I put my order in a few days ago and I really don't recall what was available back then.

Is strawberry verte the only new variety you added?

Hello Frank! Glad to hear you ended up with a survivor. It looks like I'm down to two trees out of five planted in ground last spring. Two of those didn't leaf out last spring and I doubt they'll be coming up now. I plan on taking cuttings this fall of the new growth I get from the two survivors and potting those up for a few years, then in the ground they'll go...

using a ranco temperature controller to turn on a heating coil when the sun isn't out would work...I think making a solar air heater (look on youtubes for some good designs, or builditsolar.com) that directs it's hot air into a dehydrating box with pullout shelves to lay fruit would work. The ranco controller might also be able to turn on a fan for more ventilation if it gets too hot in the dehydrator box.

I don't have any experience with it but have been entertaining the idea of building a solar dehydrator for fruits and vegetables for a few years now. What part of CT are you in John?? maybe we could get together and build a couple...

how thick were the trunks Vince? I see so many massive trees in Bronx, NY and none get any kind of protection. These trees must've survived some pretty cold ones in the last couple of decades. I'm sure how mature the tree is has a little to do with it, along with cold hardiness of course.

Welcome to the forum Alan! what part of CT are you in?

Welcome Lena & Figs4life!! my SIL lives near 146th and 20th ave, I've seen a few trees in that area. Once you become a pro at spotting trees you can ask the homeowner for cuttings, it is hit or miss though, but a great way to find trees that don't need protection for your area.

Sounds pretty bad....

the other day I read something about cooking chicken breast after covering it with egg and equating that with eating the mother covered in amniotic fluid...sometimes I want to be a vegetarian.

there is a line, I think giving blood to calves crosses that line. the way to protest is to "growtest" hopefully this summer I can grow all the fruit and vegetables we'll eat here at home.

Hello and welcome Alan!! where in CT are you?? I'm in Brookfield. I will be experimenting with outdoor planting using some of the cuttings I've received growing in the Bronx, NY unprotected. I'm in zone 6b and some of these plants are old enough to have survived some of NYC's 6B'ish winters in the past few decades. As for the rest of the figs that are known not to do well with our cold winters, fig shuffle in the spring and fall for them.

I have over 150 rooting or rooted!! a ton of those are from my trees, I offered but didn't get enough requests to dry up the supply. I couldn't just dispose of them. I have a small farm not too far away that has tons of 1 gallon pots for free, I have to pay them a visit to pick up some more. I'll be giving plants to family, friends, members of the forum and some to the farm that is giving me 1g pots for free (they can sell or grow if they wish). many of the cuttings are from members on the forum, THANK YOU!!

My main concern is protecting the young plants from deer. seems I will be fencing off another section of the yard for use as a fig/fruit tree orchard, just have to convince my wife that I can make it look good and still leave her enough yard. when we first bought our house she didn't care for a big yard, now she wants to have a certain amount of open space and grass. I like to grow food not lawns, and I don't have to mow trees every few days.

seems like big plans, hope I don't burn out, lol...

I started rooting a ton of my own cuttings that i had left over, and plan to start some airlayers at the start of the season....we'll see how this goes.

Lenticels I think... seems like it might be a gas exchange problem more than a moisture problem. Most bigger cuttings had more of it, other cuttings under very similar conditions (moisture and air exchange) looked almost clean.

BTW, great job Jennifer! patience evades me...how do you do it for 30 Days?!?!

My cuttings are so full of the fluffy white stuff on the bark, literally all over. Your cuttings look so "clean" (free of the fluffy white stuff). Am I doing something wrong or am I not doing something I should be doing??

some of the figs in NYC have survived down to -3 in the past 20 years (a ton of them look to be at least that old). this season it will just be a matter of Identifying what varieties they are.

I'll see if one of my Japanese friends at work can help with the translation.

Free range eggs are it!! sometimes I feel a little strange eating them because they are soooo dark yellow. I currently have 16 chickens (I hatched most of them) including 4 or 5 roosters, some of those will be going soon...

In the future I'll do all my cuttings the traditional baggie/wet paper towel, newspaper, sphagnum moss etc... with the set of cuttings that wilted (not all of them wilted BTW) I started the cuttings in the same one gallon pot to save space, all of them without separation. I hadn't setup lights yet so I had to get them danger close to work with the lights I did have. It was a great mess of roots (awesome root growth). come to think of it, it may work to root like this as long as one remembers to up the humidity when the transplant happens. I have a few other gallon pots planted in the same manner with cuttings from my own trees... guess I'll find out.

Dave, the unknowns have been perking up ever since I upped the humidity...100%
I expect them all to make it. the ones with wilted leaves have started to pick up and I expect the others with completely dried and shriveled up leaves to put out new shoots.

Tony, you're too much!! There are a bunch of huge trees all over flushing as well, all huge, in ground and unprotected.

Subject: Plant it and forget about it... Replies: 8

this is how most of the unprotected trees in NYC look, except the trunks are 4-8" in diameter. seems to work (if growing sticks is your goal) but to have more fruit that is easier to pick, manage and allows the plant a better chance at health there are better ways.

Sarah, those are the names the guy gave me when I bought them. He had a ton of figs and definitely new how to grow them, at least 100 (if not hundreds) of pots all over his property. he said he moves them all in for winter. I rented a Uhaul and it was a lot of back and forth driving that day to make it happen, when I finally got the trees it was late and I didn't want to take up any more of his time (it was his granddaughter's birthday. ... to keep from giving any of these figs the wrong name, lets continue to call them unknown for now...sorry

Dennis, the orchard looks wonderful!!

How far apart did you space the fig trees? you might want to trim more sod off around the trees to make for easier mowing. I found out to use my mower I had to leave a 6' circle without grass (when i first tried my hand at fruit trees) to make sure i can make all the turns without missing a spot. Did you mix up your own dirt to fill in the holes or just used the dirt you have?

Thanks,

Jose

P.S. I'm now kind of glad it didn't go so well, I have more space for figs!!

I used the mosquito dunks and it worked well for me. I put it inside a bowl with warm water, let it sit for a while, then stirred it to break up the 'donut'. I then water the plants and each container gets water with chunks of the mosquito dunk in it. I even buried some of the pieces of mosquito dunk just below the soil line...gnat free for a while now, fingers crossed.

I recently got cuttings of an inground tree near haffen park (sp?). I was in the ambulance, it was in the area we usually sit and I saw him getting out of his driveway. I said hello and we got to talking fruit trees, he has a few in the yard. he said its a big red sweet fig and has been unprotected for 15 years but he doesn't know the variety. the tree needs pruning and he said I can come by and have it all if I want it. I'll talk to him about airlayering next time i him, so he can give trees to family and friends.

Hello and Welcome Maritza!! There are a few members here from the Bronx. I work in the Bronx, up from Jacobi hospital to 243 st and white plains road. Like others have said, it will be hard to keep it to just a "few" trees. you'll find a place for 10 or 20 more potted trees, lol. I bought my trees from someone with 1/4 acres and he had at least 100 potted plants. He still had a lot of room to plant other things (the pots where all along the perimeter of his yard. Do you know which varieties you want to add?? are you interested only in trees to grow in ground (many of those around the bronx, good eatin')?

Jose
