@BLB. I think you will really like those Scott's Black. I  got two figs from one potted up this spring (more are forming) and they were at least as good as any from VdB or Black Jack. And those were the best I have ever eaten.

Belated Thanks Pete.
Sounds like my VdB. The two figs I got this first year were very good. I would just like to find one with better looking leaves.
I saw one pictured over on GW but I never found where it was from.

Just another thought on nematodes/compost/figs.
Some compost like 'mushroom compost' are alkaline as opposed to the normal acid compost, that needs limestone added (for figs).
Does the alkaline mushroom compost discourage nematodes because they don't like alkaline soil or does it just make the fig roots and plant happier and stronger and able to fight off the nematodes ?.
Are LSU Purple really nematode resistant , OR are they HEAT resistant (they seem to be) and therefore stronger and again, able to withstand nematode attacks ?
I picked up the bottem bag of pine bark mulch that had been stacked under a shade tree. I noted that roots had grown from the ground up into the pine bark. Could nematodes now have entered the pine bark and into my potting mix along with the roots?
Short of sterile lab conditions I think it's difficult to come to real answers as to how the todes get into our plants.
But I'm thankfull for all the ideas, as they all make us think.
Best to all.
Dave.

Thanks for the tip on the compost Frank.

I agree . Compost and rich soil are recommended for nematode problems. I think that is one of the problems in our sandy soil, there is no organic material. Plus the soil in many areas were worn out by farming/pesticides/herbicides et al.
It may look like virgin forest, but 50 or so years it was all farm land.
Thanks again
Dave.

I find I have nematodes on two of my oldest trees.
I planted my Jelly Fig and Green Ishia along with 3-4 other cultivars about 10 years ago.
I ignored JF&E's advice to enrich a large planting hole with at least one half mixture of pine bark or other mulch along with mushroom compost and cow manure along with half of the original soil (sand). First year lost all except the Jelly and GI. May have been the todes or my watering.
It is hard to describe how fast this North Fla sand dries out and actually repells water once dry. I think it would be hard to overwater in the summer in pure sand here.
The GI and Jelly survived, grew huge and after a couple of years produced big crops of figs. Coulda been the rabbit manure.
Then two years ago theystarted to weaken and decline.
So.... I don't know if the weakning of the trees gave the todes a foot hold, or the nematodes finally took over.
My later plantings were done with a big hole filled with pine bark, mushroom compost/cow manure, dolimitic limestone and soil, with a heavy mulch covering it all.  So far so good. Fingers crossed.
Still trying to save the two big trees with heavy mulch and compost and TLC.
I want to try grafting onto some LSU Purple rootstock and have started several airlayers.
If all else fails I'll just airlayer the trees and go to large pots.
FWIW the ivermectrin (for livestock)MUCH Diluted, really does kill worms including heartworms in dogs.
Wouldn't be hard to try some diluted on a potted plant that has nematodes to see if it really works.
I would advise great caution before eating figs from the treated tree though.
My best
Dave.

I also have "LSU Purple" figs from two nurseries.
The trees from Just Fruits, seem to fit the description of
LSU Purple given by LSU themselves.
Punch up' lsuagcenter LSU Purple fig'.
See fig4. The leaf looks a lot like the JF&E trees.
No ripe figs so far for comparison.

FMD you're right.
Not too many years ago I was an avid runner,5'10'155lbs. little bodyfat, High Cholesteral. Doctor said I had picked the wrong grandparants.
All that being said, high Cholesterol in a lean athletic frame is better than in a fat lazy frame(mine at present). LOL.

I got one from JF&E this spring. Also no FMV. Still in pot has made several figs ,all split before really maturing. We've experianced a sudden onset of rain.
The largest figs on the Monstreause so far aren't as big as the LSU Tiger or Miss Hall.
I've heard it described as a good fig with an "unfortunate name".
I'm going to set up some air layers.

This year with Celeste and Tiger I left them on till they hung straight down ,dead soft,  outer skin split, color ran up through the neck.
When the Tiger made it all the way plus a drop of sugar syrup at the eye, they were chewy near the eye, like sweet gumdrop. But only 3 or 4 made it this far.
It is allways a waiting/gamble with the rain, splitting, and the animals.
Luck

I'm going to throw this out, though I've not tried it yet.
Heard a lady online say she was losing prize koi and goldfish every night to a coon. She said she set a small radio (I assume in rainproof shelter or bag)  by the pond on a timer that came on every night to all night talk radio.
She said she never lost another fish to the coons. She thought they were wary of the human voices all night.
Sounds reasonable and cheap.
I just don't have a small radio or electricity near my figs.
If someone tries it ,let us know how it works at night.

