I also have an unknown variety that I keep in the house to keep it safe. No figs ever even though the parent tree had outstanding figs in CA. I did propagate it. It is tiny and the tiny baby grew 3fwetup or more in the ground...figure I lost that too. Any idea why no figs there?

I have a Deseet King I bought years ago and managed to keep it alive, till this Winter I am afraid. The "winter vortex" may have gotten it. It was loaded with figs, not very tasty figs, last spring. Second crop didn't ripen. I should have propitiated it but didn't. It is potted under my south facing deck on cement slab house sits on. Very sheltered but crazy cold for long time this year.
Any ideas as why not bety tasty?

Jdsfrance, now that is helpful. I hadn't thought of that! The tree is $8 and the catalog has several plants I want reasonably priced. They have weeping willow for $1.50, red painted daisy, and mosquito shoo geranium to help around the house...worth a try.
They do admit that their cold hardy banana is ornamental .... they claim the fig "ripens in July and is very sweet, delicious, good sized, firm and meaty. Often bear the first year."here no variety stated just (ficus)

This is a topic I would like to resurrect. I love the idea of companion planting and read somewhere that figs like mint. I planted chocolate mint in one pot to see how it went. Both fig and mint looked till cold set in. I am wondering about my topset onions, any ideas?

Old topic but I use what comes out of my horse barn, mostly sawdust and horse waste. I use this for everything with good results. Tomatoes and squash need tums for calcium or I get blossom end rot. I guess figs may need tums too. Not sure what else, any ideas?

Bartley,
we are down to 11 horses and around March another three will go to their new homes. Mostly buckskins and palomino here, used for fun trail rides and bird dog field trials. All but one can off of the same ranch in Colorado, just love the genetics she has.
Eboone,
I too am very interested in figs that can grow and produce in the ground in zone 6!

Bartley, I hope you do not mind if I piggy back your topic. I too am new to the f4f group. I too am reading and learning a lot.
I am in Missouri and have a couple of potted figs that mean a lot to me as they came from my father, unknown variety. Other than that I guess not much of interest about me. I have lots of questions but will continue reading before I ask as I am sure my answers are already here.

What a generous offer and a great group! So happy to have recently joined. I am already learning a lot. I am unable to PM from my phone so have to let this wonderful opportunity pass but it is still very nice of you.
