Hello All!

I came here, SPECIFICALLY, to start (or find) a thread just like this one!!!

I've been bit with this fig obsession since 1998, the year my Dad passed away, mostly in desperation of wanting to keep the fig tree he planted in my yard alive. Ya see, I never took the time to learn the details and to be honest, I'm not even certain that he learned as much about them as I did since that year. And perhaps, I have a long way to go yet.

This past winter was BRUTAL, I was worried all winter long with the arctic temps we got blasted with week in and week out, all I could do was hope for the best. Well, I'm about 90% certain I lost my entire fig collection, about 45 pots in all, which included approximately 30 different varieties that have been accumulated over the past decade by various means. Mostly from the great members of THIS forum, swapping out cuttings, and buying about a dozen over the last couple of years as well. I was most excited about acquiring my Panache just last summer. Well, I'm so tired I'm pretty sure I'm done....for now anyway. I'm close to retiring from my career and pretty sure we'll be relocating to Tn. in as little as 2 yrs. I suppose it would have been a p.i.t.a. anyway trying to move 50 pots so maybe this was a sign???

Very frustrating day to say the least, I spent about 4-hrs out there today in hopes I'd see some positive signs while unloading pot by pot out of the shed but nothing real encouraging. I think the larger pots MAY have some life in them but most all of the branches are pruned up and dead so I'll have to cut them back. The ONLY good news to come of the day, SURPRISINGLY, was my 4 in-ground figs appear to have survived. I had plenty of die back, and one has a little bit of mold on the limbs but otherwise they look alive.

Hope the others here fared better than I!!!

I'm about 99.9% certain that is deer damage. For whatever reason those sob's like raking their racks up against the younger saplings, I know this cuz I saw them doing it last year. I had a few young trees in similar condition and ya know what I think they're all still alive, maybe one limb out of a half dozen got snipped off. BTW- The younger ones will also eat the tips and even unripe figlets.

The GH you have pictured above, you said is 16' at the center but what is the height of those crossmembers?   Just trying to figure out if I can get my RV in one of those at one end. :D

No sir I don't.....hoping you are correct. Although I tossed two of them away after seeing no signs of green/life when scraping the bark down low. I double checked the root ball too and it was pretty dead, however the 3rd pot while checking the root ball, I did find some new root growth. I don't know if those roots let to weed seed or the good stuff so I repotted with a batch of 5:1:1 I had and tossed it into an airpot to boot hoping between the mix and pot it will invigorate new growth. After seeing this I decided to leave the rest alone for another month, just in case!

My cuttings are making progress but I wont need those pots for a while.

Well, I think I may have screwed up this past winter by not checking the stored pots in my shed. I had them stacked two to three levels high that I simply didn't want to be bothered in moving stuff around just to check the soil. Long story short, I THINK I may have lost nearly half my stock (19 pots) due to what I believe may have been dry soil. I don't think it was any colder this winter than normal so I refuse to think it was the cold, I did have some dieback but still, 19 pots?!?!?!?

I suppose it's still possible that they're still dormant, especially since some were up potted but I'm not too confident that is the case, what say you guys???

Mike if it's not too much trouble, can you take/post up some photo's of the fittings used to attach the wood frame to the conduit?


Jimmy, I'm leaning towards 12' wide......to be honest, I'm not quite ready to move forward on this yet but yea we can compare notes. Regarding cost, I can tell you Mike above came in well under $1000 for his 10x18.


BTW- regarding the GH in your first link, that is the nicest GH I've ever seen that was fairly priced!  When you look at what Costco offers on their website for almost twice the price and not nearly the square footage, it's a no brainer. When it's time to relocate, I'd actually consider something like that!

HungryJack- by chance, do you have any photo's of your setup?


I'm looking to build one to have a workstation setup/propagating, growing 1-3 yr old fig trees since we've been having this crazy weather I feel my trees are behind a bit, and also potted fig storage in the winter. I was also going to look into using black plastic drums full of water as a means to regulate the temp inside. Thoughts?


Jimmy, I don't have the link handy but I'm looking into buying a pipe bender ($50 each) specifically designed for building high tunnels, however, each bender is width specific.........what width were you leaning towards?

