Things are starting to look good here now. We've picked a few tasty figs, but so far our Negronne is in first place.

Greetings all. Been a little while since I've posted, but the fig collection flourishes here in Maryland. No real over winter issues this year even though I housed all my containerized figs in our unheated garage. Had about 35 trees in pots in our garage and only lost one. My in-ground Hardy Chicago and Celeste trees have done well. All survived our MD winter, cold wet Spring and are all alive and pushing lots of new growth. I have a few newly propagated Celeste and Hardy Chicago trees, all doing well.

My biggest and most satisfying start is my Black Madeira. Started from a UC Davis cutting, two years ago, it's now a real, thriving tree!

The last few years I had our trees on our deck, but they really took over! This Spring, a new semi-permanent location on our driveway. One advantage is that they get full sun from morning 'til evening. Just need to reconfigure the drip irrigation system I had in place.

Here are a few pix of the motley crew of trees on our driveway.

Greetings all. After a massive set of thunderstorms rolled through the area yesterday, nice sunny warm day today. Figs are loving it! Wanted to provide a quick update on my Black Madeira that I started from a UC Davis cutting last year.

For reference take a look back to posting #58, pix no. 1, taken 28 March.

And here it is today.

Topic: Starting New Figs from Twigs

I know that a lot of folks get the fig bug during the Winter doldrums and start cuttings as soon as they can.

- Pros: makes you feel good; plants get started and are growing for a month or more, large starter trees, etc
- Cons: gnats and bugs all over; leggy growth; lots of heating and lighting requirements; lots of messing with getting things right and then keeping them right as plants gain height; dry indoor rooms during Winter means working harder to keep humidity at optimum levels; etc.

This year, I started my cuttings a LOT later, I took my Celeste pruning cuttings and had them in a sealed baggie, in unheated garage for a long time. A few weeks ago, I took a few of these cuttings, placed them in cups with a coco coir/perlite mix, sealed them with baggies overtop to keep moisture in, and they are growing. Pushing buds, then nice new leaves. No messing with roots and all those stages where most ppl mess up, no indoor gnat issues, more sun through windows, etc. I can leave these plants like this for a long time as roots get larger and larger. Then one up pot and I'm good for the Summer.

Here are a few pix of the process.

Pix one, baggie off to take clearer pix.

Pix two, cuttings in cups covered in baggies.

In pix three, you can see that I keep the lid on using the center straw hole to hold the cutting and keep more moisture trapped down with the roots.

Update as well on the weather: forecast low temps for this week is mid-40's - no way these will impact your figs in Catonsville. :-) and the high temps close to 70 daily, we'll take it!

Habib, thats way above freezing. No reason to bring your trees back inside, especiallybwith these long warm days ahead as well. I didnt see where they are calling for that cool of overnight temps. I'll have to check. Regardless, 38f is fine.

A relatively chilly and very breezy Sunday here in Maryland and we're expecting a good rainstorm to pass through here this evening. That said, the potted figs are appreciating the semi-overcast day and are not getting "baked" in the sun. Here's a few pix of the Conandria, nice new leaves and a few breba as well. These were very large and delicious last year!

One thing for sure, my plants that were over-wintered in our cold storage room are weeks, maybe a month ahead of any of the in-ground plants that went through the Winter "protected". The in-ground trees hardly breaking any bud growth.

Chad, Once the plants were outside, greening buds present, some small leaves as well, I gave them a few waterings with the MaxiGro fertilizer ref'd above. Ive fertilized them like this maybe twice or three times. Weve had a good dose of rain the last few days, so I plan to let them dry out a bit now.

Fig trees are doing well! I think I managed to move my potted trees outside on the perfect day a few weeks ago. Since that date, we've had increasing daytime temperatures with just cool, not cold evenings. I can see growth daily in these trees, I'm amazed at the beautiful new leaves. From cold, dormant branches, to nice spring green leaves and brebas. The Madeline de Deux brebas are amazing ( at least I think so ). They continue to swell and look fantastic. Attached are some pix of Madeline's brebas - looking pretty good!

I would venture a guess here and say it's a breba, looks like it's forming from old growth, plus this year's growth doesnt look old enough to support a new fig. So, breba.

Well, the day time temperatures are increasing nicely, but overnight lows continue to sink. All my potted trees that I put out the other day have been soaking in the warm sunshine, thats for sure. The breba crop is growing as well, not impacted by the cool evening temps. Today, I was able to finalize the seating arrangement on our deck for all the plants, so next big project will be to hook my drip irrigation system. Should be easier this year since I left the hoseline in place from last year. Pots were all pretty dry so today I gave them all a drink using the newly acquired MaxiGro fertilizer.

Heres a few pix: look at those brebas!

In my opinion, it's the potted trees that have really leafed out that you have to worry about the most. A few more cold nights here won't harm a tree that hasnt leafed out. But, given that we are only a few days or a week at most away from overnight freezing temps, might as well wait. Here in the greater DC area, calling for 26F tonight, but remainder is all on the up-n-up. Remainder of the week highs to be high 60s. Low 20's out right now this early Sunday morning, so nothing growing outside, and my outdoor figs are on hold.

