Subject: Too late in the season to transplant to a SWC? Replies: 7
Posted By: philos Views: 142

I would go for it!  I am not too sure about fertilizer, though. I usually only add fertilizer to my figs in the early spring.I have not issues replanting any figs, as long as you minimize damage or disruption to the roots when transplanting (unless, or course the plant is dormant).

Best of luck with the move.

My Inground figs did not produce since they were all frozen by this years harsh winter. However, of all my potted figs, my overall winner was no doubt RDB. Great taste, excellent productivity, and most importantly: it was able to ripen fruit (and still is since it still has some fruit on it).
Thanks for sharing the white ischia pics and info. They definetly look good, even though I do not carry that many white/green/yellow figs.

Eric!!!!!  That looks amazing!!! --and tasty.

I think all the comments here are right on. I usually pick this particular kind (RDB) when it droops a bit more.  According to picture 1, and 2, probably in about 2 more days. They will be ripe, but the flavor will be kind of "figgy". where as if you give it a few more days, and wait for it to really droop and wrinkle up (in about 3-5 more days) it will become very sweet and taste a bit more "Honey/berry" like.
Of course, this findings are just according to my planting conditions at home. Should not be very different from you, since we are like neighbors.

I have not been around this site much lately, but I am sure glad to see you around!  we gotta get together again soon!

Hi There,

I think what you have is ideal so far. At this particular stage I would leave the plant alone, as you want to see growth from both top and bottom. You want root growth, and of course you want you plant to break buds.  However, What I recommend (since this is what I do) is that I only allow a max of 2 buds to grow on top. Some people may disagree and only allow one. The reason for this is that you do not want the plant to focus so much energy on top growth instead of root growth.

Best of luck!

PS: at this phase you must really be watching out for humidity in your rooting terrarium/space. Too much humidity will easily kill that top growth.

Interesting post: thanks for sharing. I was under the impression that both were the same and that they even get labeled as both often times. I think this action tends to make things a bit confusing for everyone and for identifying the characteristics of each.

I would also like to see this 2 figs compared to Nero 600m, as it is often compared to VDB.  any opinions on that?

Thanks guys!   I appreciate the feedback. Deep down I had a feeling the plant was doing Okay, but the curling up I have not seen with my other plants, and did make me a bit nervous.

Anyone have this same experience with a another fig tree?  (continuous curling up of leaves)

Hi Barry! indeed, Bellcare refers to that famous nursery. The figs in this particular discussion refer to a few plants on sale currently on Ebay. Here is a link to the mentioned gentleman (Pete).

Great video!

So you believe they are both equally cold hardy?  is the Nero600 reputation as being being real "Hardy" a myth?   have you examined their hardiness to identify if one trully lives up to the reputation? I would like to see a comparison of their Hardiness!  --As this would be the one variant in both.  perhaps...

Greetings Folks!

I am super excited to finally get fruit from my Maltese Beauty this year after rooting it 2 1/2 years ago. I cannot wait to taste some of its fruit!!

However something has been strange about this plant in particular, and has had me thinking: the leaves have been curling up...symptomatic of when a fig tree is taking in too much water (please see pictures of plant in question). However, I have tried watering it less, controlling water intake, and the leaves seem to still stay curled up, as you see in the picture. There have been points when the plant gets "droopy" and in need of water, and the leaves are still curled up!

They have stayed this way for pretty much this entire growing season, and do not seem to just want to relax. As is visible, plant is growing well, there are plenty of Figs growing on it and there has been considerable growth.  Any recommendations?  / Suggestions?

Has anyone experienced this with another Maltese Beauty GM155??  -All my fig trees in containers (about 35 currently) do not have this problem. Only my Maltese Beauty.  Any ideas?

Yeah, I would say no to what I see. I have 2 black Maderia plants and they do not resemble that. However, they are infected with FMV and that does change their leaves a bit. Nevertheless, your leaf example does not really match what I have generally seen in BM.
Good luck with your growing!

Thank you for the great information that you have now made available online. Also, for clearing out some questions regarding this matter.
Question: Is there a list of all -known and possible- Mount Etna Figs?

I must say that I was a bit shocked to see Dark Portugal there, but I can definitely now see the resemblance to the mentioned varieties.

I am sorry to see this very frustrating situation. One of the things I do is to try out figs, and see how they react to my area, and how well they do. If the fig does not work for you, and keeps dropping the figs after you have exhausted methods of care, I would suggest trying another variety in your area.

I have given away figs to other people (of course, in other Hardiness zones) to see if they have better luck with them.  That way, my work and care pay off with another variety... unless, of course, the particular tree has a sentimental value or something like that.

Best of luck there!

Oh, and yes:  Cover them extra well for the winter!   They will no doubt have Die back, but hopefully minimum.

My understanding is (and I am not an expert by no means!) that there are 2 types of known V. Sika. One with elongated leaves, and one without. I was under the impression one was sourced to Herman, and the other one to Bellclare Nursery. Am I wrong???

I definitely agree with everyone's comments thus far: It seems to me that it is time to up-pot into a 3 gallon, and use more soil if the mix is very "airy" and will drain very quick.  The constant loosing of water will most likely stress the plant and will result in less growth. I would suggest adding some pine back on mix, and even a nice coat on top of soil to prevent so much evaporation (if that's also affecting the loss of water).   Best of luck!

I have left mine in a really hot shed outside without any problems! indeed, they rooted quite quick and had great success with that!
However, please note that real hot temperatures also mean lots of condensation/evaporation. Must check for moisture evaporating quick and drying up the cuttings if they are not 100% sealed.
good luck!

I agree with Ed. I am unsure weather it is possible or even worth the try. I would grow in pots, and then take them in for the winter. Then out in early spring... I do that currently, and I am in zone 6B.  all the varieties I have tried outside have vanished in this past few terrible winters.

However, all my potted trees are doing great!

My advice is that you grow in pots, and then root some cuttings from your plants. Once you have a established plant (3-4 year old) You try to plant that baby outside in early spring.  Let it stablish well in the ground, and then protect it extremely well that first winter. I think that there is a possibility that a more matured plant would make it. I think many people would and could disagree with me. But you will have cloned that plant, and you wont loose the entire plant.

Best wishes.

Great looking plants!   good move: Re-potting is always good when done before the plant is really struggling to keep in a small pot. I usually check the roots on my figs, and sometimes repott 2 to 3 times on the same year!  of course, it depends on how aggressively the specific variety is growing. I have had 2 varieties this year that are agressive growers and have kept me busy doing this type of work!!!

I usually keep my plants on part shade for a couple of days and place lots of Pine bark as mulch to help the plant re-establish and accommodate nicely.

Best of luck out there!
