Subject: Lampeira Preta source? Replies: 1

Is there an online nursery source for this variety -

or is this something I should look for on ebay?

Looking to add this to my collection in Pennsylvania, zone 6 -  for Breba crop.

All of my figs are in pots. I'm looking to put 3in ground. I wanted to plant a dark fig (decided in Sals el). A green berry type (decided on bass's Makedonian white... Which I don't have yet). Supposedly similar to Stella and one of the Vasilika Sikas.

I am looking for suggestions for a honey fig. Cold hardy.

I have a white Marseilles and Persian white in pots. Not sure if you would consider these honey or not. Maybe a peters honey ?? Any other recommendations ?

I would intend on doing the necessary winter protection. Just looking to be able to have more sizable figs trees that a pot would not handle.

2 or 3 years ago I bought a "Black Madeira" plant from ebay user Gutterguy1000 who says he got his plant/cuttings from ebay user ZE_ZX.   Neither of them seem to be active on Ebay.  Although reviews for ZE_ZX show a lot of positive feedback.

Unfortunately, I have not transplanted my plant yet.  It's still in a very small pot.  I am curious if anyone else has purchased  a "Black Madeira" plant or cutting from either of thesr guys... and... how is your plant doing?  Do you have any pictures of the plant (leaves or fruit).

How authentic of a "Black Madeira" is it...

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

Sorry to post a non fig question...

I have seen a lot about Honeyberries in the last few years.

Can anyone attempt to describe the flavor and...

More specifically - Is this a fad type of plant or does the flavor warrant it having a place in the yard?

Sometimes I have noticed that some of these fad/exotic type plants are not worth the time or space...

Thanks for the info...

I agree that there was some reaching for light....

but also - if you look at the base - they had these 'shoots' coming out before I put them in the basement.

I have 2 figs that are in Pots.  I JUST brought them outside from the basement.
They have been leafing out in the basement... and have dropped some leaves probably due to not having a lot of light.

1. Now that I have them outside... I have a lot of green stems, but FEW leaves.  (since they dropped off)... will the fig tree leaf out again?

2.  My fig trees are VERY leggy. They have many shoots, but not a single leader... so the growth habit is extremely BUSHY and irregular..... as you can see from my picture.   What are some of my best options on how to deal with this....   I am thinking that this growth habit will not make for an attractive plant.

I am aware that there is a Belleclare (not sure if I spelled that correctly) version that is like Stella and Dalmatie.

And then there is another Greek one.

Can someone explain the difference and histories (As much as can be known) about both of these.  Common traits. (flavor, better/worse/ cold hardy/ origin)

Big / small / Green / Black, etc...  I am just trying to get a grasp of this without searching through tons of Fig Forum threads.

Just a summary of what is known about both.

Thanks

Hello
So I live in Zone 6.  Eastern PA.
I have several potted figs that are still outside.
We are going to have some weather in to the 60s and 70s for the next few days.
We are normally in the 20, 30s and 40s for this time of year.

Can anyone reccmommend what I should do or need to do with my potted figs that are still outside?

How much Dormancy is needed?  They lost their leaves... but I am not sure if they will go dormant if it is not freezing.

IF I bring the inside. (unheated basement).. how warm is too warm.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks Jc for the suggestions.  I was hoping for something less costly and time consuming.  I was hoping to somehow bide my time without causing my plants damage.  They are already in very large pots.  I don't think re-potting is an option.  They are pretty much at the size I intend on keeping them.

Grow Lights, if I had to, I would consider that, but it sounds costly for now -

Any votes out there for how to bide my time for a month or so without negatively affecting my plants?

Hi everyone,

Its my first year of having my potted figs (several varieties) in my basement.
Zone 6. It's fairly dark with a few small "basement windows".

It is February 8th and I just noticed that the stems have slight green buds on them...

Being that it is February 8th and likely a month  or so until Spring comes - what's the best way for this scenario to play out?

Thanks for the help/suggestions!

