I may have given it a month head start in the greenhouse, I don't remember for sure, but I don't think I did. Most figs will ripen some of their crop here, I may just not get all of the crop to ripen by frost.

I don't really remember. I only got a couple of figs this year and it was one that I reduced due to it being so similar to other figs I already had.

My Flanders got MUCH better late in the season. Make sure to let it get super ripe.

We tried putting out humming bird feeders this year to attract them... never saw a single hummingbird. I thought we finally had one this year and my wife let it into the house by accident. After chasing it all over, we realized it was a hummingbird moth.

Sas they normally aren't. That one may have been a breba. Here is a different video of the main crop.

Bait traps always worry me. If you have ever used a japanese beetle trap, you quickly realize it attracts beatles well, but kills only part of what it attracts. The rest eat you alive.

Sorry, SWD is Spotted Wing Drosophila... a type of fruit fly.

Does anyone have any experience using pesticide foggers? I lost my battle to SWD this year and have been taking a look at foggers like the Burgess propane fogger and the Longray foggers.

My hope is that the foggers will give me greater coverage than the hand pump sprayer I have been using. I had been trying to stay organic, with spinosad, but I give up. I am ready to use anything that works and rinse my figs before eating.

Yes, anyone getting a pack can ask for add ons. I haven't had the time to put anything up on eBay lately. My trees are all in storage untrimmed this year, so I will take cuttings as needed rather than filling my fridge like last year.

In your video, you agree with me that the figs are watery, no flavor, and bland, so by your comment above it appears you are pleased with it  based purely on size??

Maybe anyone with in-ground has different experiences that want to chime in....

Size and color. If it was all about taste I would only have Black Madeiras :)

The main crop ripened properly. I listed it as maybe because I didnt have a proper fig ripen. That being said, I don't know that I have seen photos of figs and leafs of what is considered the true variety.

I just made some cuttings packs in the Christmas spirit... first ten folks to PM me get them. Each pack includes six cuttings...

Ronde de Bordeaux
Neri2
Nero 600M
Brogiotto Nero
Bifere
Malta Black 35

Two of the packs, chosen randomly by me, will have a Black Madeira or Figo Preto cutting.

Each pack is $30, plus $10 priority shipping.

You can check out most of these varieties on my youtube channel, PA Figs.

Unfortunately, I must not have taken any late summer videos of my Fico Bianco this year.  It was on my chopping block after poor performance last year as well as due to the open eye it has causing mold issues.... however... the end of the summer this year, it ripened much better and the honey blocked the large eye.  It was a very good honey fig.  Here is a video of the breba, which shows some of the issues with the variety...

I was very pleased with my Rob's Genovese Nero this year.  It is extremely different from my Genovese Nero AF, which in my opinion is likely I-258, or extremely close to it.  The RGN has a very unique color to it, a reddish tint, and produces very large figs.  The only fig that I have which is a truer red is my Pane Vino Dark.

Here is my video from this year on RGN:

I vaccuum sealed a lot of cuttings last year. The gas exchange did cause them to puff up, but I never had a problem with mold or rot. They lasted pretty long, but not as long as simple saran wrap.

I tried it and didn't like it for rooting or indoor plants. It retains a LOT of moisture. For mixing in a fig mix for containers it should be fine as long as you don't use too much, but it is not a 1:1 replacement for pine bark.

Probably not. Last winter I found keeping the cuttings less moist helped, similar to what I do for Black Madeira.

Bill I am happy to hear it is doing well for you! I'm on vac in Sodus and checked on the mother tree yesterday. The owner really cut it down this spring, but it really grew back strong!

Kelby said mine are ripening now at home, so hopefully he is enjoying them!

And I agree on rooting, extremely difficult!

I've been making my with bigger fig chunks... there is nothing like a big ol piece of fig in your jam on a cold winter night!

There was a recipe on Facebook recently that used honey and vanilla. I think I will try that one tonight!

Try sprinkling used coffee grounds around the base of the tree. It works pretty well for me.

It's a difficult subject as there are many different things that cause "spots" on fruit... insects, disease, mold, sunburn. This forum is also filled with people all over the country and world who have different pests and afflictions in their areas.

Geez you guys are really blowing this out or proportion I think.  I'm pretty sure Justin's source was me.  I'm pretty sure the Angelo's Dark came from me.  These type of fruit blemishes appear on some of my trees at times.  I do not believe it is the same as the referenced FMV issues that can show in fruit as this often occurs on some of my healthiest trees and then "scabs" over for the lack of better words, leading me to believe it is insect related and not the FMV affliction.  The fruit ripens just fine and to cut the tree down due to it is nonsense.  I believe it is insect related as I often see ants and other insects on the figs (could be coincidence and I'm by no means an insect expert to identify what the insects are).  I usually just leave the tree alone, but have also sprayed it with neem oil and it stops the issue, hence my assumption on insect damage.

Hi Bill,

Mine was pretty good last year as well!  I need to check mine, but unfortunately, I broke my ankle shortly after meeting up with you last week, so getting around the orchard is kinda tough right now.

It continues to amaze me the folks that say "yes they're legit" when the plants they have received have not even fruited yet.  Folks, until your plant fruits and even then, likely in the second year, there is NO WAY to tell if you have received the correct variety.  As someone whom has learned the lesson the hard way multiple times, do not claim your tree is authentic prior to fruiting.  If you want to sell/trade/gift cuttings from those trees, please let people know that you believe the variety is correct due to leaf shape, but have not seen the fruit yet.  This disclosure is extremely important.

For instance, my Green Ischia looks exactly like my Black Madeira until the fruit ripens.

Also, for any venom, run it under HOT water, not cold.  As hot as you can stand, for as long as you can stand.  It will neutralize some of the enzymes.  It was a lesson learned the hard way back when I had lionfish in my aquarium.