It's a very interesting idea, I have 2-3 in-ground trees I'd be willing to try this technique since I cant stand how tall the one gets.....

I've been considering the 10x12 for a few yrs now, the problem I'm having is coming up with an idea for a slightly raised foundation. What are you guys typically seeing used for the base foundation???

The lower portion of my property where I'd be placing this is prone to some mild flooding (6-12") once maybe twice per season, I was thinking of using 6x6" pressure treated timber???  

Do you think the weight of the 6x6 timber would be enough to keep this thing from blowing apart?

I've seen it done with other types of trees but never with figs, what a great idea!

Anyone familiar with the technique?  Are they just tying the limbs together with zip ties and letting them marry up naturally or are they cutting a section of bark from both limbs where they touch, almost like in grafting?

I might have to give this a try this summer!  Love the idea of having white & dark fig growing in together in the same pot.

I have an air layering question, I bought some rooter pots and put them to use late in the season. I've checked all three rooter pots and they all seem to have nice root growth but not sure if I should risk snipping them off now and wait til next year???

I'm asking cuz I'm not sure if they're on their way to going dormant already or not......I don't really have much air layering experience....yet! :D


Any guidance would be appreciated!

Hello Gang!

Well, I'm ecstatic to report that I picked my first ripe CdD this morning. I received these cuttings from UCD back in 2007, iirc.

I saw one ripening almost a week ago and decided to keep watch, well, after forgetting to look for two days cuz of working late I was happy to see them ripe this morning before leaving for work!!! I expected only one but was happy to find two ready for picking, the ONLY nit was they were just barely and partially eaten by 'something'.

I remember seeing a pick of this particular fig many years ago and thinking it was absolutely beautiful, loved the shape AND the blood red interior!!!

Well, I'm even happier to report, like Herman, I have found my new benchmark for fig flavor. Folks, after 10 years of fig growing, THIS fig is wonderful!  The flavor practically made my toes curl!!! LOL!

My wife who really isn't crazy about figs at all, even loved the flavor! The one issue she has with figs is the texture, particularly the tiny seeds, she defines them as sand, I tell her it's the fruits character and love it! However, the CdD doesn't really have that gritty feel, but man the flavor is outstanding!!!

Just had to share, if y'all are taking this hobby serious, definitely make an effort to grab some CdD cuttings!!!

For those in the NNJ area, what's the latest you would consider air layering?!?!?

Also, I see the OP just scraped the bark instead of peeling a portion off, is that optional or did I just screw up my first air layer last week? LOL!

In all the years I've been at this, this season is the FIRST time I've been picking ripe figs almost daily in the month of August. It started about 10 days ago, in all the years prior, it was primarily September and even as late as first week of October, weather permitting.

Overall so far, I'm very happy with what we've picked, decent looking and average to above average in taste.

My first was given to me by my father back in 1995-96, still have it but it's an unknown. ;~(

To think I had ZERO interest in it's upkeep at the beginning, he'd come over and handle it, never made fruit cuz it'd die every winter. If he could only see it (and me) now, thanks to forums such as this one, I've done well.

Hello again fig lovers!!!

I just got done unwrapping my four in ground trees, other than a couple inches at the tips, I'm happy to report all is well!!

I guess mother nature felt bad for ruining our crops with the hurricane/tropical storm last September so she threw us a bone with a mild winter. :)


I have TONS of cuttings of mostly my 'family' tree but a handful of other varieties that I'd love to share/trade with others this spring. Any one having a fig get together this early/mid spring?

What would have been my most productive year, I believe, on my family tree wound up being a disaster due to TS Irene and the additional EIGHT INCHES of rain we've had since Irene blew by. The potted figs did OK, some seemed fine and others split right in half. Before we know, it'll be time to winterize and repeat next season. Hope y'all outside of this region fared better than I/we did in the NE this late summer.

Since you brought up insecticides, I agree and don't like spraying by trees with them but what about those ant bait stakes you drive into the ground???

