your post no. 3 says desert king is a common fig,
in fact it is a san pedro which needs the wasp for the second crop
having said that it is well worth while having for its large
and excellent first crop.

Hi All,
i have a couple questions about the two above videos about t budding,

the cuts are made and the bud is slipped under the bark
with no linning up of the cambium layers,  is this normal?

the  rootstock needs to be growing so the bark will slip when cut
but if you take the chip from the scion when it is also growing the
bud would also be growing,
taking scion early for bud material and storing in fridge till the rootstock
is growing would mean the scion bud would not be growing and the bark not slipping,

how is this scinareo handled so as the bark on the rootstock and scion/bud material
are both slipping?

jsavkov,
dont worry your trees will not die.
when you replant when dormant it is common to use
a knife and score the roots in several places.

but when you replant during growth they say dont disturb the roots
which means dont score the roots.

so merely squeesing the pot and sliding the plant out
will not disturb it.

having said that i have repoted many small fig trees during growth
and knife scored as well with no ill affects.

as for your figs falling due to some sort of shock i cant say
for sure but i would be surprised if all was not well.

the fact that you have capri figs does not automatically
mean they contain wasps,  i have many large capris
that do not have wasps.
you will need to introduce them to your tree.

what type of micro nutrients do you add?
have you taken trees out of pots and root pruned at all?

i started about 110 desert king cuttings a few months ago
with about 80% success rate.

i started another  100 or so d/king cuttings a few weeks ago
and am expecting the same success rate.

the problem with starting so many cuttings is not only the
hassle of starting them in pots,
but the hours upon hours of repoting later.

so heres what i do.
get the final growing pot ready with moistened soil
cut the bottom off a 2 litre soda bottle
poke a couple of small holes near the top
grab a cutting, shove it in the soil
cover with bottle, with its cap on
record date and ignor for a couple of months.
if the  weather is going to be hot i mulch the top of the soil.

ok only looked at gillette.
so the confusion with fig names continues
if the above mentioned syn. are all the same fig
then all descriptions for each syn in each section
should be saying they are edible capri figs.

Subject: Still a little confused with capri fig trees Replies: 8

the figs4fun  varieties section does not say gillette/ croisic
is a capri fig.
other syn. listed are   pingo de mel,  mel,  st john and cordelia.

hi starch
i hope im wrong for your sake but id be very surprised
if that rdb in your first post has taken.
grafts should heal in the first couple of months so you
should be able to take the tape off and check,
bud is likely to just fall off.

hi ercan
d/fruit are not tropical ,  dont know about any freezing temps you may have there.

yellow d/fruitn grow just as easily as the rest and flower well, and are self pollinating.
the main differance is that all the other dragons are ripe  from time of pollination in
about 45 days  where as the yellows take a wopping 6 months to ripen.

there is no such thing as a male calimyrna fig.
capri figs are the males.
a wasp that lives in the male capri figs will deliver male
pollen to the female calimyrna when the time is right.
if you had capri figs that didnt contain wasps then theoretically
you could hand pollinate with a little trouble.

since you dont have capri figs then your unpollinated small fruits should drop off.

well this is my personal experience,
several seasons ago someone told me about their grandparents large fig tree
which was going to be torn out because the block was going to be developed,
the growing season had already started but i told him to get me some cuttings
before the tree was destroyed.
after carryng the cuttings around  with him for about 2 weeks he finally
got them to me.
thet did not have fruit but he had left all the leaves on,  well the weather
was hot and all the leaves were crispy dry.
he had them in an open bag with no moisture so rotting wasnt a problem
i removed all the leaves and treated the cuttings just like any other and they
rooted and fruited quickly.

wasps do not lay eggs in common figs because it
has flesh that is or will become wet. they need a dry enviroment.
also wasps do not fly far from there capri fig stand, only about 150 feet,
so if you have capri figs with no wasps you will not get them unless
you introduce fruit with wasps.

Subject: --- round vs. square? Replies: 25

yes what  rcantor said, biggest volume you can handle, round, square doesnt matter because
itll only be 1 /  -- 1  1/2 seasons in a 1/2 44 gal drum an the pot will be full of roots anyway.

i have tried grafting my figs a couple of times now with no success.
would you be able to tell me when you grafted your figs,
ie.  just before spring starts,,  middle of spring,, or some other time.
was the sap flowing  on the rootstock and the scion dormant?
thanks.

you only need a few buds on the scion so cutting it shorter will be a benifit.
remove all leaves and make a fresh cut on the scion a bit above the break
and you will have matching diameters for grafting.
as for pollination unless you have tiny pollinating insects (usually a little beatle)
you will have to hand polinate.
we do not have pollinating insects over here.

hi c/farmer
cherimoyas definatetly do not strick from cuttings.
why two trees in one hole?  i would dig up the broken one
and replant it,
your best bet would be to use a standard whip and tounge, which is very
succesful on cherimoya , and graft it back on the rootstock.
im going to graft about 30 of them soon.

we must be on the same wave lenghth,
im in the process of doing the same thing,
have just scored about 200 free 25ltr /  6.5 gal pots
and am going to line them all up in rows close together
and grow them straight up with minimal side branching.
im just going to use normal potting mix on a drip.

can you tell me more or have pictures of your
valve that is going to open after sitting for a few minutes.

ok t bud and chip bud starting in summer.
i have seen many videos on how to graft but none mention
a specific time of year to perform a std whip and tongue graft.

normally you would do stone fruit in winter during full dormancy

cherimoya and white sapote into spring when strong growth and sap has started flowing

figs ??????
