By total chance I happened across a page from the University of Hawaii Ag Service and they are selling papaya seeds for $1.00 a pkt, postage included!  (They actually list a strange variety of other things that might be of interest, but - sorry - no figs.)  I have not ordered from them (and don't plan to) but I thought some folks here might be interested in looking into this:

(Note the GMO varieties that are more expensive cannot be shipped off the islands).

Just loosen the root ball a bit and keep it well watered and put a bit of shading over the plant while it gets established.  Good luck and let us know how they do!

Yes, good luck and patience!  I lost a bunch of young one-year old figs that I tried to winter outside a bit South of you, despite covering them in a trench with a thick layer of dried leaves for insulation.  I had a few promising looking buds when I dug them out about 2 weeks ago, but everything then went to mush.  I hope you have better luck with your Kadota!

Do you worry about those hi temp spikes on sunny days?  I wonder if those would be tough on the plants.

I put my rooting chamber on top of some fluorescent lights that I am using to start seedlings and the waste heat from the ballast keeps them nice and warm.  (It is 14 hr on / 10 hr off but otherwise that seems to work well for me.)

Probably couldn't recognize a fig tree "in the wild".