I have seen the sob's crawl under there already but since it's sitting on a bed of gravel there shouldn't be any burrowing underneath. I was going to cap off the end so they couldn't easily get under but was then concerned that they might try harder digging through the crushed gravel. At this point, I'm just going to keep trapping and shooting the critters.

Ironically, I can be a softy sob myself, I just bought some netting on Monday and immediately covered all my potted trees. This morning when I went out to water them I found a chipmunk all wrapped up and knotted up good at one end. When I went to investigate the lil bugger was still alive but probably choking itself out lil by lil......so I cut it out and nursed it for a little bit relocating it near the house so the kids wouldn't step on it by accident and left it some water and melon. I didn't think it was going to make it but checking back during lunch time I don't see it anywhere. Now if it just keeps paws off my crop it'll live to see another day. lol

Chipmunks will be a serious problem for me if they discover the flavor of figs, I have yet to catch one eating a fig, aside from watching it climb up a tree. I have an entire generation of them living immediately behind my home. I'd say there's gotta be at least 2 dozen running about.

I don't know what that particular model is but I have a Gamo pellet rifle that came with a cheapo scope that works great. Since buying it, I've easily killed 4 groundhogs, all head shots. IIRC, it was under $150.

Wow, lots of posts since I last checked.

After looking it up on Google, yes, I agree the grey bird is a mocking bird. Where do y'all buy your netting?

I was thinking about going to my local growers to see if they had any scrap netting that I could cut down to size for each tree/shrub.

As for the Ant Bait above, I just purchased the exact same box at HD, I stuck them in all around the house and 2-3 near my potted figs, not in them. I need to take a good look but I can remember seeing a whole bunch of those little ants inside a few potted trees, I haven't noticed them as much while watering since then.

Oh and I wanted to mention something I thought is funny, I see a lot of people recommending broccoli or whatever to catch ground hogs. In the past 4 months, if that, I've captured at least 10-12 of them, I only used bait (cantaloupe rinds) ONCE for the rest nothing! I dont know if the first one left a scent behind or what but for the following 9-11 catches I used NO BAIT.....LOL!

Funny Rafed, I actually also have a ground hog problem and took out my anger on that lil guy using my Gamo this monring. I've trapped and relocated nearly a dozen in two months, I got fed up with it and took this one out. I never realized how many I had living on my property close to my home they're tunneling everywhere and having an a/g pool nearby, I'm not having it any longer.

So I came home yesterday to a pleasant surprise, I had about 4 potted fig trees that had several nearly ripe figs. Yes!

Mind you, some of which I've never had the pleasure of sampling. So my search begins on all 40+ pots for any ready for picking, during my search I found one on the ground half eaten and another still hanging and half eaten. I managed to pick about a half dozen, 3 Sal's and the other 3 unknown cuz my label disappeared. All six were of decent size probably due to all the rain we've had this week. Two other ones were just barely opened up by some unknown critter so I took them down also. Due to a huge dark cloud followed by thunder storms during my search I had to stop and couldnt practice some of unripen fig saving techniques observed on the forum here so I had to wait til this morning. Mind you, I was wondering half the night on what's eating MY figs.

This morning I look out my kitchen window and I see a freaking chipmunk climbing up one of my potted trees. Gotcha!

So now Im thinking it's war time against all those little fig eating chipmunks, only to find 20 min later a grey bird in another potted fig that I KNEW had two almost ready figs cuz I moved it closer to the house before the storm, so I go out to scare it away and low and behold the two figs that were probably a day away from being perfect were 1/4-1/2 eaten.

I NEED to go by some netting today. But have to ask, do any of you know if chipmunks even eat figs? Cuz at this point, I'm 99% certain all along it's been that damned grey bird. The lil bastard doesn't even eat the entire thing, just pecks here n there.

If that wasn't enough, I had two LSU figs that probably needed 2-3 more days, both ripped open, ruined, not even close to being ripe. I've never eaten a LSU I was so looking forward to sampling them.

I'm so po'ed right now I cant even tell ya.

