Charles,

No, it was just 50 acres, but pecan trees. Was very nice. I used to fly small aircraft out of Boerne, over Medina Dam, Leakey, Bandera, etc. loved the scenery from above.

Welcome aboard,

Welcome, Charles. I live near Atlanta now, but used to own a small ranch down the hill from you in Hondo.

Stay safe, everyone. Georgia has a lot of flooding, too. Not nearly as bad as Missouri and Illinois, but bad.
It has been unusually warm here, too. It has been in the high 60's and low seventies for a couple weeks. Most of my figs in containers still have leaves. It is supposed to get down to 27 degrees or so for the lows over the next few days and mid-50's for the highs.

I pulled all the potted figs into the garage this evening, not sure how the temp swings will affect them in his year.

Glad to see you are getting figs. I have my fingers crossed for next year.

Elin,

Very interesting article. Thank you.

I hope we all have a relatively mild winter this year.

I suspect the NYT article below has been posted on the forum before. However, I just stumbled across it and thought of the terrible weather in 2014 that damaged so many trees. I hope we all have a moderate winter and everyone's beloved trees fare well.

Dennis,

Those look great! I have a couple two or three year old Peter's Honey I grew from cuttings that were a gift from a friend here in Atlanta. I have a few figs on them now. PH were the first fresh figs I ever tasted and started this addiction. ;)

His trees were very large and productive but he had to cut them back last year after the historic, cold winter in 2014. He says they are coming back. I hope they do.

Prayers to all in the flooded areas. I experienced some pretty bad floods in South Texas years ago, and these are even worse. Hard to imagine.

I saw a few damp spots on my largest tree the other day. A five year old Brown Turkey (I suspected it might be a Celeste, as the figs were actually tasty). I did not think anything of it. Today, I noticed the "wooden" toothpicks extruding from all its limbs. Upon closer inspection, I saw many, small dark beetles on its exterior. I did a bit of research here on our forum and decided the best thing to do was remove it. I cut it down completely and have removed from my yard. I am a feeling pretty blue as this was my largest tree and produced virtually all the figs I expected to harvest this year. I have planted a few 3 to 4 year old Celestes in the past week or so. I have a Peter's Honey in the ground that should produce a few figs. I hate these bugs! Going to get spray for my other trees tomorrow.

Suzi,

Thank you. I have a friend in the Atlanta area, and we exchange cuttings, too. So, I will still have a couple other varieties to experiment with. I give some Trees to friends and family. I think ultimately I will select a few of the best tasting and higher yields, and stick with them. Then again, I may be fooling myself. Your place sounds beautiful. Our house is on an acre, so some room, but not enough!

Frank,

Thank you. I have heard good things about RDB. I am also looking forward to the Brooklyn Whites. I have a Maltese Falcon on the way. Other than that, I think I went from zero to lots of varieties very quickly. I will focus on what I have this year. I would like Maltese Beauty and Col De Dame Blanc, but those are the only ones I "covet" - at-the moment. ;)

I have Celeste in the ground now, also a tree which was sold as a brown turkey, but I think may be a Celeste and my first fig tree, a Peter's Honey. I have a Greek Fig tree and an Adriatic JH that I will put in the ground in a few weeks after the last threat of frost.

That should keep me busy for awhile.

Chris,

I have all the potted figs in the garage and will keep them in tonight and tomorrow night. The Celeste I recently planted in the ground are about 7 feet tall. They have small green buds on them. No leaves yet.

Chris,

Thank you. We are supposed to have a couple cold days this weekend. So, I will keep them in the garage. I planted a few larger Celeste trees in the backyard this week too. Hopefully, they will do well.

Subject: OT - Any fig growers in San Antonio? Replies: 15

Dennis,

My wife is fron Central Texas. We met when I was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division and stationed at Ft. Hood. We lived a number of years in and around San Antonio. We loved it there. It has become congested and busy. You have to do some research as there are rougher sides of town.

We had a small ranch (50 Acres) of pecan trees in a town called Hondo, about 45 mins southwest of San Antonio. later, we moved into town on the north side just outside of the loop (1604), near hwy 281. Others are correct, you will need to live in the burbs if you want 5 acres or so. There are many nice areas and towns to choose from. San Antonio's water is provided by the Edwards Aquifer. Wells were grandfathered in 20 years ago. I am not sure what the current state is for obtaining water rights on new homes.

San Antonio is a very veteran friendly town, with lots of medical facilities and bases. Winters are usually mild. Periods of cold and ice are brief. Summers are brutally hot. 105 and hotter is not unusual. We used to have to water our house foundation periodically to help prevent it from cracking.

We had a wonderful time and would go back to San Antonio in a heartbeat.

Figaro,

Great pics! I wish I could grow tropical fruit trees. I have a friend in Miami. He has a large avocado tree that appears to be very old. The avocados are very large and are bright green. He lost a papaya tree a year ago or so. Many of his neighbors have mango trees that are huge.

My Uncle, Bruce Pearl was in the first wave to hit Omaha Beach. Made it without being injured physically. He was terribly wounded that October in Aachen, Germany as he was exiting a foxhole for an assault. He was out of the war and returned to North Carolina to raise a family. He was as many of the other heroes, a very gentle and humble man. I always looked up to him.

Jennifer,

I live in Roswell. I have several young trees that I kept in the garage this winter and they are all leafing out well. I have a 3 or 4 year old brown turkey that encountered a lot of damage from our two ice storms this year. I had to prune a lot of dead, brown, ends off. It is leafing out now, but a lot of the leaves are damaged. I don't know if it was the ice or something else. The buds took longer to appear than others, but pruning aside, it looks like it will make it.

I lost a lot of ends on limbs of my 3 year old Brown Turkey. First fig tree I ever planted and with hindsight would not have purchased BT. The weather was very nice in Atlanta a couple weeks ago, so I planted basil and tomatoes. Lost all the basil and most tomatoes in the cold snap 8 days ago or so. I should have paid heed to to saying in these parts to wait until after Easter to plant. I covered up or brought the other figs in and did not incur much damage to them. Mostly peter's Honey, Black Mission and Celeste.

Vito,

Yes, I love Arthur Ave. I have supper at Dominick's, then cannoli and espresso next door. There is an Italian lady there who is renown for her singing. She reminds me of Martin Scorcese's mother. Then, I pop across the street for the sausages and cheese. You should have seen a Georgia boy trying to pronounce soppressata for the first time or two. It was not pretty. There is a great place in Marietta Ga, called the Cajun Meat company that sells Tasso ham, Andouille sausage, great BBQ rubs, hot sauces, etc.
I carry a soft ice chest in my suitcase with these items, give them to my family there in NY (Cold Spring), then return home with all the great Arthur Av goodies.

BTW, I have the Charcuterie book you mentioned and enjoy it a lot. This is another great book I bet you would love. You can preview at Amazon...
