I heard he got all sucked into parenthood, still has most of his figs, although he's is battling through an exceptionally cold winter.  He expects to be back around again when the littlest one is up, walking and talking, which is hopefully this year.

Seriously, though... The garage has a number of 6'-8' tall trees laid down sideways through it this year.  Several stacked along the walls.  It's tough to get in and out of the cars and to load the kids in, but that's the price we pay for being fig nuts, right?

And... this is one of several reasons folks recommend against bottom heat.  64 degrees is fine, it just might take a little longer to strike roots.

A huge mistake is using Norton and McAfee products.  You're better going with Avira, Avast or AVG.

Greg, the vast majority of system infections start with a user browsing the web using any browser these days, regardless of who makes it.  Again, entry point to infect is typically browser plug-ins that are present on all systems, regardless of OS:  Acrobat, Java, Flash.  If you want to research a typical variant of one of these types of malware, go read up on "Pidief", which is often used to exploit the Acrobat/PDF plugin of any browser.  The three plug-ins I just listed exist in nearly any browser on a Windows system, often are also found in MacOS, even found in your major favorite Linux distros like Ubuntu, Debian, FC, etc. 

Browser hackability is important because it expands what an anonymous website is able to do to your system after, for example, exploiting one of the aforementioned plugins.

This isn't to say that we don't see typical attacks these days by email, etc...  They still happen.  I discovered a new variant of Kryptik today in a crafty email targeting myself and a coworker, it originated from a major metro area of South America. 

The internet is a dangerous place these days... especially if you don't know intimately what's out there and how things work behind the scenes.....

Not trying to call you out, Greg, but Chrome is just as hackable as is Safari as is Firefox as is Internet Explorer, really.  Thinking to the contrary is outdated by 5-10 years.  Chrome was proven to be insecure once again a few months back when Google did their routine offering of large sums to find anyone that could hack it with very specific guidelines, and it was hacked the first day.  More info on that:  http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/google-gives-man-60k-hacking-chrome-368666 - and it's not the first time that this has happened, several people have proven that Chrome is extremely exploitable a number of times in the past. 

Don't fall into the Mac-user mentality of "I'm safe because what I use isn't hackable".  It's just not the case.

This is the reality:  It doesn't matter much what browser you use, your surfing/usage patterns are more important than what you use and/or use to surf.  Your major, glaring vulnerability isn't so much your choice of web browser, it's the add-ons you have installed on the browser - Java, Acrobat Reader, and Flash being the big three which are responsible for the vast majority of drive-by infections, the most exploitable elements of your surfing experience.  Just disabling the add-ons in your browser drastically decreases your risk of being infected with the 10-ton elephant in the room (drive-by malware).

Firefox has the greatest potential to be most secure if you're using the NOSCRIPT add-on with it, which will kill the vast majority of XSS/drive-by scripting routines that attempt to exploit the aforementioned plugins.  There are a couple of plugins for Chrome that act similarly, but aren't as effective.  And just using NOSCRIPT isn't good enough - you need to be smart about how you use it, understand how it works, etc.

Knowledge is your friend in the new millennium.

Run a full scan on your computer.  If you have malware on your computer causing this, I would almost guarantee that MWB will find it.

On the MacOS vs. Windows vs. Linux (and or Mac vs PC) argument... I work in systems security as a profession, and I'll be the first to tell you that Mac is just as vulnerable these days, but the infections on Mac are wicked sick and often go undetected because the users don't know what to look for and think they're immune to attack.  Unfortunately, now that major corporations like Google require their staffers to use Mac, the hacking world is making more of an effort to target them. 

If you want to see examples of self-installing, no-password-required nastiness that has been targeting Mac the last 12-18 months look up:

* OSX/Crisis
* Wirenet.1 Backdoor
* Flashback Trojan

Something else you need to watch out for is bundled Trojans.  The Bad Guys are injecting malicious software into legitimate installers as well - one example from end of 2012 targeted users of VKMusic4 - malicious software was bundled into the installer for that legitimate software title and infected a lot of places, ran up a lot of monetary losses for folks.

