Thanks Nick, yes the hedges serve as a repository for the extras. They are three for good. I harvest figs, cuttings and air layers from them.

As for the the SUV incident... Never let a student driver use your fig orchard to practice parallel parking. LOL.

John, I understand and appreciate your perspective. I believe that one can be a great contributor to the fig community and at the same time buy and sell fig material at ridiculously high prices. Our mutual friend Rafed is a great example of that. In any field, you will find a full spectrum of views and endeavors. The only bad guys in all of this are the intentional scammers we've seen on eBay.

By the way, I have Rafed's Genovese Nero and Ponte Tresa cuttings in a $7 lotto on the other fig forum as we speak. The tickets are selling fast.

Try as I might, I just don't get it. Why the anger? And to whom is it specifically directed? Who are the bad guys in this soap opera?

Igor, Rob IM'ed me the errors and I've edited the blog. Thanks.

The inside was not as red as from the mother tree, nor the green. I gave a few possibilities for that on the blog.

My Atreano died down to the ground las winter for the first time ever, so now I am enjoying some late figs. No splitting so far.

It might be a Col. Littman Black Cross coming from Just Fruits. Not a bad fig at all, but not a BM either.

Joe, I am going to thank you once again for introducing the San Donato Di Ninea fig to me via Joe G. and in turn to dozens of others. It is a world-class fig from Calabria. I hope your tree is still producing excellent fruit for you.

Great to hear so many great success stories!

I did a trial recently comparing coir with a modified version of Harvey's method using 16 similar cuttings of the same fig variety. The coir method won hands down, in quality, quantity and timing. Despite these wonderful successes, there are some who have reported disastrous failures. I am not sure why since coir is so forgiving when it comes to moisture problems.

Oh, Oh...I think I may have been an unwitting participant in this fig conspiracy.

When I offered cuttings at a reasonable cost recently, I had one particular order for over 100 pieces. It came from an individual with a Russian sounding name and a Brooklyn address.

But if the end game is to sell them on eBay as rare cultivars, why not simply raid a local fig tree and label the cuttings accordingly?

I don't think there should be problems with the high humidity, Travis.
Coir will not contribute to mold unless the cuttings were old and decomposing to start with. If you are worried that there is too much water left in the coir, you can always leave the lid off the bin for a few days. However, one of the big advantages to coir is how forgiving it is regarding the range of moisture it can tolerate.
If the cuttings are relatively fresh, you should have great results.

Hi Joe.
My best advice is to turn and walk away from the fig "hobby" as fast as you are able before it is too late. The addictiveness of growing figs rivals that of crack, so unless you are ready to say goodbye to your garage, extra bedroom and all of your free yard and driveway space, walk away immediately.

If you don't believe me, read this first.

If that doesn't scare you off, then welcome aboard! :))

Dennis, no worries. JD bequeathed a large Smith to me over the summer, so I'm good. I was just wondering if the CaBT produced yet. Mine is about 5 feet tall but no fruit yet. Can't wait.

Dale, let me know if there is something specific you were looking for from the list. It is never too late, although if I have to look at one more cutting today, I think I'll throw up.

Hi guys and gals. That's a nice response!
Please bear with me while i go through all the emails. It's nasty out there, weather-wise and I have a job, but I should be able to get them out over this coming week-end.
Tomorrow morning, depending on how many more emails i receive, I may put a temporary pause on the offer until I catch up.

James, my avatar is a picture of the best tasting, best looking fig my palate and my eyes had the pleasure of meeting, Ponte Tresa. No cuttings yet, unfortunately.

I can see that I am going to be swamped! Less than an hour into the offer and lots of requests. Good.

Please communicate through the email address provided. Send me an itemized list of what you want. I will get back to you with availability and further details.
Please be patient. The $6 cuttings are almost gone.
I will try and make the cuttings at least 6 inches long with at least 3 nodes.

(James, it is an honor to be on your wife's hit list...hopefully she will not sick the FDLE on me. :)))

I am going to do a trial run of offering some cuttings for what I think is a reasonable cost for about a week. If things go well, I will extend the time..
Most are not cutting edge varieties but for some of the newbies it might be a cost effective means of stocking up on some standard fig types.
Please do a forum search for the varieties that are not familiar to you before asking about them as this would cut down on repetition.

Details here.

Update:
Done.
Thanks everyone.

Welcome, Florida.
There is huge amount of information on this forum that answers most of you questions. There are some excellent fig growers in FL who have overcome many of the problems you allude to. Invest some time and do a detailed search. WillsC from the Inveness area is currently growing 180+ fig varieties on his property...and he just only started a few years ago. He would be a great source for you.
