This should keep the top layer moist even if you forgot to water promptly. Also, I would recommend a small moat just outside the bucket to keep the water from running too far

btw, I have been meaning to write you to thank you for the excellent Khurtmani cuttings. It's hard to believe that in only 12 weeks, one of them is over 3 feet tall and carrying a bunch of figs on it. The second cutting was also quite successful but smaller (the hole I dug was a smaller for the smaller tree). This amazing tree is a testimony to t   he source (you know what I mean). Attached are pictures of both trees. As you can see, I have wood chips around both to avoid drying out in case I forget to water them, although they get a personal visit from me daily :)
I cant wait till the figs mature

Hi simon,
Amazing pictures for the Khortmani  :)
it shows how much you really care about it. thanks for the good advises, I have mulched the tree and placed a shadow net over it m now i am waiting for signs of recovering.
what I noticed about figs is that each tree has its own developing pace, some are growing slow and weak and some are just like a rocket :)
here  below an example for another fig (the same variety + age+ planting date ) tree that is identical with the first that I have posted above, but this one is doing very good, all the conditions around are the same for two , notice the big difference:

Hi elin
The tree is not potted as I stated before , the picture is misleading . the pot has no bottom! it holds the water  pretty good around the trunk.  these tree I got from Bassem from treesOfJoy in an exchange deal before  2 years . surprisingly I have another 2 trees from the same variety planted away from this one and they are doing real good , strong and vigorous . tomorrow I will see if I can show you some pictures of them.

Thanks drew,
A shade cloth would be a great idea, I will install it tomorrow before sunset when it cool dawn so I can work without sweating :)
Pine straw is an excellent idea too, I have plenty of it in the forest next to my house. Ahhrrr our summer here burns every thing up. I think that also older trees tolerate the heat much better than the young ones.

the Fig planted in the ground , the pot has no bottom ! it is for holding as much water close to the stem.

I live in Israel, the temperature outside reached today 102 Fahrenheit.
Drew, you have raised very important questions ! the possibility of having been sprayed by insecticide is possible too, maybe my father have done that accidentally , now I need to ask him about that. but also the possibility of heat burns can be true.
I think am going to continue watering it, also I will wrap it with a shadow net to prevent a large portion of the sun reaching it.
we will see , it hard for me to get an right answer now

I have planted this fig in my home garden the last Autumn in its permanent [lace in the ground(the bucket is butomless), not long time ago it was thriving and growing happily with new buds and leaves. its been a month since we have heat waves here in my land, although I water it very frequently each 3 days but it  seems like something bad is happening to it, I am not sure if this is the cause of excess water or maybe lack of it or it is because of the heat and the sun burns.
maybe someone have a good advise for saving this tree.
 best regards, sami

Hi all,
I really concerned about eBay sellers who steal pictures of others, it happened to me twice and eBay customer service have nothing done about that, my pictures and description were stolen and listings where active parallel to my listings. fraud and scam is a very bad thing and we have all to fight it. over the years I have collected hundreds of beautiful fig pictures but I am very concern each time I upload one to the net. I tried making a water stamp but it was a bit sophisticated and ruined the image it self. sorry for not being so active here on F4F, we have a Missy political situation here in Palestine and I am busy doing other things. I answer all questions from all my customers and try to help my best. also few old members here on F4F know me very will and have them on my facebook too

As to the "air roots" when I get them like that I always plant the whole cutting to take advantage of the "extra" roots.

so, I haven't understand ! is the cuttings upside down? if you burried the whole cutting including the roots, how you will get the buds breaking up above the soil?

Hi Elin,
I am thinking about painting the trees trunk with white latex paint, it should reflect the sun heat very will . I am also worried about the summer sun, it happened the last year that the newly emerging tender leaves were burned. so I am thinking about spraying the whole tree in some kind of white paint or something similar, but I still don't know what material it would be .

I don't think that I understand what you said , how could rocks increase soil evaporation?!
if you mean the moisture evaporation , I think the opposite s true ! rocks known to reflect sun heat.
look at the desert , if you found a tree, there must be a rock beside it where the root of that tree goes under it and collect moisture from its surface.

