are small leaves on the branches now.
So do I bring it in and let keep growing?
Will this weaken and kill the tree?
 
I can put it in my bird room where there is plenty
of light all year round.
 
I have my mystery fig cutting in there and it's doing well.
 
Help guys what should I do?
