that's impressive nelson.   i've got two sals el from the same plant, theyre' about like yours, but a bit stockier from being outside.

aren't these all the same fig?

they never go dormant here, so the flash freezes kill them to the ground every year.  this year i'm heaping woodchips/leaves around them. 

this is my 2nd year.  i have one tree that's seen 2 winters here.  the rest are only a bit over a year old.  i'll post some pics in a few days.

even my first year cuttings are all making figs now, with the exception of lsu hollier and alma.  i do think those are starting to put tiny figs out at the top, and i should get a crop.  some of my 3 node cuttings have grown to semi-respectable bushes this year.  3 months left in the growing season and they're all cranking right along :).

i look at myself in the mirror now, and i realize i am a fig crackhead.  the shame!

jsulda, looked at your site.  beautiful work you do :).

you got some great looking plants nelson :).

she's in the ground on her own right now.  i do have a shadecloth cover over her for a few days to give the roots a chance to adjust.

what about the taste vs mbvs?

your unknown plant, as i recall, has been LOADED with figs.  tell us about the taste :).  i have a lot of black figs, and i'm hoping i can identify your unknown a bit later when my figs start coming in.

looks like they're going to be getting a good plant.  go ronde!  my ronde is actually beginning to put on figs :). 

well, i am going in the ground with the black madiera tommorrow, come hell or high water, to sink or swim just like all my other figs.  this winter i'll make sure it has special protection if it's still alive.

i got great plants from rolling river.

all i do is put a tag on each tree... what it is and who i got it from.  otherwise, there's really not much else you can know.  you buy/trade figs, and you are taking the person who is selling/trading with you's word for it, and unless there are substantial differences, like a supposedly gold fig tree giving you purple figs, you'd really have no way to ever know any differently.

on the issue of er doctors being terrible, i am an er nurse.  our focus is not on long term care.  it's on seeing that your airway doesn't close and you don't drop dead.  otherwise, you have to follow up with long term care.  there is no way in the world we can possibly answer all the questions regarding medication, etc, in the short window we see you.  it sounds to me like you got good care :).  the doctors were probably more focused on the patient having a heart attack in another room, or the person they were going to have to intubate.  that's just the way it is..  believe me, it's more often than not absolute hell for us too.

that white fig juice triggers an incredible skin reaction in me.  i avoid it all at cost.

wow.  after reading these posts, it's certainly wonderful to know that i don't qualify as a fignut :).  maybe if i can collect another 100 varieties?

no lsu fmv here.  all my lsu figs are doing well.  my lsu giant celeste is putting out some amazingly huge leaves, by far bigger than the other figs' leaves.  i was worried my alma was fmvish early this spring, but it snapped right out of it and it's zooming.  hollier is also another vigorous variety.

this is discrimination.

sal, if the soil/fertilizer you have grows ever other fig so well, how can this fig possibly be so deficient?  i think the answer doesn't lie in nutrients.  my black madiera has sat right alongside figs getting the same care, and they've all exploded with growth.  i just can't buy the nutreint deficiency theory.  something is preventing the meristem cells from dividing.

i am gonna take my tape measure and record the heights of a couple of my faster growing plants, and i 'll do it again in a week :P.  then we'll see who's really pouring it on :).

i say we know why this is such a rare variety.  it basically sucks :).

the shape of the leaf would collect less sun given the same area, as opposed to a celeste.  my stella is probably about 2 1/2 feet tall, all new growth above the ground.  just doesn't have the vigor of the truly fast growing varieties.  maybe this fall, when it gets a bit cooler, it will be another story.  that's only a guess on my part.

i am thinking that the trees with stella like leaves don't like the heat as much.  mine has grown farily well, but it's not in that all out grow mode.  i got mine from one green world as well.  no figs yet, but that isn't unusual for me at this time of year in small plants.