Yes I have them both, 'Teen' and 'Zytoon'
I am really happy having them  :)
I also keep honeybees ... and have delicious honey from wild flowers of the Holy Land !
I think I'll water them more frequently, i'll cover there soil with small rocks (lime stones), this will help them sure to preserve the moisture in the soil.

recently I have planted 12 fig trees beside my olive trees orchards. some of the trees are 2 years old and others are 1 year. I noticed that there progress and growth is very limited and I don't know the reason why. is that because the olive trees roots compete with them about the water ant nutrition in the soil? or it could be a lack of watering?
figs that I planted near to my home are more vigorous and bigger than those at the Olive orchard.
I thought about using some kind of fertilization to speed up the growth, but I don't know if that is possible because of there young age.
any help/ideas will be appreciated

I do not have any favourite method but always come back to the baggie method for ease of it with changing paramters mostly related to ease of use. The only thing I make sure is that I open the bag every other day to air and check for mold. I easily find out which cuttings seem to be mold prone. Usually I find out that if I got two cuttings of the same type/vintage and one shows mold I son find the other one with similar tendency. What I am getting at is that the history/vitality of cuttings itself also determines if cutting will be prone to mold in the baggie method.
To add to this, I miserably failed to roots cuttings from the south far-east using baggie method due to mold even though I saw it coming when airing. On the other hand I had the best success with baggies method with cuttings from the north-east of the continent (100% from my own plants). Baggie method with some precautions may not be the best but one of the easy and consistent.

Hi Ottawan,
I would like  know about rooting fig cuttings  in "only water" .
I am surprised to hear about this method, i use the baggie method adding a lite breathable soil to the cuttings, i also make a lot of holes in the bag to provide ventilation for the roots.
but what if we just drop the cutting in a clear glass of water and come back two weeks later, will they root?

thank you all for all the important information posted here. I asked also the old people here that learned growing figs from father to sun for generations. The answer was so simple , that is to plant cuttings deep in the soil in early spring , then watering few times during the summer. The succes rate is relatively hight. I'll personally add to that to shade the fig from sun the first year, I do this by placing a large white bucket (bottum cut) over the fig , that will prevent the new emerging leaves from burning in the sun.and it gave me good results.

Here we have an excellent soil that can keep moisture, my goal is to plant the fig tree and let it

hi all,
nice to be here again in this great site.
in the last year i followed the instruction in this site and
have hat planted 14 fig trees.
some of them are doing fine and some others
are weak developed. but the big problem is that 4 trees were eaten by a mole in the ground.

in the coming spring i am planning to plant other 4 trees. i have seen my neighbor
growing figs by just planting the cutting directly into the ground and they were stronger
and taller than my figs that i started them in bags then transferred to pots then finally to the ground.
so i wan't to ask here about planting the fig cuttings directly in the ground, is there precautions that i should take? what about the sunlight ? what if i dig a deep hole and placed the cutting at the bottom, would it better survive and reach the soil moisture easily ?

i would like to thank you for the bag-rooting-method, i found this forum since 4 months and i am very happy to find other  people  who share the same interests like me. I am rooting now about 40 fig cuttings the best varieties that i choosed among  about100 fig trees in my region.
i placed my cuttings behind the freezer , its worm there  but dark! would that effect the root growth? most of the cuttings are putting leaves out instead of roots!
so i'll be patient and wait for another 2-3 weeks waiting for the roots to come out.

Thanks a lot for the precious information that you posted. in my orchard only one fig tree were infected by this beetle, the last month i cut it down leaving tow healthy sprouts near to it. in order to protect the other fig trees that i newly planted the last fall i really need this information to be ready for any attack!
or maybe potting a plate of mango fruits near the stem of the fig will let the beetles come out then it would be easy to catch them  and punish them ... haha :)

Hi friends, hi ejp3, the fig that you asked about named Sbayi, its considered to be one of the most hight quality in Israel, the tree gives a lot of fruit along 3 months, inside has a high sugar level, the eye is closed, the fruit has a big size, cant be damaged bye insects, birds love this tree so they leave all other fig trees and start eating the Sbayi.
