Subject: A Farm visit in South GA Replies: 2

Hey All,
Sorry I dropped out for so long. I've been a busy guy, and my focus has been on other things besides figs.
I just visited Hershell from this forum down is South GA. He's a great guy and if you're ever in the area, see if you can drop by. He has an amazing Orchard. He was a great host and I can't say enough about the wide selection of Citrus, Figs and other fruit he has planted. We tasted lots of stuff while there.
I'm so glad there are forums such as these to meet great folks with similar interests. If you're ever in North GA drop me a P.M. too, I'm happy to show you around my place. Not as much stuff as Hershell but I'm happy to share what I have on hand.

I just returned from a trip and went to check up on my in ground figs and saw hundreds if not thousands of Kudzu beetles massed around all the green shoots and leaves. I really hope my one pest free fruit doesn't have a new pest. These beetles are a new introduction in the south(I'm in GA). I didn't see any obvious damage but I only got in just before dark so I will have to investigate tomorrow. I will try to post pics tomorrow as well. Lets all hope we don't have a new problem to deal with. Anyone else down south seen these beetles on their figs?

This does look like a strong graft indeed. I'll have to give this a try. Is the cambium of your rootstock exposed the entire distance on the left side where your scion is meeting it or just where your notch is?

Yes Indeed, It was great hanging out with you guys. It's great fun to share our experiences growing as well as a few cuttings. I think a few new figheads were born today at the swap too. Not that I was excited or anything : )....but I already have a few twigs in my spare bedroom/rooting room titled  Satellitehead and strudeldog cuttings. Jason don't despair about your planting area, you can plant all the figs you want at my place... as long as I get grazing rights! I once lived in a downtown loft and was limited on space. I had plants in the driveway, the roof, all the windows. I'm lucky I wasn't a fighead then.

Hey Jason,
I noticed in your pics of the cuttings that failed all or most had terminal buds. I've had very poor results with cuttings that had the terminal buds left on. Also, in one of your pot-up photo's I saw a droopy leafed fig that was mostly T bud growth. I'm sure you had many that made it with T buds intact but do you have any idea of your success rate T buds on V/S cut off?

P.S. great thread thanks!!

Many Universities have done some very encouraging research using vermicompost and vermicompost tea in combating nematodes. This one by Ohio State University

Oh Santa Please!!
I'm a newbie and don't have anything but a Home Depot Brown Turkey, and Celeste. I've only tasted the B-turkey and Celeste and love them. If my wish list lives up to descriptions I'll be in Fig Heaven.

Will trade Grape cuttings if you're interested. Scuppernong, Carlos Muscadine, and Concord.

My wish list:

Ronde de Bordeaux
Hardy Chicago
Smith
White Triana
Negronne
Col De Dame White

I love to share and will gladly return the favor once they are established!!

I'm in Zone 7b (Will be growing in Pots)

Thanks, Michael
