I have tried the bag method before. Mine have rotted on me every time. So gave up. Maybe if I could find a you tube might understand it better.

I know the figs don't like the cold even the miss named "Chicago Hardy". Turned out not to be that Hardy in Zone 5. I didn't know I would miss the cold until I moved to LA. Don't miss moving 5 gallon buckets with Figs trees to over winter in buildings.

I must say hasn't gotten cold for me in LA yet. Been here this time a year. It isn't cold till it hits 0 degrees out below. I miss the snow? I keep saying we need a good 2 ft. Snow like we would see in Chicagoland.

I would agree with Danny. I would be concerned what kind of change that would be introduced to the eco system balance.

I see that. I wasn't really trying to play Christmas with them or checking to see if Santa came yet. I looked a saw roots coming to the surface! I just couldn't believe how fast they rooted compared to the other method.

I have been online, particularly YouTube, looking at rooting methodology for cuttings. Two that peaked my interest were the three cup method, championed by Dave on the forum consisting a planting in a clear cup with drain holes. A clear cup tapped on top pressed into service as a humity dome creating a mini, macro humity chamber. Then that system is placed in a colored cup to serve as a sunblock for roots that would develop.
The second system, seen on YouTube, is a simple pan i.e. Lasuania pan with a cover. You would layer a pea / pearlite mix, I believe a ratio near 80% pearl to 20% peat. You would put a layer of that concoction and then lay the cuttings down horizontally. Then another layer of the peat / pearl. Moisten it down ever so slightly put a top on it and as Ron Poppell would say "set it and forget."

I set some cuttings I received about a week ago to see which would root first. To my surprise. The pan method produced roots where as the tree cup method hasn't. So I put the ones in the pan in cups today so they will finish out and start leafing out. The cups I am still watching. Now I will add the slight possibility that there are roots in the cup method. I didn't take any cuttings out to test the hypothesis.
In the pan I had one cutting that developed roots on every node. Don't know how you deal with that. I planted the whole thing hoping a new stem will push its way up by Spring.

This is brought to you for your educational consideration and of course comments. Will try and post some pictures when I get to my MacBook Pro. Hard to post from the iPad.

I have a pepper I grow that goes by various names - nuke bomb, rat sh*t, bird seed. I got the seeds while I was in the USAF in Thailand. A small pepper. I think I remember the FL pepper. Went looked @ the eBay listing. Would be interested but wouldn't want 100 seeds.

Ye, it is a hormone like clones. I dip for about 10 seconds. I let it dry a little before I pit the cuttings in the cloner. The ones I dip produce roots faster than those I don't dip.

I use a Clone King cloner. I dip them in dip and grow. Mine usually show roots in 2 weeks.

Ross.
I am not familiar with the Smith or Preto. Tell me a little more about the. Th interest in the JH and the SAV because I heard they had a slight strawberry flavor. I move to this zone last year from Zone 5. There, 60 miles south of y always froze to the ground. I think I might have gotten two Figs from a Chicago Hardy. I had the CH because I thought it would be true to its name and be Hardy in Chicago. Misnomer they need to change its name false advertising. I think the LSU Purple I can get locally from a fellow in Wascom that is on the forum. Just have to find time to go see him.

I think people can become over enthusiastic when becoming involved in new ventures. We have to learn patience with our involvement. Can waste a lot of time and money as the video points out. I have done that in other ventures which has lead me to become skeptical thus move slower with new areas I become involved. I think time and maturity teaches a lot of lessons.

A question what is your assessment of taste of Strawberry Verte an Adriatic JH. I want to try and keep mine down to about 8 different kinds. Right now I have a LSU Gold in ground, LSU Hollier rooting, EBT rooting, Ronde De B, MBVS rooting. So thinking Adriatic JH and Strawberry Verte might round me out unless there is some other must have out there. Any ideas appreciated.

I thought this was interesting. This is supposedly a fig that came from the Jordan area where Moses struck the Rock in the Book of Numbers instead of spoke to it. Numbers 20. I wonder what kind of fig it would be? I wonder when someone is going to come up with the fig that Adam and Eve used for clothing? Sounds like a scam to me what do you think?

I might have had a mislabeled Chicago Hardy when I lived in Illinois. I got a couple figs I didn't find a taste that jumped off the page @ me. I wonder myself if there is more than one variety. Would love to try one of the good tasting ones. Hope to get a cutting of HC and the Marseilles. I hear so many good things about that one. I have a LSU Gold in the ground now.

When I lived in zone 5. Chicago Hardy never lived up to its name for me. We had a, mild for Chicagoland, winter on year it made I through. After that it would die all th way to the ground. I have yet to understand why it is called HC when it will not do good there? I know live in zone 8 would love to try on here.

Here are some roots from cuttings that have been in my Clone King cloner. I have taken the one with long roots and put them in clear cups to root better over the winter. Now, do I need to put them, in dark over winter, some kind of plastic container to develop some type of humity dome? Interested in what u guys think? I have buried my bucket with bottom cut out full of a peat / perlite mix. I plan on rooting more cuttings in it if I can get some varieties to try, plus I will root some Concord and Thompson white seedless grapes as well. In zone 5 I started them in November and removed them May 1st. Now I don't know when I need to put them in the bucket in my zone here in North West LA 3/4 mile from Southern Arkansas. Any ideas on that? Also anyone root Blueberries. I find them very difficult to root. I guess the photos didn't make it. Let me go into photobucket and try again. I guess I'm in Zone 8.

Dave I was living 60 miles south of Chicago. Which I guess was too far north for Hardy Chicago. I had bogught at Lowes. Would grow like crazy in Summer. Then winter would kill it all the way to the ground. I guess t didn't like -30 temps.

Lived in zone 5 for a few years n veer could get a Chicago Hardy to live through the winter. So for me didn't live up to the name. You would think a fig called Chicago should live through the weather in Chicago.

You r so right some time u have to let things go for your own health. It is still tough! I have heard next to death of a loved one divorce is the next highest stress cause. Add eviction on top of that wow! Anything we can do for you let us know. I use to have a friend that preached in Buford. So might be someone you could get with and vent, that always helps.

Good luck to u and glad u are able to rebuild.

I bought a Hydroponic cloner unit. I put some cuttings in there last Sunday. The most of them already have either white bumps or very small roots. Now question. Should I leave them in the cloner and see if they develop better roots or pull them at this point and pot them up in clear cups to watch root development? Lately I have seen some Figs here would love to try and root. The LSU Red, Purple, Stawberry Verte, and Adriatic JH. Only problem would be having the room here for all of them. Thanks to Danny K over in Wascom for his help.
