Get a load of these brebas!

Picture later.

Also, it looks like everything survived the winter. Except Barry's Bulls Balls.

Update! The birds found these brebas (but not others nearby). Them birds know a good thing when they see it!

I don't think I will ever put anything inground. For one thing I really don't have the room. Meanwhile, I am going to California the first week of April, I wonder if I should just leave everything in the garage until I get back. This is a little off topic, so sorry about that. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Very informative, Dave, thank you. My garage figs look pretty good, I think they all made it, unlike last year.

I did this last year. You cut the corners off the bag for circulation. It worked for birds, but not for squirrels. It did not cook them here in Philadelphia.

I forget when I tried jujubes, but I remember being distinctly underwhelmed.

This past summer I was at Linnilea Farms and jujubes came up in conversation with the owner, a very venerable gentleman with a lot of botany under his belt. I forget his name.

Anyhow, when I said that I was totally unimpressed with jujubes, he replied that Li jujube was the best fruit he had ever tasted.

That picqued my interest!

Good grief! Eat a Hershey bar or something guys! All this strife is not only unpleasant, it is totally boring!

Meanwhile, here's what's on my mind. Let me bore you, but in a gentle way that will lull you to sleep. Make zzzzs not war!

1. Why oh why did the red oil paint marker "labels" melt off my fig starts? Am I going to be able to figure out what is what?

2. Will my Violet Sepor make me some heavenly figs this year? Are they really as good as Dennis said?

3. Should I be bringing in the little guys on the cold days, ala Rafael?

4. Will I ever get a Gene Hosey Paradiso? Do you know that Gene Hosey actually answered my email? He said, just mention it on the Forum and a miracle will occur. The Forum will hook you up. Hrrumph.

5. Can I figure out how to keep off the dastardly squirrels this summer?

6. Now that I am 60, is there any chance that I will be able to change into somebody with a real work ethic?

(It would be nice to morph into one of those hobbyist workaholics. Someone with an incredible front yard like something from a magazine. You know the type. A wizened but sprightly old lady, puttering outside all day, wearing the big sun hat, hoeing away from dawn to dusk. Drinking her unsweetened ice tea. In back of her are a lot of home made hoop houses and other crafty stuff. In other words, someone more like Harvey (however Harvey is a PROFESSIONAL! I just would like to emulate his energy, which I saw first hand, unflagging even in temps pf 102!) Or Barry. Etc etc etc. I really should have thought up some female examples sorry Harvey and Barry. But I digress.)

7. That's it folks! Come on get happy!!!

I paid my slumbering trees a visit yesterday. Looking good. The large ones are for sure doing fine, the smaller ones, hard to tell but they looked OK. I did a light watering.

The pomegranates: I can't tell with those but I'm not too worried, as last year they looked totally dead, but were totally alive. Not a single loss.

What I am trying to avoid is losing a bunch of fig trees like I did last year.

So far so good.

Cheers everyone,  from deep within the Sleet Capital of Pennsylvania!

To Jeff looking for the Panache, you can always get a nice sized tree from Bill's Figs in Flemington NJ. I think they are $35. Not sure if he ships however.

As to the criminal enterprise, it's hard to fathom. If you have this much criminal talent wouldn't it be more profitable to work in a different criminal enterprise? That's a lot of work for not that much money ... ?

One that people don't rave about too much is Petite Aubique. Now that is a crazy good fig. Along the lines of VdB but with that j ne sais quoi if you know what I mean. Just incredible. Big producer too.

This I know as I have been eating the living daylights out of it for the past two summers at Barry's. YUM YUM YUM! I wonder what Hermann thinks about this one. It sure brings home the bacon in our weird climate area. Big winner.

Yes Dennis Yes! Gimme the Green!

The other one I am hotly anticipating is that Violet SEPOR you raved about in 2013. I got cuttings from Jon last year, and one made it.

Another one that I am also really waiting for is that BLACK ZADAR from Vito. Oh. My. Lord. Kind of butt shaped (ala Jennifer L), and the interior is sort of bronzy. The taste? I do not have the words! Like nothing else. DROOL DROOL DROOL.

I'm looking forward to more Rockaway Greens then JH Adriatic to compare to the Rockaway Greens -- could JH Adriatic possibly be better than Rockaway Green?  Then there's Green Ischia, and I'm sure I'll think of more ... but as of the moment, I'm a wannabe green fig eating machine.

I grew cuttings last year so here is my report. They make a remarkably pretty little tree, even in year one. I gave some away, to spread them farther. Can't wait to taste the figs this summer (I hope). Thanks again COOP.

I have read that the Negronne has a slightly thicker skin? I lost my Negronne last winter and thought it would be OK to just have VdB. Oh no. Now it's looking like I'll have to replace it. Here we go, into mid-Winter FigMania!

Even though it's an exciting development, I'm suprised that no one is saying: "PINCH THESE FIGS OFF!" Especially with a delicate tree like Black Madeira. I ignored this advice in my first year, and a lot of those first year figs cost me the tree!

Vasile, all my half ripe figs are still there!

I guess that squirrel got sick of smelling the Plantskydd.

I hear that it is going to be warm for the next couple of days so maybe I will get some. This little VdB is a real work horse.

Looks so great Vlad. Someday it would be nice to figure out where you are. I know in general, but I need to see it on a map. What zone are you in? How was the flavor on that VdB. Off topic, please send a picture of a map with a big arrow pointing at your town, for the clueless ones here!

That is a great looking fig, Vasile.

You're giving me hope for some of mine that are still seeming to ripen. Like a Black Madeira that started coloring up yesterday. Also I have about 20 VdB still ripening 2 at a time (although a lot slower than before).

The diabolical squirrel has not been around, but if that Black Madeira is still on there  when I get home from work, I will be surprised! Ditto the VdBs. I also have a couple of Rockaway Greens, and a couple of Black Zadars hanging on, but I think they're too small to even hope for them to ripen.

Cheers to all my fellow figaholics!
