Lebmark you appear to have lost your manners somewhere so perhaps you need someone to remind you of them...whatever your problem is, I don't really care, this thread is supposed to be about figs and not about anything personal, there are plenty of things personal to you I could mention but I will not as that is not my style. If you have something you want to take up personally, you know where to find me. I will be waiting for you. In the meantime, take a midol and SHUT YOUR PIE-HOLE unless it is about figs or something I have mentioned here.

Alan Mercieca you should be ashamed about attacking Wills in this thread. It is most ungentlemanly of you. Wills was once here, now he's gone. He does not have a voice to defend himself. Whatever your beef is with him, take it somewhere else. It sounds like sour grapes. You are the last person I would expect to smear a defenseless individual.

I get a real kick out of snarky, arrogant newbies posting sophomoric, conclusory, vague allegations that are of no particular interest.  Like if I said hosting a Facebook fig page that misspells the names of many figs and specializes in photoshopped pictures does not make one a fig expert, that wouldn't be very convincing now, would it? Just a lot of conclusory, "formulated arguments."

I am willing to concede there appears to be a difference between the Becnel Smith and the JFE Smith.  However, it may be overblown.  Cajun's Dan's blog is inaccessible but if only we could go back, it stated quite unequivocally and authoritatively that a Smith fig grown in colder zones would have a darker skin coloration so it may be they are the same.  I do recall my JFE Smith and Texas-BA-1 having very similar leaf patterns.  In any event, I agree with Ray that whatever people want to call my JFE Smith, it is without doubt my best overall fig, the taste is superlative, it does not split, drips honey, and ripened an abundant crop over an entire month starting August 19 this year, and it grows extremely vigorously and nicely shaped.  There is really nothing more I could ask for, and so it is my No.1.  I do not see any resemblance between my Smith and Magnolia, sorry Dennis.  As for any suggestion that my Smith is a mistake, all I can say is I ordered two separate Smith trees in separate seasons from JFE and they are both the same.  It would be rather odd for them to commit the same mistake twice.  Nurseries are not perfect.  The Black Madeira situation was unfortunate, but I think JFE has consistently shown that they are at a completely different level than some of the lesser quality nurseries that deservedly have poor reputations, like Ty Ty and Willis Orchards.

I've never seen a gnat in 4 years of rooting in perlite with coir or peat mix here in the northeast. Cloners are also gnat proof. Gnats tend to proliferate in spring in my greenhouse, but even there they don't pose much of a threat to established trees.

I agree with Ross' thoughts, I will be using heat mats under my 1000 watt full spectrum bulb this winter. I also agree the Meyer's Leomon (all variants) is too finicky. Mine died. Never again. This year I am growing Eureka and Ponderosa lemons, and the Trovita Orange.

Thanks Harvey for pointing out that the saintly placard is based simply enough on an erroneous quote from Condit. If Condit tried to sell you the. Brooklyn Bridge for $1 that would not make it true. It should be plainly evident to any onlooker that a pyriform fig with a neck is completely different from an oblate fig with no neck and different pulp and leaves. And as for Alan's comment, Europe is not the LSU fig field. No one has been "breeding" figs there besides mother nature. All of these mutations are naturally occurring, and as we all know, the best way to come up with a unique fig is to have a bird crap a caprified seed that becomes a common fig. I attached the relevant, erroneous section from Condit's book. For over 1,000 years the papacy lied, in writing, about its earthly empire, basing it on a writing called "the donation of Constatantine." Braver men than myself proved it a forgery. I think we can all agree Condit may have made some mistakes too.

Sas thank you for the reply, I actually love the taste of Panachee, it is an excellent fig, both lemony and berry like, but the Col de dame texture is clearly different, it is berry like but with a pasty texture, low on seeds and crunch.

I hate to tell people they are totally wrong but on this thread two statements are TOTALLY WRONG so here it goes:

1. Panachee is not in the Col de Dame family. It is not a Coll' de Dama Rimada, and I don't care what any placards said. Panachee is a variegated version of the Bordissota/Bourjasotte/Brogiotto cultivar, hence Panachee in spanish is also known as Bordossot Blanca Rimada. In order to be part of the Col de Dame family a fig must have the particular neck and Panachee does not. You do not need to be an expert or a geneticist to see this. This should also put to rest the rumor that Bourjasotte Grise has anything to do with Col de Dame. It does not. And for the record I do grow both Panachee and Coll' de Dama Rimada (MP) for several seasons so I also have personal observation on this.

