Subject: I've been missing the forum! Replies: 4

I've been gone from the forum for a while, but have really missed it. Life has been so hectic. I never thought that its almost June & I still have twigs in the fridge! Not happy to admit that one. I started some seeds for the garden, but with all the rain I think they will die soon. With surgeries and kids in school and overtime at work, I just haven't had any time which makes me really sad because gardening and figs calm my soul.

Anyways, I was able to get some cuttings going a few weeks ago. Since I have been sooo short on time, I just decided to put some peat moss & the white stuff in plastic shoe boxes & let them be. Almost everything has rooted that I put in! Wow, I hadn't expected that!

It has been flooded pretty bad in downtown Austin and the major flooding was in Wimberley. Really bad there. Everyone is pulling together looking for the missing and aiding in cleanup.

We have been in a drought for so many years and to have all this rain this month is too much. The ground is totally saturated and more is expected tonight. Personally I'm not used to green grass & mosquitos, but it is good for the area. Would be better if it was spread out, but I guess you can't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I was gifted a panache last year and interestingly enough, when the leaves came out this spring, it has variegated leaves along with the wood. I was looking at it today & thought I needed to fertilize but the realized it was my panache!

I'm pleased to report that mine survived the winter! I brought them inside the house and they are already leafing out. Very happy they're still alive since I had left them outside too long in winter :)

I totally missed whatever went on, but my mom always told me to "just ignore it". Sooo thats what I do. A lot. But it keeps me out of trouble. I know you can't always do that, but in most cases its possible. Anyways, I'm very thankful for everyone here and their experiences and knowledge. It definitely helps! That's all :)

I put a couple of cuttings in a tote with a bubbler in the bottom. And I would definitely recommend putting something on top to catch humidity because I had several that dried out on top even though the bottoms were fine. They had rooted but eventually died because of drying out. Just my two sense :)

I have had the same leary feeling buying any on ebay this season. To me it seemed like a lot of dishonest sellers. Granted, I have made a couple of purchases but only from F4F members who have been here a while. It is really sad. It seems the higher prices go the more dishonesty there is/will be.

Lol me too Aaron. I tried several times to try & catch something in the act of eating the bark. Checked them at all times of the day & night (up until midnight) and I never could see anything doing the damage.

No it was paraffin wax. But I had like a bazillion of those roly polys everywhere & all around my trees. Its just weird how the only part eaten was the waxed part. No other damage. And the ones that didn't have wax weren't eaten. I would definitely wax again because I truly believe that it helps though.

I waxed both ends of a lot of my cuttings this past year so they wouldn't dry out while rooting. Roots pushed through the wax fine as well as leaves.

The only problem I had was during the summer months something ate all the wax off the top of the cuttings into the bark. And it only happened to the waxed ones. I don't know what ate it, but I could also tell in our HOT Texas heat it looked as if it had melted off, and then was eaten past the bark. Just my experience though. I'm sure it doesn't happen to everyone.

Wow! Thats a darn good job! I had been trying your method & was able to get 3 out of 15 to root. Most molded but the 3 that rooted have really good roots. One cup is almost totally filled with roots in about a months time.

I took out the remaining cuttings, trashed some because they were too rotted and washed the mold off the rest. I put those into a homemade cloner. I figured since they were already moldy it's worth one last try to save them.

I have total faith in your process, I just think I'm doing something wrong. I somehow have too much moisture in there, hence the mold. I think I will try again later in winter.

Thank you all so much for the replies. I feel tons better about my plumeria now. I'm so relieved because I truly thought I had killed them when it got down below 40. Very thankful for for ya'lls knowledge also. It definitely taught me a lesson and now I will be more vigilant in caring for them :-)

I would say not to worry too much. You murdered no plumeria!  :-)

Thanks! I feel soooo much better now. I will definitely be keeping them inside now. Not that its cold anymore, but just to be safe.

On another note, I was wondering if it is legal to get cuttings from Hawaii. I saw some on ebay in the past, but never got them because I didn't know if it was legal or not.

How would you rate the Pops Purple Red? Does it have a lot of seed crunch? It looks like a pretty big fig compared to the RDB!

I just wanted to give a BIG thank you to a fellow forum member who I met yesterday! He gave me several fig trees and we had a very nice discussion. I don't know if he wants to remain anonymous, but just in case I will keep it that way. Thank you again! My kids were sooo excited they got everything ready to transfer them into bigger pots!

I have to say the generosity and willingness of MANY forum members is great! I am so very happy to learn from each and everyone of you. Thank you!
