Preto, like a lot of tougher varieties to root have a stalling period. I also had one I rooted from tyro and right around this time, it stalled on me and didn't start growing again until late summer. I thought it had died on me a few times. So, if the stem where the leaves were are green and healthy, keep it barely watered for the roots. And if you are able, take it outside, above 60/70, and bring it inside if it's lower than 60 or so. Good luck, hope this helps.

I usually wait until I see new leaves before I consider it adjusted. Some cuttings take as little as 1-2 weeks or as much as a month to adjust, just depends on how much disturbance the roots endured.

Greenfig,

In my experience, all newly rooted cuttings are very sensitive to movement and have rather fragile roots.  The more experience fig rooters will tell newbies to leave the cuttings alone for a reason, whether they are rooted via cloner, perlite, water or soil, all the roots are fragile.  And breakage will result in either a halt in all growth and/or death of the cutting.

As far as sending something so newly rooted, to me it's like sending a raw egg.  If you can secure the egg in a way that leaves no movement (remember the drop the egg from ceiling experiment?), and you can do it with the newly rooted fig cutting, there might be a chance of survival.

I think it's better to pot it up and wait until it's established before sending.  My postal people have a habit of drop kicking everything sent to me, so well established plants are the only way I would accept a fig tree.

Matt,

Don't know if you already called them to make sure they have what you are looking for, but when my husband went on a business trip he stopped by for me. And guess what? They didn't have what I wanted in stock, they can get it to any of their location but they need at least 2-3 business days.

Thanks for all who bought! Packages are done.

HI Everyone,

I started getting into figs in 2012 and have yet to offer any cuttings since I was not able to get fruit for most until this year.  But I’d like to offer the first 5 people the following cutting package for $44 each plus $6 for shipping.

All cuttings will have 3 nodes, the top will either be the slant cut side or marked with an arrow. None of the cuttings have been washed or bleached yet.  After you get the cuttings, I suggest you wash (soap and warm water with a brush), dip them in a 10% bleach solution for 30 seconds, and dry them without rinsing the bleach solution off. Label each cutting and if you don’t plan on starting your cuttings, store them via wax cut ends, plastic wrap, vacuum seal bags, or however you choose in the frig.  I’d recommend that you air them out monthly and check them for mold, if you see mold re-wash them and bleach them again before putting them back into storage.

Okay now to the cuttings included in each package, there will be 14 varieties, 2 cuttings of each variety:

Negronne EL, this was one of best this year.  I wasn’t convinced this was a good fig, but  this year it proved me wrong.

U. Carini- Got this one from Figgy Frank

Panachee-this one gave me 3 figs and all three dropped before getting ripe, I’m assuming it’s age related.

Hardy Chicago-What can I say, it’s common but a favorite.

Marseille – EL, I’m not impressed by this fig, but than again I’m not overly impressed by sugar figs in general.

LSU Purple– this one has not ripened any fruit for me yet.

Atreano OR – This one was sold to me as Atreano OR, meaning it’s not the RR version.  My husband didn’t like it as well since it can be soft and almost liquidy when really ripe. Definitely a consistency issue for him.

Dark Portuguese – Bass strain, this was a work horse this year, with over 100+ figs and it was a great Mt. Etna type.

Battaglia Green – this is the original Battaglia Green, it has given me Brebas and a few main fruit this year, but really late, it should be started early to promote early fruiting. Green fruit with deep red center, berry tasting.

Nero 600m – This one gave me fruit after Negronne did.

Vista – I had lots of Brebas on this one, but only a few main.  The brebas were quite tasty and a pleasant early producer. (early June in Zone 7A)

MBVS – Another common but good fig.

Black Greek – Marius strain, this one was my favorite fig this year.

Sicilian Red – this was one of my husband’s favorite fig this year.

Plus an extra mystery cutting or 2 depending on the pack as I don’t have enough of these to include in all packages.

Please assume all my fig were exposed to FMV and no shipping to HI, AK or outside of the USA.

Please email at twovkay@yahoo.com and wait for confirmation before sending  money via Paypal.  The cuttings will be sent out this Monday, Nov. 23, 2015.

Thanks,

Von

Steve, will keep you and Gary updated as I get these going. And if I'm lucky, you will get a plant (if you want one) when you get the ground cherries. I plan on getting those started in March, so will have them available sometime in April, if you are still interested.

My mom loves the stuff and I tried it many years ago.  I had to hold my nose!  It was creamy custard like with a good taste, that is until you breath it in! That was it for me.  I couldn't take another bite.  So yes, it is good, but the smell will turn most people off (or me it did!).

I been fighting gnats and now spider mites (neem oil wkly) for the last few weeks.  I noticed that the sticky fly strips from Home Depot have caught more gnats then the yellow sticky paper and it was cheaper by far.

