I bought a brown turkey from our grocery store, stop n shop.  I remember thinking, "Holy Cow!  Figs grow on trees, and I can grow them here in CT?"  I never did get any figs off of that tree and then lost it last winter.  :)

Awww, and this comes right after a thread on this board about how the Jolly Tiger is one of the easier plants to identify with its variegated leaves.  That's kind of sad...

I agree, your yard is gorgeous, especially the cactus!  I keep hearing the voices in my head saying "Well, we did need the rain..."  :)  Love those cacti!

Nice!  I have never heard of a Black Zadar.  That is a very cool looking fig with the inside coloring!

I purchased a brown turkey from our local grocery store, Stop N Shop. The tree grew figs, but they all just disappeared. I blame the squirrels. Then I had three brebas, but they all fell off. So I am looking towards my first brown turkey this year, maybe next month? The BT got me into figs, so it is, for now, near and dear to my heart.

I bought some of their cuttings and one plant. I received some tomato seeds as the free gift. I didn't get anything with the plant.

It's very cool to find a tree right in your neighborhood.  I haven't seen any here in my area, at least growing in the ground.  There are a lot of Italian families in the next borough over.  I did hear a story from a colleague about an older Italian man carting his trees outdoors earlier in the season.  I'm looking forward to going back to NYC to keep an eye out for their trees.

Oh! Another jolly tiger owner! Keep us updated on its progress! I don't have one, so I will live vivariously through other jolly tiger owners! :-)

I ordered the LSU purple from Floridanursery. I think when I bought mine, it said it was supposed to be 4 to 6 inches, but the one I received was not that big. However, it was very healthy and has grown quite a bit. It will be maybe two years before it has a fig, unless it really shoots up by the end of the srason.

Suzi - bummer on the desert king cuttings.  My desert king cuttings (not from Bob, but from another member) grew like crazy!  So hopefully, they'll kick in for you soon.  The ones I bought off of eBay titled Red Sicilian are very slow growing for me.  I had them planted in bags for a month, then moved them to Anderson band pots, and I just now have leaves after about 2.5 months.

Oh!  We're going to have the grill running this weekend.  I am going to try this - well, except for the strawberry balsamic, but I'm sure I can come up with something.  whoohoo!

hehehe....I'll stop by the church.  Can you imagine the conversation?  Well, my fig tree was reading the boards with me last night, and um, there was this other fig that um....yeah, that would go over like a lead balloon!  :)

I think my Black Triana was looking over my shoulder last night, because this morning, it looks pretty close to Dieseler's picture!!  Yesterday, it was fine, this morning, it's splitting at the eye!

I have to say I completely laughed out loud over here reading this thread.  I can honestly say that I detest earwigs.

For my cuttings, I started them in the shade and have moved them slowly into the sun to get them used to the heat.  However, I do tend to water them every day, and they seem to be happy.  Our weather has been kind of weird, cloudy and cool, then high 90s, back to nice 80s for a week, then two days of hot 90s, then back to cool days.  The figgies are hanging in there, though.

Wow! I'll have to stop by one weekend. That's a great deal. The only place I've seen here that sells figs locally wanted $60 for a 2 foot black jack.

Oh! Keep us updated. I'm in CT, too, and I was wondering how the Tiger would do here. I've been completing avoiding it due to the long growing season.

My green cuttings are definitely taking a lot more time and effort to root and grow. I moved six to band pots, and they've pretty much been sitting that way. I see some green buds though, so I think they're going to make it. Well, I hope so. Best of luck!

Hi Maverick - It was a snap together blueberry container.  My husband did finally admit that the snapping section was a little loose.  So I'm hoping for better luck later this summer for my figs and next year for the apples.

The leaves on the Jolly Tiger are lovely.  I may have to add that one to my wishlist.

I thought this was a great idea and used it to protect our very last apple on our apple tree.  The apple lasted two days before whatever was eating our apples popped open the container and ate the apple!  I guess next year we're going to have to twist tie the containers shut.  :(

Speaking of unknowns on eBay, does anyone know what this might be?  It's titled "Well rooted fig tree - large green figs".

I found the figtress.net site in a random search just yesterday and was wondering about it.  I may need to make a phone call, soon, now.  Keep us posted on when the trees show up!  :)

Thanks for the links!  Mike - I was looking at the pH Soil testers by Luster Leaf.  I think I'll pick one up.

I've actually been having trouble finding lime.  I checked both Home Depot and Lowe's here.  I must be missing them.  I think I'll stop by one of the nurseries, as I'm sure they have some.

Hi all...first time poster... :)  On the topic of lime, what do you usually use to test the soil?  I've seen some soil testing kits on Amazon and also seen some references to a pH/moisture meter.  Any recommendations or can you direct me to a thread if this has already been discussed.  Thanks!