Ive not used this particular product before, but have seen others on this forum hype it up, with what appears to be good success. Nice lush plant growth. I guess we'll see the results this year.

Never used any auxins, so can't comment, maybe others have and can comment.

I agree, drip irrigation systems on timers is the way to go, not only for potted trees but for in-ground figs as well. I installed my system two years ago, expanded it again last spring, and it worked so well. Had mini drippers to all my pots, some micro-sprayers as well. Even moisture levels through the summer I'm sure helped over all vigor of our trees, increased fig production.

Id say we are close to the end of the cold n snow. Daytime temps are now all on the increase, with longer days, shorter nights, etc. I would say you are good to unwrap your trees and let them enjoy the warm days, cool nights. It will take some time for them to pop, so let them free. Good luck.

This hot one day, cold for many is no good! Our figs are confused! We as keepers of the figs are confused! I had a few potted ones outside for Thursdays "hot" temps of 73f, but based on forecast of lots of rain, coupled with cold temps, I brought them back in. My outdoor bird bath formed a layer of ice! Supposed to be pretty cold again Sunday night - then warming up. Potted figs soon to go out!

Kane - thanks for the tip. Our first fig that started this strange collection was a HC purchased a few years ago. We now get 100's of sweet tasty morsels from this one ! Since then, have been able to find Brown Turkey, black Mission, and Celeste. By accident, we picked up a HC that turned out to be a Conandria - now one of our most favorite. Nice semi-overcast, warm day here with temps in the mid-60's. I have too many potted figs to play the fig shuffle, but I did move the Vista outside for the entire day, and gave it an extra watering. Getting close to moving them all out, but this friday ther's talk of a mixed bag of precipitation, snow, sleet, rain. So we wait.

A few evenings of below freezing won't hurt anything. It's the extended deep freeze that does the kill tree damage. With high daytime temps now, I'll bet your safe to uncover. I'm getting ready to move my banana tree out soon. It can take a freeze or two.

Chris, yes it really is time to get the figs growing! Today in our area, close to 70F - now that's some Springtime weather we can all use in these parts. One could probably risk it now and put out potted plants. From now on we should only get an occasional overnight or early morning cold snap. The advantage is that on days like today, the trees would really snap into attention.

I've read that it really is the cold temperatures that keep plants dormant. Once the daytime temps start to get in the 50's and low 60's and above freezing at night, it's pretty much hard to keep them dormant. You might have to start the fig shuffle.

Hey Chuck

I over winter my potted figs (about 30 trees) in our attached, unheated sunroom that I keep darkened throughout winter. A month ago or so I open up the blinds and increase watering. To give you an idea how cold it gets, when we had that cold snap awhile back, water in my fountains actually formed a sheet of ice. These buds really just started to pop this past week to ten days.

So, i was able to uncover my "fig hedge" today that consists of three HC and one Celeste. They all look really good and have survived yet another Winter. The interesting thing is that the HC to the far right was not pruned too hard in the Fall, but I tied it down horizontally as close to ground. This tree, on close examination, actually has some nice green buds protruding.

1. The buried trees
2. A bit of top exposed
3. The process is slow...

Greetings Steve. Pretty good day today to finish up the uncovering process. I just finished my others. Yes, i agree with giving them a good cut back in the Fall, that's pretty much what i did to all my in-ground trees. I'm sure garage temps are a few degrees warmer and will bud out earlier there then if u bring them out soon. The potted trees I have in our cold sun room are all starting to push green buds. One actually has some leaves i think because it was kept a bit warmer near in the garage with my banana plant.

Steve , Frank

I guess it is time! Good news Steve on your trees, I guess the protective measures taken on the in-ground trees worked. I'm getting ready to go outside right now and uncover my larger HC, the one that had top branches exposed, but bottom fully covered with shredded leaves and tarps.

Yes, the weather forecast does look pretty good. Rain today with increasing daytime temperatures, a few low overnight temps but nothing extended that will impact the tree growth. It will take a few weeks for these buried guys to really wake up and produce tender shoots. By then we will be in the clear. At least we better be!

Frank, you actually put your potted trees outside for good? I'll probably wait a few weeks yet, at least until Spring! Most of my dormant trees are showing greening buds, one that was in the garage all cold winter, actually has a few tender leaves just opening.

Happy MD figging all.

Key to pix:

1. HC as it was in the snow sleeping
2. Unwrapping begins, nice and protected inside
3. A young shoot looking nice and green
4. Unburied, about half way done. Main trunks all exposed.
5. HC, all cleaned up and looking good.

I started them in a small cup in the coir and transferred them to the 1 gallon pots , I started watering immediately Pro-mix dries out every 4 to 5 days if yours is staying wet for 2 months you might have a problem with root rot , 2 months is way too long to stay wet , might be time to change your soil mix

My plants seem to be doing fine. After seeing initials, I placed them all into 1 gallon pots from the get go. There wasn't much moisture to begin with.. just a large pot for a small cutting :) Thanks!

Alma, you might want to drape gallon zip bags over the tops of your cuttings/pots to help keep the humidity levels very high around the cuttings. Ive found this really encourages growth. Good luck.
