Subject: Beware: Monsanto at it again Replies: 79
Posted By: IWannaFig Views: 2,814

Monsanto is one of, if not the most powerful company in the world. A farmer found Monsanto wheat growing in his fields. Monsanto said they destroyed all there samples of wheat and weren't doing any testing on wheat.  Monsanto had a bill passed with the USA budget months before hand that offered broad protection from lawsuits, and other things.

It hurt the wheat market because genetically modified food is banned in over 50 countries. Several of which said they postpone or cancel wheat importation this year from the USA. It also stated that there seed could be marketed no mater what the Supreme Court said. So in short they had a broad protection bill added to the USA budget, and were put above and untouchable by the Supreme Court. At the same time saying they would, and could legally, market there seeds even if there was considerable know health risks.

No company should be able to control our government like this, or be above the supreme court.

The Monsanto bill did get repealed in September it looks like, but still very scary to think a company can do this.

Hope the links are ok

The fungus itself  shouldn't cause lung issues. There is a small chance someone could be allergic to the spores but it is like that with any fungus. I would be more worried about the other stuff in the mix. I use promix hp and use to grow mushrooms. I would recommend a mask for the other stuff in the mix.

I walked into my local nursery today, and they had a hardy Chicago fig tree. I was excited about it because we don't have any fig trees around here. It was the first and only one I have ever seen locally. I think the owner ordered some because I have been getting stuff for figs for a little while now.

When I was looking at the other plants a older guy can in and asked if they had any fig trees, which was odd because there not around here. The owner hesitated and looked at me so I told guy he could have it. The guy told me that he hasn't had any figs since he was a kid. He told me that where he grew up there were huge fig trees and he remembers all the kids would climb them to get the fruit.

So all in all it has been an odd fig day for me.

Happy 4th everyone be safe!

I'm using a pretty airy soil. Will the lime fill in the soil over time or will it flush out?

Thanks Pete for the pictures. I think that's what's going on with mine. I will get them in a spot with more shade
tonight after work. Will any of these leaves recover?

I didn't add any fertilizer to the mix when I made it. I was following the directions in the mg feeding about every two weeks. On the dyna gro liquid fertilizer I'm following the maintenance directions with is 1/4 tsp with every gallon of water. With that I'm feeding every watering. I water every day or every couple of days as needed.

Also, the lime is dolomite. I can't find the crushed limestone. I'm really not sure how much of this to use at this point so it is trial and error. I think the pH should be good but I will retest next week. I can also test the nitrogen.

I'm using pelletized lime. I had a ph of 6 and I top dressed with about 1 tbsp last week. I was using mg fertilizer wand just switched to dyna tech bloom booster. I will get them to a shader spot tonight. Do you think it could be to much fertilizer? Thanks for all the help

Thanks Pete, I ordered a water meter the other day. It looks like the water drains pretty well, but it could be holding more than I think. They have been out in the sun in the same spot for several months. Do you think I should move them into a shot with afternoon shade?

Can anybody give me some ideas as to what could be causing this? This figs are in a 5:1:1 mix with added lime. I have a lsu gold in the same mix and gets the same fertilizer and it looks great with dark green leaves.

@Jason. I do have lime in my mix. I will edit that. I had to use pelletized so I've done soil testing to figure out how much and when I need it.

@Steve, I will get some pictures posted of my leaves in a different thread. It is odd some leaves look good others look bad. I don't think the soil and fertilizer is the problem. I think it was to much rain over the past months and then it got really hot and dry. I had several nice rooted cutting I put into 1 gallon container over the winter and I lost all of them due to over watering. I believe that figuring out how much water and when to water is the biggest problem I have had.

@Pete, how do you modify your 5;1;1.

Thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else is using, and the results.

I live in Missouri and this is my first summer with figs. My containers are black and are sitting on a concretes slab.

I've been using the 5:1:1 mix. 5 Parts pine bark fines, 1 Part perlite, and, 1 part promix hp instead of the s. moss. I also add lime to the mix and as needed.

I was using mg fertilizer and have switch to dyna-grow Foliage Pro 9-3-6 and dyna-grow Liquid Bloom 3-12-6. I am going to start fertilizing with every watering.

I have been having some problems with my leaves, but I'm not sure if the problem is the soil mix, rain, or heat. Time will tell. I'm looking forward to doing experiments on several mixes and fertilizers next summer.

Thanks , that makes sense we have had and extremely wet spring. Is there anything I can do for them? I really don't want to haul them inside when it rains. Should I try to put something on the pot to keep some of the rain out?

I'm sorry, I'm completely oblivious to what you are talking about. Do you have a link to the rules or something I can look at. What is being pinched? Buds, figs, limbs? Also, is this to produce figs or to cause more branching?

Rewton, I did notice all the variations. I wasn't sure if there was a general consensus on parameters or if every likes something different. I started will Al's 5:1:1 mix, but I have slightly modified it as well so I see your point. What made me think about this was the lime question. I had no idea about top dressing with that much lime. Seems like anytime anyone asks a question they get answered with links to great info that I have never seen. Would love to see all that info in a central location, and not lost to the web.

Ya, I know when I say something about figs here people look at me like I'm crazy. I ask people if they have ever eaten a fig and I always get the same answer or some variation of "I've had fig newtons." lol

I would prefer the country to. I would love to move out that way somewhere like Washington state or Oregon. I doubt I ever will though.

Is there anyway to do pins for soil/recipes, amendments, possible fertilizers, and other general info.

I know Al has a lot of info spread through out the internet as well as everyone else. Some pins for general info would be very handy, and would save a lot of time. Would also cut down research time, and the info would be up to date. There is a ton of great information, but a lot of us cant find it easily if at all. When we do some/most of it is way outdated.

Would be a great way to put knowledge from older growers in the hands of new growers. Would give more experienced growers a place to compare growing parameters. We could throw related links into the thread. Would also keep a lot of the repeat questions down.

let me know if this is completely insane.

@rcantor Have you use the http://www.amazon.com/Xtreme-Gardening-4402-Mykos-2-2-Pound/dp/B003STB5N6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1367703685&sr=8-3&keywords=mycorrhizae

It is just the mycorrhizal fungus I think. I was planning on using diluted mg for my fertilizer with every watering.

Also, Paul Stamets has several good books. He has done a ton of research on fungus.

@Charitup they are a celeste, green ishia, Adriatic, and an unknown was told it looks like a "Votata" ( Golden Honey ) when I got it. I lost several cuttings this winter including an rdb, Wuhan, and several others. Believe I potted to early and watered to much. All part of the learning experience.

@javajunkie Thanks, I will post more pictures as they age.

I have an excel and a lsu gold on the way. I'm really excited about those as well.
