I am currently growing all three in ground and so far the most productive is the Blanc (UCD).The most vigorous grower is the Gris. I agree with Blue that the Blanc (UCD) is currently my preferred of all three and perhaps of my entire collection. There's another version of Blanc (Baud) that I'm finding to be hard to get to produce in pots. My observation far is that this variety (any Color) needs several years before you get good results and needs lots of heat in order to ripen its fruit. It's a late variety.

Perfect explanation!

By the way, I am the "touchy french man"

They look shewed; most probably a rat; last year these god d*$^ù§ rats ate the bark of a few of my littles trees!  I had to cut them down to the ground. Use rats traps as soon as possible and wait for the catch.
If the end of the branch grew soft and it broke in your fingers as it if it were rotten ;only one cause :too much watering. When they start their dormancy and in the spring when they grow slowly , overwatering is the main cause of failure.

Hello,

I am from France and I am growing Hava. This fig from Egypt is also called "Fayumi"; the oddity is that the leaves don't have any lobes; except that, the fruits are not fabulous, not very sweet and they need the wasp for the second crop. I got it last year because it's a curiosity and it's the only one I have from Egypt. I'll wait another year to see if the fruits get any better; if they don't I will not keep the tree. I talked about it with Pierre Baud last month and he agreed with me about the average taste of the fruit.
Actually I tried a few last summer and finally let the birds have them  . . . .

Here is a picture of the leaves and some brebas in formation.

According to my own experience Pierre Baud is the most serious and accurate fig expert in France. I have tried other "specialized nurseries" and they were big disapointment. And he is a very nice man .I dont know the brusset nursery.
You say that English people have little knowledge when it comes to fig trees, well it's the same here, and I live in the south of France which is fig heaven, they grow everywhere but people know only black and green figs and that's about it!
Of course you can order from that disponible list; and even ask him for rareties. In your wish list, I have not tried the 2 LSU, violette de B must be negronne which is a very good one, Ischia black is very very similar to negronne, Preto means black in potuguese so I guess you mean Sao Joao Preto (pierre Baud had one prepared for me so I guess you can ask him one for next year), I got one black madeira also and I think he might have one left,I don't know Atreano but I got from him, Adreano (the same?) and I don't know the two reds.
The two problems when you live in the "north" are the short summers and the fact that you don't have the fig wasp so you must avoid san pedro types and late ripening trees. But you can have fun with the brebas of dauphine, Macca, colar, breba, nazareth etc . . .And you must avoid Shenshare, Hava, Shamé, etc. . .
Mary Lane is very nice, Portugal 80 is a dwarf tree as Alma although it's late in the season. If you don't have Dalmatie, get it it's a must have for cool weather , try also Tena, and longue d'aout.
You can also check Adriano's site, that way you'll know which ones work fine in pots : http://www.adrianosfigtrees.com/varieties.html
Well I guess it's about it.

Hello again

Sorry late answer; I was actually planting two fig trees ( panachée and Chettoui)
Sucre vert is a  pretty  big fruit much bigger than sucrette and late in the season (around the 15th of august here, well this year the fig season started on the 20th of july). Pierre Baud says that sucre vert is almost too sweet; I think it's delicious but not as tasty as Trojano for exemple (you should try this one) . I quickly looked  at the Reads site and they are wrong on Pastilliere which has 3 lobes thick velvety leaves, ronde de Bordeaux doesn't look like the picture, and dorée has different leaves. (i can show pic if you want).
By the way if you are in England you should try the "blanche" from Baud, which is very cold resistant and  has delicious fruits probably as good as St. Jean for the brebas. You can even plant it in your garden.
You'll find Trojano and blanche on the Baud disponible: http://www.fig-baud.com/notredisponible.html

Hello from France.

It Seems you guys are having problems with sucrette and sucre vert. I have them both and they come from the Baud nursery.
Sucrette (translation: "sugarette"):
On pictures 2 an 3 the smaller one is sucrette (the bigger one is Cavaliere)

Feuilles sucrette.jpg Cavaliere et sucrette.jpg  Cavaliere et sucrette 1.jpg

Then Sucre vert (green sugar) also called Mussega:

feuilles sucre vert 2.jpg  Sucre vert 6.jpg  Sucre vert 7.jpg

I was surprised to read this post because I saw pierre Baud 2 days ago and we talked about this. He has the original Sucre vert and Sucrette, both are coming from " Conservatoire botanique national méditerranéen
de Porquerolles
and are really delicious figs. But here, many generalist nurseries are selling sucre vert and sucrette but they are not the real ones like, it seams,  the Reads nursery . Compare the leaves of Sucre vert from Baud and from Reads. . . . .
Reads sucrette seams OK although their fig is a little bit longer than mine.
Well I hope this will help .
