Yeah, she has loved figs since she could first eat solid foods. Still the first LSU Gold of the season is always a sweet surprise.

And the second runner up is....LSU Gold!  The first fig i ever owned, and still the best "honey" fig I've tasted.  When it is right, it is hard to beat...and this fig was right! Like biting into a soft juicy honeycomb!

Thanks for the advice johnny. I was gonna let that one sit another day or two, but my four year old just had to have it....she's got me wrapped, what can I say? Well I've had my eye on the second fig now for two days and I'm letting her set...if a bird don't get it, me and ms conadria have another date soon...

Interesting perspective Jarrett.
Brian, is that right up against the levee south of Belle Chasse? I was working down there a couple months ago, and saw something like that as I was jogging down the levee for exercise...

Mike,
It sounds like an interesting book, but I guess the real question as it relates to people's opinion of you on this forum is: Do you own a fig tree?  For that is something that we ALL have in common...

Second fig of the year award goes to.....drumroll........Peter's Honey!  Picked this morning.  This is my first "good" Peter's Honey this tree has produced for me.  The ones in years past were weak in flavor and sweetness.  I guess the tree has gotten a old enough to produce some quality fruit.  This fig had both a honey sweetness and some good "figgy" flavor also.  What a fantastic time of year for a figaholic!

I am a little worried about my Black Madeira at this point.  I got it from a local guy, who got it from another local guy lol....But the leaves don't look right to me.  The figs are developing slowly which is promising since it is known to take a long season.  But the leaves do not look right at all to me.  I will post pics when I can get some and let the experts say what they think...the tree is still young though, so maybe the leaves are just misshapen, or maybe I am over reacting...

Last year I picked a Celeste on 6/18 as my first, but this year, those are not even close yet.  I have a Peter's Honey and an LSU Gold that will be ready today or tomorrow for my second fig variety ripening.  The Cajun gold you (GENE) gave me last year has a nice little crop on it, and I am looking forward to that one along with the Lettsworth UNK...

Gene,
That was a main crop, to my knowledge the only breba I had was on a black mission and a mocking bird beat me to it.  Yeah, the fig was very mild of flavor and sweetness, but it was still good to have.  In my opinion it is very similar to atreano, and I will have to study the profiles closely this year and will probably be rid of one or the other.

Conadria wins the race this year! That was actually the first fig it made for me. Poor little guy struggled for a couple years stunted, but it has about a dozen figs on it this year. Shout out to OMOTM, thanks for the cutting from 2013 LSU fig day!

Hey Joe.
That looks delicious! What is the variety?? I have a Conadria that will be ready this afternoon with any luck, that will be my first fig of the year.  The air layer i did for you on my papa john is rooting and i think i will pot it up this afternoon.  I may not be able to get it to you before it goes dormant, but once it goes dormant, i can ship it to you as a bare root seedling.  Thanks for the pics...my mouth is watering...lol...

Brackish Figger, I have delved into grafting a little myself, but man, you take the cake!  Once again, that is an awesome tree!  I hope to have something like that one day, but I am still relatively young, and it is likely I will move in the next decade, so I am waiting my final locale to start such a masterpiece. Thanks for the pics and inspiration!

I got a "Sicilian Black Italian" from Jon several years ago and it is currently still in a pot.  I'm not sure it is the best fig for the climate down here in south Louisiana, because it always tastes a little bland and not as sweet as others.  That being said, I've never planted it in the ground, and so I'm sure the fig is not reaching it's full potential in a 3 gallon pot.  Don't get me wrong it is not bad at all, I just prefer other varieties I have to it.  It seems very similar in appearance of the fig to Papa John, but I like the papa john's flavor and sweetness more. That's all I got for you bud.  Hopefully you will enjoy yours!

Brian,
I acquired a fast growing fig through a friend, he got it from a fellow in Lettsworth, LA.  This guy was under the impression it came from Greece like 50-60 years ago. But the pic of the Thibodaux fruit looks very similar to the shape and size and color and skin thickness of the one I call "Lettsworth unknown".  I know most of the leaves on mine lack deep lobes and in fact most of the leaves are more cordate or "heart shaped".  Do you think it is possible that he has an LSU Thibodaux and his story is mistaken?  Can anyone elaborate on the predominate leaf shape of the LSU Thibodaux? Thanks

Hey Richie!  Yeah, I'm a transplant to Brusly, originally from a much smaller place named Bristol just northwest of Carencro...just occurred to me, I must have an affinity for places beginning with the letters "br" lol...
Wish i could help out with the flavor, but the only one i tried was from the LSU Burden center and the beetles had gotten to it first...so it wasn't very good... I just had started two cuttings so I had an extra one...

PS Richie - love the name of your nursery!

I have a small live plant I would be willing to mail as a bare root...I would be willing to mail it for postage or for a trade of a cutting of an interesting variety. I also have small St. Anthony's fig plant I could also mail. I also have a few real slender Genovese Nero cuttings, some LSU Gold cuttings, and one Peter's Honey cutting...not looking to make any money, just getting rid of surplus...

Anyone interested? You can PM me...

PS I've kind of been looking for a RdB for a little while now...

Waynea,
If it's from the same accession as the one Jon sent me, it appears it will have an open eye.  I've had fairly good figs off of this potted tree, but all in all I don't think it is at it's peak in the southeast.  Good luck with yours...

Well Karl, that just adds to the confusion...lol. How's that Genovese doing? I repotted the black Madeira you traded me into a high organic pitting mix, and it is loving life...probably put on 5 inches of new growth and 5 or 6 figs...couldn't be happier with the trade hope we can continue to share varieties in the future...

Ed,
My St Anthony fig came from pitangadiego via ebay.  In the description of the variety on the figs 4 fun varieties page, it notes "a large yellow fig", but then the pictures there are a darkish fig like the one i have pictured.  I do not know the source of the conflicting depictions of this variety.  Just realized the pics of the eyes were not included, so here they are...

Here are some pics I took yesterday evening of these two.  The taste profile for St. Anthony was mildly sweet with a suttle figgy flavor.  I think I may have picked it a day early, it was starting split and I didn't want it to spoil.  The Papa John is my wife's favorite fig, so I'll go with her description for that one - Sweet, but not too sweet; figgy, but not too figgy...a perfect blend of the two...