I have also been using Gnatrol WDG, expensive but well worth it, when you consider all the money and time you have already invested in your cuttings.  The first 2 drenching have been at 3tsp per gallon (they suggest up to 4-8tsp for extreme), plan on doing that again before watering with 1 tsp per gallon.  If you like me had a medium to heavy infestation, you might consider buying the 1 lb gnatrol.  I bought the 5oz at first and it only did 10 gallons of the product. I also used dechlorinated warm water and only mixed up what I needed for the day.  Hope this helps.

Timmy,

1. I use a heating mat for my cuttings, and for the most part they are directly on top of it. I think as far as heat transfer, you will not get alot directly from the mat, but will get enough.  I would also watch out for temperature, unless you have a thermometer.  I set mine at 77 degress.

2. As far as coco coir, I spoke to a friend who was using straight coir this year and he found that it tends to stay pretty wet, even when runged out.  He suggested that I use a mix of 50/50 coir/perlite.

Hope this helps you with some of the questions.

From bigbadbill,
"I'm glad this thread got resurrected. Most of my cuttings are nicely rooted except for one nasty variety: Bayerfeige Violetta. It has been over a month and no signs of even initials"

I'm with Bill on this one. This has been my toughest so far, still have a few more to do, but it's been 2 months and finally have some roots. No leaves yet, but a few roots.

Welcome Alma! You live in a great place for fig hunting. There are areas like Little Italy and Greek town where I'm sure there are some figs growing. They might have taken a hit this past winter, but with good roots should have made some sort of comeback. Unfortunately given where we live, we need to protect all young trees for the first few years of their lives.

Johnny, nice work! Give roots some time. For me they tend to develop after I get leaves, the heating mat will improve your chances of getting strong roots.

I read that some will use it with perlite and others who use straight coir. So you could test both and see what works best for you.

Richie, there's a thread called "rooting in coir" from FMD. It has some good info in it. Also there are some coir that has salt in them. You want to avoid those.

Richie, here is a good link to fungus gnats.  I don't think they are the same as fruit flies.  The larvaes are what does the damage to your plant and could possibly kill a young cutting.

http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05584.html

The information in that link is pretty interesting. They also mentioned that the adults are attracted to peat moss, so the conversion to coco coir rooting medium might be a good thing.

Charlie, am waiting patiently(not) for my Gnatrol, and have been spraying with pyrethrim for the adults, but there is only so much that can be done until I get to the larvae.

Hey Steve, I should start them in Feb/Mar, but whenever I get a new batch of cuttings, I'm so excited I want to start a few...so I understand and will always a few starts to play/fuss with over winter.

Rafael, the gnats are in the plants started in the summer that I'm babying in the house. The potting mix is Fafard and MG, which is full of gnats.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Calvin, the legginess seems to be under control now that I added some additional lighting. FiggyFrank, bought some coco coir and will probably try that for the next batch of cuttings. Richie, some are still in the fish tank, but of course some additional encroachment on my hubby's man cave has taken place as all of them are getting bigger :-).

Just wanted to give an update on what is working for me for my first time winter rooting.  I've had some limited success in rooting cuttings in the summer and moving them along to the pot stage.

It's seems like getting roots is not really the problem, most figs want to produce roots.  It's getting them past the cup stage which has been the hardest for me.  I've tried a few different methods, like rooting in a closed shoebox with promix and perlite...not a bad method, but getting the cuttings out after they rooted caused alot of broken root damage for me.  I even tried the L.A. method (not at all successfully), most of the cuttings just sat there (4wks).  They finally rooted after putting them into cups, but it was not a good method for me.

So the method which proved to be the best for me was the water method.  I would place the cuttings after I cleaned them and waxed the top into a cup of water.  I replaced the water every 2 days and in about 2-4 weeks I have root initials (the white bumps on the cuttings).  If I had any cuttings that were not going to make it, they usually showed mold problems within a week or so.  I then potted them in 80% Promix & 20% perlite and place the cups on a heating mat set around 77 degrees.

I have moved a few from their cups into trade gallon pots and they have responded well so far.  But my biggest problem to battle has been fungus gnats and spidermites.  I have a few baby plants from this summer inside and they may have contributed to the fungus gnat problem.  I've ordered some Gnatrol and have been using fly strips and yellow cards to reduce their numbers.  I've noticed the the yellow cards don't catch as many gnats as the fly strips do.

A few lessons this experience has taught me... don't start the fig cuttings too early (February-March would be a good time for me in VA), when using the cups the larger the better 20oz or larger (I like to look at my cuttings alot, so a clear cup works best for me to see the new roots), try not to mix your outdoor plants with your new starts-gnats become a big problem along with spidermites.  Again, I am definitely still a newbie when it comes to figs, but thought there might be some value to sharing my experience so far.

Galbun from Dfoster started in early Nov, this is not the only one of many that started for me from Dfoster.

U.Lake Spur from Charlie. Easy rooter, nothing will kill this one.

U. Carini from Figgyfrank, a bit stubborn about roots.