FMD checked the PMs. Thanks will do.
I feared it was Brunswick, but thought is was possible Vista Black Mission or one like on Jon's site. It was 10 Bucks. It was so dry I didn't expect it to live. Lowes will take dead ones back with refund so I figgured I would rescue it.
Fig plants must be a lot tougher than we usually think. It was dry as dust the plant and pot were weightless. I Potted it up and it has been growing ever since. No fruit yet though. Thanks Again.

20 or so years ago (before figs) we had a red mini-daschound.We had a fenced in back yard in a subdivision. He hated all birds and squirrels (they would steal food from his bowl on the patio while he watched through the glass door) He mostly lived inside but he was a terror to all pest when outside Might be worth training one up and leaving him out 24/7. I'm sure any of the Russels or feist would do as well.
I live out in the sticks, so a scoped, $avage MK2,bolt action .22LR works pretty fair for the SQs.

Could be he was trying to make a rub with your fig tree.
We have a lot of whitetail deer here but they have enough woods they don't have to bother us too much.
I hear the dogs barking at night sometime so they probably scare the deer away.
Something was digging around my Celeste and figs were dissapearing but I think it was a possum or coon. No deer tracks.

Hope my fig trees don't see the beautiful well kept bed your tree has. They'll all be wanting one.
Looks like you're doing a great job. Though I really know nothing about your climate .
I was advised I could leave a few figs on a new tree but to pinch them off near the terminal growth, so the tree could go on getting bigger.(If that's what you're aiming for)

Sounds like the "commisioners" wanted to remove the trees and commissioned a study to come out the way they wanted it.
In Tallahassee there is usually someone wanting to cut down the ancient oaks lining the beautiful, shady, canopy roadways.
Seems the trees cause accidents,WHEN folks drive twice the 35MPH speed limit DUI at night.
Cut the Trees,  That way we can drive twice a new posted 45MPH speed limit safely at night while DUI.

Those wires look like insulated service wires to the home (neutral and 120v) all you have to worry about is NOT pulling them down.  Touching them with the tree limbs is ok.
You can still contact the power co. though if you're worried.

Jpm1.
I have to admit I have never dug up and moved a large fig tree.
The trees I've dug up in the woods and brought home were idealy done in stages. Trying to build and preserve as much roots in as little space as possible.
Dig a third of the way around the root ball you are keeping , another third this fall then finnish the digging and transplant next spring.
I have, on  a have to basis done it all in one day. Sometimes it worked but mostly didn't. Talking about wild trees here not planted fruit trees. But the general strategy is the same.
I moved a 20+ft Japanese Maple from town to my place using a 1/2 day rented UHaul. I've used open trailors ,at night after soaking the foliage. Expect leaf loss.
If you have unlimited time make an air layer of the top half  then move it this fall and the bottem in the spring or whenever suits you.
If it's a rare or very disireable tree be sure to save the cuttings.((;
Just some ideas.
Good Luck

Let me add my encouragement Dan. The more we can find about figs that were  tailor made for our hot/humid Gulf Coast the better of we all are.
FWIW your figs pictured look a lot like my "Celestial" fig. Didn't split or sour during all this rain like my LSU Tiger did. This was it's first year in the ground and the taste was bland to sweet.Nothing EarthShaking like my one dried on the tree BlackJack was last year.
Keep up the good work.

Hey Celt.
We allready have "stink" bugs. Haven't seen any of the Marmorated ones from up North yet. Thankfully.
I've noticed on several of my fig trees the big 'Wheel'Assassin bugs sitting in the shade between leaves waiting. UUUgly.
Saw one eating a brown stinkbug and another one eating a little wasp?.
I've heard tufted titmice will eat stinkbugs.
Online I saw a couple of simple DIY stinkbug traps.Might be worth trying.
We keep a lot of water and food for the birds maybe they will eat more bugs than figs.LOL.
Saw a herd of SBs on a red pepper plant so I guess they like scicey food. Sprayed them with safer soap.
Hopefully we can find a  way to limit the damage SBs do w/o killing every animal in the garden.

If there are no babies in the nest I would move it, they will just build another. If there are babies I'd put up with it a couple of weeks til they're gone, then move it.
Robins don't nest here. Mockingbirds are the agressive ones.
I don't have a lot of bird damage here (knock wood). We have several feeders with black sunflower seed and peanutbutter suet and lots of water. Our birds are to lazy and spoiled to bother with figs.
Grey Squirrels  are another story.

Noss "Kids Huh"
Indeed.  I grew up in NE Texas eating big Brn/Purple figs off of Grand Pa's fig tree. Don't know what kind it was . I remember the fist figs of the summer weren't good and I would wait a while (month?) then they were great.
It would freeze down to the ground  Every winter w/o fail, and then put out about a hundred spring suckers about 10ft tall and bear a heavy crop every year.
Ma canned figs every year tho I tried to eat all the fresh ones.
Went back a few years ago after 50 years. The house was being lived in but the old fig tree was gone.
