@Tony, isn't it possible to tell the scammers by their eBay ratings or do some of them have accounts with no negative reviews?

Subject: When Do Figs Become Ever-Hardy in Zone 6 Replies: 56
Posted By: Beyondista Views: 772

I planted Conadria, Hardy Chicago, Green Ischia, an Unknown, Desert King in ground in a unheated hoophouse in zone 4b Wisconsin.  The site has gotten -25F numerous times.  All 8 figs die back to the ground every year but grow back from the roots.  Growth on a couple was more than 9 feet  in the course of one WI growing season (May - Oct).  So far the only variety that has ripened figs is Desert King but the last 2 years the figs in the greenhouse have not been prepped for winter.

traits would be strong kiwi flavor, good sized fruit, more prolific bearer than the other argutas I have (they have Meader as a pollenizer, the others have one of the numbered males).

hardwood rooting kiwis would be best with mist propagation.  I root mine inside zip locks and use the extra strong rooting hormone.  I get 30 - 50% depending on the thickness of the cutting, the less pith the better rooting.   USDA only sends out hardwood cutting of hardy kiwis, greenwood are far too fragile to ship.

The variety I like the best is one that I've named Kickapoo.  I bought it from a nursery more than 20 years ago and both the sex and the species were mislabeled so I named it myself..

The descriptor I use for Oregon Honey is:

"Very sweet and flavorful greenish/yellow skinned fig with red flesh. May be the same as Peter's Honey Fig a variety brought to Portland, OR from Sicily."

I tend to like the actinidia arguta more since they are far more productive.  They are also way more vigorous, require more attention to pruning, and for me the male argutas are just barely hardiness for zone 4b WI.   kolomikta varieties are hardy to -40F and thrive in partial to full shade...

I still have a few fig cuttings left as well as currants, elderberries, hardy kiwi, grapes and willow as well as tubers like groundnut and sunchokes.  Will consider limited trades for short season ripening figs that I don't already have in my collection.

First year ripening Stella for me.  The main crop fruits are the largest of my collection, weighing in at 1/4 lb a piece, too heavy really for my container trees, tho no branches have broken so far.  The lobes are not nearly so pronounced on the leaves of my tree.

That's crazy, I have 3 VdB, and they never ripen until October and I never ripen that many on a tree.  More than 2 months later than LSU Celeste Improved.

Conadria has the best flavor, even ripening, vigorous set and even tho I only ripen a little over half the crop hanging in the 6 or 7 conadrias I have they size up really nicely.

Most all the varieties have already budded out in the basement,  so that adds a few weeks.  So really most of them leaf out the following week when they are outside.  But of the 50 plus varieties in my trial 12 varieties ripen figs and few of those are not every year.

I have about a 100 figs in 5 gallon pickle buckets.  They're all dormant right now in one of our basements.  I bring them out of the basement second week of May and leave them outside until the temps get down to the high 20s around the end of October.

LSU Celeste ripens 10-15 days earlier than any other of the 50 varieties I grow.  So for people in northern WI + MN it is a perfect choice for a fig that will ripen outdoors in the summer.  It is not my favorite tasting fig, but even for me, it is the only cultivar that the trees ripen every single fruit set.

Actually, LSU Celeste is the fastest most dependable ripening fig for growing in containers in zone 4.  They are the ones I recommend to folks in Wisconsin and Minnesota to grow.  So I usually root them and grow them out and then sell the plants at local Farmer's Market as well as giving a lot of them away as gifts.  That said, I have no problem paying for them, which I said in my setup.  I couldn't read your tone whether you were being snarky or instructive.

Strawberry Verte is along with Conadria the easiest to root as well.  I had about 10-15 one node cuttings, all of them smaller than one inch, and they all rooted quickly.  I just threw all the pieces, smaller than matchsticks into a bag of peat and ignored them for weeks.  They're all potted up now.

As a container plant in Wisconsin, it is the first to ripen fruit and is really the only variety I have that ripens all of its fruit before the onset of freeze.  I've been selling a lot of figs to people locally, so it's the variety I get the beginners to start with.

Subject: When do you allow newly grown cuttings to go dormant? Replies: 12
Posted By: Beyondista Views: 429

I bring a lot of my first year figs in the house and grow them thru the winter.  Partly because my dormant space stays around freezing and sometimes the young figs get a lotta dieback and also because by growing them thru the winter I gain a lot of root growth. Oftentime I cut the majority of the top growth back in the spring before they go outside for their second year.  I'm in Wisconsin with a fairly short growing season so for me there's a lot to be gained.

I just started selling cuttings on ebay as SACREDGROVEORGANICS and sold well over 500 cuttings.  Considering I had no other source of income the money was a real blessing.  Most of my trees are from fairly reputable sources such as nurseries and the repository but I would never sell something that I didn't know what it was and where it came from.  I had to laugh at myself tho because for the last 20 years I'd been just throwing the majority of my fall prunings on the ground and lettings them dry up.  I'm just about to graduate to selling some young plants that I have extras of, trying to get up to speed with the best ways to pack and the most economical ways to ship.

The varieties that actually ripen figs here I typically pay a lot more attention to root pruning and keeping them actively growing.  A few varieties like Green Ischia which'll never ripen here are extremely rootbound but the trees keep plugging away nonetheless.

In the ideal world they would get root pruned every couple years but I would have to clone myself or pay someone to do it.  Also since I mostly use 5 gallon pickle buckets which I can get for free, which are not tapered, getting them out of the bucket usually destroys the buckets and is fairly time consuming.

There's a few photos of our forest garden at http://facebook.com/driftlessgrove.

He gets paid handsomely. And it's actually more strenuous than I've described so far since the basement entrance is a mud slope down into the basement and the basement door is very low.  All the big figs have to come thru the door sideways, and it takes both of us to do it. By no means ideal, but if nothing else, is the measure of the passion I feel for growing figs.  I usually just take a bunch of ibuprofin before I do the twice yearly move and figure the following day is a rest day.