So... Hate to break the news to y'all Mac users but ... you aren't much safer.  If anything, you're worse off, because you don't know what to watch out for, and this stuff installs without your consent or knowledge.  Windows users might even have a leg up now because they have ample titles at this point to keep you clean.  While it's novel that Apple is using blacklisting to prevent the latest rounds of zero-day Java DBM attacks you'd encounter while surfing the web... that only goes so far.

Just sayin'.

Tough to really say what it is until you show some completely ripe fruit, inside and out, with some kind of size reference (ruler, coin, etc.)  When I say completely ripe, I mean, ripe to the point that it's soft and supple, and when you break it off the tree, no sap appears at the stem.

If you have a latex allergy, the sap can be deadly, depending on your level of allergy.  Many people react to it - including myself - if I eat an almost-but-not-quite-ripe piece of fruit that saps when picked, my throat swells up, and I'm not even allergic to latex.  It doesn't do much to my skin.

This is kid #2, kid #1 is 2-1/4 yrs now and was a very easygoing girl, sleeping easily 12 hours per night by 7 weeks. This new little guy is trumping her already on a solid sleep/feeding schedule at only 2-3 days old, we hope it stays this way.

We are lucky to have received an awesome book with the first kid that armed us with incredible scheduling tools which had us both sleeping at least 5-6 hours trough the night within days of leaving the hospital. Best gift ever, the book: Moms On Call (for 0-6 months) / http://www.momsoncall.com

The one most important trick we've learned is what Bill mentioned: alternate feelings. If you each take every other feeding, you each get at least 4-5 hours sleep between... That, and hand off to the grandparents or any unfortunate bystander nearby, when possible ;)

I don't think he has FMV yet, and hopefully he can avoid the RKN also. ;). I expect he will be bitten by the fig bug like his sister, though...

So, we weren't expecting him this soon, he was a few weeks short of being totally ripe, but he came nonetheless.  Our son was born two afternoons ago.  Another fig lover enters the world. 

Weighed in a small under 6# but fully developed, totally healthy, and he's already an eating fool.  I didn't get my cuttings out this week as expected due to this (sorry y'all), but I have the next 2 weeks off to try and get it done.

Hey Dan, the only way to counter the BS is to stick around and call people on it.  You've got the better nose, my friend, the forum needs you for that.

I'm sort of glad I've missed out on all this crap, but ... one thing I still have the ability to do is call a spade a spade.  Doesn't matter whether it's some a-hole taking UCD cuttings and selling them on ebay or taking cuttings from members and selling on ebay or taking cuttings from a purported RdB "a neighbor has" and selling 'em on ebay, it's always something.  With the exception of one or two members here or there, it's always coming from the less-than-year-old crowd (who probably think I'm an "elitist" too, such utter horsekaka), and ... the old timers need to stick around, man. 

Brush it off.  Let the shady people take a walk, no need to walk for them.  We all learn the true merit of folks in time.  Give it some time for the truth to come out, chill in the meantime till then.

PS - I wish the shady, no-good jackasses out there understood what homewreckers they can be.

I owe some cuttings to a few people.  You'll know you're one of those people if we've talked about trading or me sending you cuttings either in a post on the forum, by Private Message or by email - or, in some cases, I've told you in person when you stopped by to pick up a free tree.

If you are one of those people I've talked to the last 12-18 months who is expecting cuttings from me, either by trade or for free, please, I need you to reach out to me sooner than later.  I just took inventory of cuttings and I'm ready to start pruning to ship things out within the next 10-14 days or so. 

Sadly, my memory is like a window screen.  But I never lose a PM or email - I'm just buried under so much that it's not reasonable to go back through it all.  So ... I need your help.  I can send a list by Private Message.  I have one person who has first priority this year, but I'm trying my best to fulfill where I can.