So what is so great about the Col De Dames? (or specifically Gris).

They are cold hardy apparently, but then also take a long time to ripen?

Why are the viewed as so desirable?

Are there other varieties of figs that they are similar too?

Ronde de Bordeax got a lot of press for being cold hardy and excellent flavor.
Same with Violette -

What would make someone choose a Col De Dame Gris over a Ronde de Bordeaux or Violette?

I guess the question is, what is the characteristic of Col de Dame Gris that makes it a stand out.  (I am hearing cold hardy, as many others are,...but then it also has a long ripening season...)

Subject: Light or No Light for Potted Figs during winter Replies: 3

I have seen several different opinions about this.

I brought several figs into my attached garage.  They are Potted.  Zone 6 in PA.

1.  Is it preferred that they are in darkness or have light, or no preference.  (I am confused because trees that are in ground and go dormant obviously get sunlight through the winter).

2.  Do figs go dormant in their natural habitat?

3.  What is the lowest temperature a potted fig should endure during dormancy... also... what is the highest temperature that a potted fig should experience during dormancy.

I am sure that these have already been answered somewhere on the forum, but sometimes its just easier to re-ask the question rather than go searching.

Thanks for the help!

These seem to all be small to medium figs.

Any recommendation for large Purple/Black varieties?

Are there any Pros or Cons to not letting them go dormant?

If I choose to let it go dormant for winter, what would be the process/requirements be to do so.

I do not have a plant light, although I am sure I could get one.

I am just not sure why to choose the plant light over winter VS letting it go dormant.

Would you recommend a plant light for my regular fig trees in POTS? or are you just suggesting the plant light because my one "tree" that I am inquiring about is so small.

This fig "tree" is only about 6 - 8 inches in a cup with decent root growth.  (I never transplanted it this summer).

I am in Zone 6, it lost its few leaves that it had...

Should I leave it outside longer, bring it in?

Any type of winter care?  (watering, fertilizer?)

Just looking for some recommendations to keep this alive so I can transplant in spring.

Hi everyone, my apologies in advance for hijacking the figforum with a non-fig question.

I am looking for a recommendation on an AMAZING tasting Plum variety for the North East zone 6.  I taste a lot of average plums. (grocery store).

I have had Plums from produce stands/grocery stores that have a deep red/almost purple interior with a dark skin.  I cannot seem to find this variety from google searches.

Maybe it is not a Plum, but a Pluot/Plumcot, etc?  anyway, any thoughts or recommendations for a Superb Variety?

Thanks!

I can try to get a pic uploaded.

I would like to acquire a tree from authentic source for this variety;
so I am asking for suggestions from an experienced Fig collector who is familiar with these varieties.   (I am worried that sometimes variety names may be used some what loosely, so I want to make sure I am buying a correctly labeled VioleteDB/Negronne, true to its name.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I thought that was common knowledge... hence why it is called black Madeira....?  (i don't think any figs are native to the USA?)

Just curious if this is an actual variety recognized on the Madeira Islands?

Or if this is a variety brought from Madeira and named in the USA (or elsewhere).

in other words - can we go to the Madeira Islands and get a Black Madeira fig cutting.

Similarly - It is believed that the Black Mission fig originated from the Balearic Islands of Spain.  Does anyone know if this is a recognized fig variety still growing natively there?

Thanks for the info! ;)

I would be interested in having some recommendations as to what I should do with it...

Keep it,
cut it and discard
try to root it?

etc.... ?

What you are posting is the Breba crop?  So no fig wasp was needed to produce that?

So apparently the Desert King fig will only produce a Breba crop in the North East, which does not require the fig wasp.

But, it will not produce a regular crop after that in the north east.

Is there anyone who believes a case could be made for growing Desert King in the North East?

Is the Breba crop worth it?

Is there any way to artificially pollinate the Desert King to get a the 2nd crop?

Where does the Desert King fig come from?  (country or origin?)

Thanks for the info!