I had a same problem with one of my in ground bushes, except I had about 6 shoots coming up. This yr would have been 5yrs with ZERO fruit production, well last fall I decided to try something drastic...... I cut 3 of the shoots off, made a bunch of cuttings from the rest. To my surprise, this exact bush produced my very first breba crop EVER and it's currently loaded up pretty good with main crop. The only thing I can come up with is for whatever reason, the root ball size must have been too little for 6 shoots, with three gone it's cranking a decent crop for it's size (4feet).

May be something worth trying?!?!

OG- If I were you, I'd definitely give that site above a very close look and then start acquiring as many 5gal buckets as you can get your hands on for free and start drilling. I'd bet you'd cut your watering down to once/day max if not possibly every other day.

I'd also start your planning phase for winterizing, don't wait til the last minute.

Mildly off topic but I think it's in line with this thread.

Is there anything that can be done to reduce early fruit dropping?

I noticed that some of my potted figs have figs that turn color and appear prun'ish (wrinkly) then fall off before getting up to size and ripening....any cause to this?


I second the pinching technique but would like to learn more about the best timeline to plucking the fig embryo's off, I feel like, at this point, I might be limiting the crop by doing that???
Is there a rule of thumb in the NNJ area on a time frame where it's a known that the embryo's wont make it to maturity so it is safe to peel them off?
Possibly late August I'm thinking?

2) is it worth the effort to create some shade?


As I stated earlier, this tree was one season away from being eliminated due to no fruit bearing. I, originally, had it growing as a bush with a bunch of shoots then decided to hack down to 3 primary shoots last fall and would ya know that must have given it life again, it now has a bunch of fruit on it for such a small tree/bush and would like to see those figs mature.

I need some advice, I'm finally getting some fig growth on a tree that NEVER produced a ripe fig (5yrs) this season and noticed I have some leaves curling at first and now yellowing, just today I saw about 3 leaves have fallen. I'm concerned and not sure if I'm under or over watering???  Will the figs be next?

Just an fyi, I typically give this tree anywhere from 2.5-5 gallons daily.





My first tree to produce several breba figs, baffling this tree....going from nothing to two crops. :D

Joe, how much water would you say you give them daily?

This is a question I've had for awhile and always forget to post. Most of my potted figs are in 1-20 gallon pots, I'd say I give approximately a half gallon for 1gal  and 2gallons for the 20gallon pots, daily. My three in-ground trees get approximately 5gals per daily.

Am I over or under watering folks?

Well, I just picked my very first breba fig today, ever!

It's one of three fig trees I received from my late Uncle, none have their official name so I named each after him, a white, a dark and an unknown til this past week. Let me explain......:)

He gave me these trees approximately 4-5 yrs ago, the unknown had NEVER made any fruit til last season and it never ripened. So I got disgusted with it and decided it was going, well, last fall after I started hacking it up I decided to leave 3 shoots and use all the others as cuttings 'just for experimentation's sake'. I have no clue what snipping 3 shoots off did to this thing but I noticed a lil over a month ago the thing was the very first to show some figlets out of all my other trees. Besides the 4 larger figs, it also has a bunch of much smaller figs that I have to presume are the main crop. This morning to my surprise one of them felt very soft to the touch but it wasn't quite drooping as much as I like to see them but feared a bird or some other animal might spoil my party so I picked her and brought her in. I'm going to give her a day on the kitchen window sill before I dissect for photo and devour her as my first breba trophy. :)

This is probably one of the larger variety's I own so I'm hoping it's a tasty one!

The moral of the story is don't be so quick to quit on one of your trees before doing something dramatic. I'm going to have to assume the root structure wasn't large enough for the amount of shoots I had (about 6 since I was planning on keeping it bush like). The thing flourished since the hacking AND at least two of my cuttings have flourished as well.

Robins can be downright crazy at times.

A few yrs back, I had one that would perch up on the railing on my MBR balcony and just fly itself into the patio door then perch back onto the railing repeatedly it seemed until we got out of bed. I wasn't that upset about it until it got earlier and earlier as the days went by. No nest, no nothing, what in Gods earth did that thing want from us? :D

I'm actually having a decent season with all my established potted fig trees, they all seem to have figlets, even the smaller pots. I can't wait to sample all the different varieties!