**Note: I don't have cuttings of the unknown local some suspect is Black Ischia right now.  I'm also NOT handing out freebies to newbies or anyone I haven't explicitly made an offer to in the past.  This isn't a "free cuttings" offer to everyone, sorry!**

Welp, I guess we'll see?  I let them naturally thaw out over the following 6-7 hours above freezing; rechecked the pots, all are thawed.  Going to tally up what I have this weekend and get lists out to a couple of folks I owe to, and go from there.  I'm going to invest in larger pots for my prize figs this year, and will probably end up airlayering most of my crops to finally (hopefully) kill off the RKN issues a small portion of my trees have had... new pots, new soil, new everything... hoping for the best.

Ghost/Jolokia used to be the hottest, but apparently the Carolina Reaper has unseated it by a considerable margin.  I actually just sent the pepperheads some ghost pepper salt with some other goodies.  Three or four grains of that salt and your mouth is lit up for 5-10 minutes.  Good finishing salt for sashimi.

And I might be interested in that superhot smokey pepper you're talking about ...

@ Bill, pepperheads!  I found a couple that live in Louisville that loooove hot peppers, heirloom peppers, etc.  They mostly grow superhots.  Don't get me wrong, I know they're way SW of you, but ... it's closer than ATL!  ;)

Are most of you folks posting talking about in-ground or pots?  My in-ground trees have been able to survive below-zero temps.  The ground never freezes more than an inch or so deep, though.  All of the (30-35) trees I'm worried about are mostly in 3gallon pots, and the soil in the pots was fairly stiff...

Yeah, Bill!  Our daughter turned 2 end of October. Little boy due start of February.  Probably calling it quits after that.  There's a reason I haven't been around - crapload of house remodeling and other crap going on right now in preparation.

I might be the biggest idiot ever, but ... I couldn't make it back to my trees in time.  I had to travel out of town for a week, and didn't have time to move all of my pots indoors.  We had a night three days ago where there was rain, then temps dove down to 27 F, with about 8 hours at temps below freezing.  All of my pots/soil, which had been well-wet were pretty much frozen.  I'm hoping that the dormant trees could handle those kinds of temps and the soil in their pots being frozen.  Most had roots sent into the ground, so maybe if I don't cut them out, I'll be fine?

I'm keeping an eye on two of my Loquats which were also left outside, they still had leaves on and still have leaves, and don't have roots into the ground... maybe I'll get lucky?

I'm going to take cuttings this week and get them out to friends "just in case". 

Curious to hear if anyone else has had their pot farm survive temps like these?

Ah, this explains why I've been getting hit with PMs again about this fig.  I don't think you folks know what stuff you stir up when you dig up old threads ;).  I got three different messages today, starting around 8:30am.  I was like, "what the hell?", so I checked the forum to see if the thread got bumped by someone.  Sure enough....

A couple of people have this variety rooted, I have one sprout that I'm overwintering indoors right now. I  never made it back around to the parent tree to talk to the owners.  Too much other stuff going on to deal with that (baby boy coming in less than 8 weeks).

Will keep this thread updated when/if fruit arrives this year.  We'll see!  If cuttings are available, I'll post a new thread on the forum.  Anyone reading, please hold off on email messages or private messages till you see a separate thread offering cuttings (Because I've got major CRSS - "can't remember sh** syndrome" - so I'm bound to forget.)

Either way, I'm stoked that my new Togiharu hammered Damascus Santoku gets here before that day, just in case some idiot religious zealot decides to make the end happen.  I want to make sure I have the joy of some awesome slicing action before then.  Too bad all the figs left on my tree won't ripen, I could start by slicing them.  Maybe it'll be some zombie slicing instead.

Who knew that Negronne wouldn't ripen a second crop down here?

Sorry, but that signature line is huge. It is generally considered bad "netiquette" to have a signature longer than the average post. I remember a decade ago, some forums would ban people for having a signature longer than three lines.