2. Cuello de Dama in Spanish is occasionally used as a synonym for Col de Dame but let us remember that the Col de Dame variety is native to Catalunia and Mallorca, and not other regions of Spain. There, it is known in the Catalan language as Coll' de Dama and sometimes Coll' de Senyora. Cuello de Dama is an entirely different variety of fig native to the Extremadura region, near Badajoz. It is often used for dried figs and is entirely inferior to Col de Dame, which is one of the most superior figs grown in the world.

A very touchy Frenchman appeared on the other forum (he has not been seen since) to announce that the proper waay to say it is Grise. There is no Spanish version so you need not trouble yourself with any confusion. I grow 5 different Col de Dames and I do not see much difference. There may be one or two from Mallorca that are radically different from the others, that is where the unusual ones are from. My personal favorite is CdD Blanca-Negra, which matures a bit earlier than the others.

Where did you get your CdD Grise? That does not look like a Col de Dame. The neck is wrong and so is the pulp. Apparently there is a false strain of CdD Grise circulating. It still looks like a good fig though.

I, like some others here, have no skin in this game. I don't even post much here. But some people are just too needy. The poor guy has said he is working from dawn to dusk and even into the night. He is clearly overwhelmed. I have 50 trees and feel overwhelmed. When exaclty is poor Greenfin supposed to find time to respond to all the kvitching here? He doesn't seem like a scammer to me. I'd say placing a 2017 order before I got my 2016 order that is delayed is probably a foolish move but there is too much mudslinging and whining here over this. I am sure this thread will be locked soon. In any event it seems clear many people continue to have faith in him, so the naysayers are not really creating much of a groundswell. Give it up. And Good luck to y'all! Too much animosity. These plants are a blessing-but not worth all this bad blood and emotion.

I have my figs behind birdnets. But birds and squirrels are not the only enemy. Yellowjackets are sooo evil. I have tried everything in the book. Onslaught is the only poison that will kill the nest, but the recommended bait (dead chicken or fish) does not work this time of year. The only other kill trap that will at least kill many bees (and flies) is the one with a dark sweet liquid l(like coca cola). All others are bull. I gave up because too many still devour my precious crop so I bought agfabric mosquito netting and I will completely block all possible critters. Probably wont be able to set it in place this seasom but we'll see about that.

Blackfoot, I do not insert the drip line into the fill tube, I insert it next to the main trunk. I believe Bill does the same.

I should also add that the fill tube can be made superfluous by adding a drip line over the top into your SIP, which Bill does and as of last year, I am also doing.

Subject: Bills SIPS Replies: 63

Bill uses mushroom compost as medium and I do recommend that over promix or any 5-1-1 mix. The fill tube goes to the bottom, the cutoff pipe rounds are below wire lath and a layer of burlap, so while some soil mix can get in them, it is generally not much. The fill tube definitely does not go down into one of the pipe circles. The water you send down the fill tube flows into the soil around the pipe rounds, which is the wicking for the SIP.

They don't sell they are not a nursery. They are a conservatory and agriturismo (like a B & B). Occasionally the owner will sell a small potted fig for shipment inside Italy only. No EU, forget it.

Levar

You are a trip. I agree with much of what Levar has said. My advice: Growing cuttings into trees is an extremely time-intensive proposition. If you are a beginner, by all means do not start experimenting on expensive cuttings. It'll take 2-3 years to become well practiced. And you will lose some for sure. So learn the art slowly. Or, if you can afford it, buy reasonably priced trees. Time is money. I have grown many rare trees from scratch and saved myself a lot of money. But it has taken so much time and effort, I am not sure it was worth it. Over and out.

Ok folks here are all over the place, the correct Spanish word for Prickly Pear is Higos de Tuna, so the labelling was correct, there was no mistake. It is clearly not ficus carica. Prickly Pear is a fruit of a cactus, it is not part of the ficus family, and not related to figs. End of story.

Drmsafar exaclty what are you trying to prove by publishing kkk's name and hometown? That is very unkind and mean-spirited, how would you like to have your name and address on the front page, with unkind insinuations? This is a place for opinions, and comments, the true identity of a person is not only irrelevant, it is none of your damn business.

Toysan have you been using hormone? Many times hormone will produce roots but inhibit bud break. I have several times seen an apical bud form 1 or no leaves, and then totally stop growing for an entire season, while a side bud takes over and becomes the dominant branch of the tree. Then the next season, in spring, both buds will break. Its just the odd nature of some cuttings.

FYI Mr Pons told me he did not have any Martinenca Rimada available to the public last season, it is not clear if it was caused by health of mother tree or perhaps a desire to decrease availability in the marketplace. I am very fortunate a friend donated MR cuttings to me and I rooted a small plant.
