A pocket or sling made from the foot of a panty hose or knee high hose tied around the branch would keep that beautiful fig from feeding the tilapia again.  :)
Loved watching the fish lunch time, we used to take the kids down to the docks at the lake and throw out fish food.  Good memory, thank you!

First weekend of the month, time to give drinks to the basement dwellers, AKA figs.
Opened the door, turned on the light and did double take, triple take!

My figs (except for Black Jack) have all gone past breaking bud, most have a couple inches of growth, one even has 6 - 8 inches of yellowish stems and leaves!  Dear God, in ONE month?  With no light? They have not been fertilized since August, they received 2 cups water first weekend of Jan, all are in 5 gallon paint buckets except the Black Jack, she is in a 10 gallon pot.
The one window in that room is covered in foil, no light gets in.  Unheated basement, the room they are in is on north side.  Just been darn mild except a few cold days.  Like three days ago overnight low was 2, had about 1 1/2 inch of snow.  Right now it's 63.  Go figure.  Of course, the hyacinths and daffodils outside are coming up too.

So the big question is.... would it be best since they have budded and stretched out that I bring them upstairs to a sunny room out of direct light?  Or something else?  I am still shocked and scratching my head!

Thanks for best wishes Marie. My tree came in.  Don't remember ordering it 6' tall but guess I did.  It's now the biggest fig tree I have.

Wow, congratulations Charlie!  6 foot gonna be a huge jump start for your Black Jack!

You've done a great job with yours....beautiful color!  Kudos to you!  Despite what others might say, Black Jack does have a great taste.  Keep up the good work!  Great job...well done!

It starts to warm up here Mid March into April.  Stays cold here longer too than in lovely Georgia.
I have some cold hardy varieties, they are two years old.  I have not put them in ground yet though, maybe next year!

Pino, my figs are all basement dwellers during the winter.  I have no greenhouse, so they stay outside til first hard freeze, then I take them downstairs until spring.  When spring arrives, we do the fig shuffle back and forth to the garage.

This coming spring will be a bit tougher as I have 13 more plants to move than I did last spring.  ;)
I am very thankful to the Receiving Dock at work which allows me to borrow the GOOD wheeled dolly which is much better than the one I have!  I may treat myself to one like it this spring.

Hi guys!  I am back, left on holiday and just got home.
Thanks all for your wonderful comments, I appreciate them!

Dennis, yes she was a Monrovia plant.

I was out and about the Caribbean islands, and in 10 days saw not ONE, not one fig tree!  I had hoped to see some since it's so nice and warm there.  Does anyone know if it was a fluke that I saw none or is it because they can't grow there due to salt air or humidity?  The soil perhaps doesn't support growth?
Maybe I will post that question to the forum as a new topic, let's see if any of us on this thread know that answer.  Anyone?

Back to work this morning!  Thanks again everyone for your comments.

I can't help identify but it sure looks good, although probably will be more ripe if left longer.  It's a good looking fig though for sure.  Welcome to the forum, and I'm sure someone will come along and help identify your fig.

Fertilizer I use is Miracle Grow, the original one, half strength every two weeks.  Soil is organic container potting soil with some Vermiculite and some Perlite added to help keep it light since these are container plants here in the Midwest.  I topped off the soil with about 2 inches of mulch to help keep moisture levels more constant and prevent drying out or over heating.  This summer was fairly mild, so on the few hot hot days, I moved the portable fig forest closer to the end of the patio where the neighbor's japanese maple would provide a bit of shade from 3pm til about 6:30pm.  Other than that, they stay in full sun.
I'm currently patiently waiting for the bright purples of fully ripe.  Think another 3 or 4 days!  Supposed to get thunderstorms and or rain later today, if so - I am bringing these Black Jacks under cover so they don't get watered down or split.

I'm thrilled others are appreciating these lovelies!

I'll take a picture when fully ripe for ya Charlie!  To me, they have a jammy rich flavor, sweet, crunchy but not overly so, thin skinned.  Strawberry/plummy overtones.

Very nice!  I too have Black Jacks, with two tall mature plants in large pots and some one year olds in 5 gallon buckets for now.  Just turning ripe here in Kansas City area.  Still have quite a few green ones that are just starting to blush and swell, so thankful that our weather is holding out so they can ripen!
The Hardy Chicagos are still producing too, been a good year altho late.
Congrats on a good looking fig!

I know some here do not appreciate the lowly Black Jack, but I cherish their looks and their flavor.  May their fine form and colors be enjoyed.

They are especially large this year, although quite a bit later than last year.

Enjoy!

Is the Ice Crystal fig available for sale anywhere in the US? I've not found it here - only in Europe. Kansas City needs to have one tried in my location. I am a dreamer, but I am a fig growing dreamer.

Finally getting some darkening color here in Kansas City on the Hardy Chicago.

I had pinched off most of the figlets but saved some for sampling!

IMAG0613 (577x1024).jpg

On the other hand, the Black Jack seems to have picked up some variegated colors on the figs.  Leaves are pure green, but look at the figs.  Any idea why they are variegated?  They did not do that last year.  It's a two year old container plant.  Completely healthy, and I think the figs are beautiful anyways!

Yes, there was more moisture above than below.  It was definitely one that tested my patience and thankfully decided to finally do something!  The other two cuttings (other cultivars) were rooted and planted already,  both of those cuttings are crazy strong and the one especially is over a foot tall!  Good stock I gather!

Thanks you guys!  Appreciate the info, I potted her up this afternoon and have her sitting in between a couple tomato plants so she gets some shade with a little bit of sun through the leaves.  I'm planning on just letting her sit there until I see some buds and leaves.  Learned something new on this cutting!  That's what I'm here for, trying to learn so I really appreciate the info !

Welcome to the forum!
Others that have much more experience will come along and answer questions for you, I just started my fig journey a year ago July 4th!

If it was me that had scored this nice find, I would try to baby them from the shock of transplant and being out of the ground for 8 hours.  Give them some shade, keep them moist, talk to them and encourage them.  For this winter I'd protect them for the same reason, give them a good start and then perhaps next year see how it goes.  By protect I mean giving them shelter and warmth.  Bring in the potted one to the basement or attached garage and allow it to go dormant for the winter.  Lots of posts here on how to over winter potted figs.

Again, welcome!

Good evening folks!
I had received three cuttings in April that I got two to root and they are now very lovely plants.  The last cutting, it didn't root, had no buds, so I left its lid on and set it in the back bedroom where it got plenty of indirect light.  OK, so I kinda forgot about it since early June, ooops!! I went in the room yesterday and Holy Cow!  Look what I find!

IMAG0495 (577x1024).jpg
Why are the roots growing upwards?  I was thinking that may be where the moisture was inside the plastic bottle turned humidity dome.
I know she needs to be potted up real soon, but will the roots stay in the potting soil?  I would hate to think they keep trying to grow up to the skies.
There are no buds on the cutting, I am hoping they appear someday.

Any special tips on potting this up?
Thank you!
