Subject: Thanks Rafed and Doug! Replies: 12
Posted By: FiggieFive_0 Views: 755

I haven't posted much here the last few months, mostly because work and school, but also because of the antics of some members.  Sadly, the playground drama drove away some kind, knowledgeable, and very generous members.

Several former members in particular I would like to send an unabashed "Thank You!" Rafed and Doug (SCFigFanatic) are just two of those individuals.  They both offered to send me "a couple" of cuttings last year when I was first starting out; never had to ask for anything at all.  Rafed's fervor and passion for figs is just so palpable, and Doug is the epitome of "Southern Hospitality." Over the past year, both of them have sent me awesome cuttings, some rare and expensive varieties, and I've never had to ask at all!  Then yesterday a package came in (priority mail, of course), and...well, let me just say, I'm still going through the inventory.  Here's a sample: CDDN, Maltese Beauty, NDC, Noire de Barbentane, Genovese Nero, Blanche Alsace, just to name a few.

F4F lost some really good guys, and sometimes when I read through some of the postings, I really can't blame them.  Life's too short to be spending time with people who suck the happiness out of you.

White pitaya. Semi-sweet, semi-tart. Very refreshing and juicy.  Unfortunately, I don't know the variety type.  This was given to me from a classmate who got it from his mom's place.  THE BIGGEST I'VE EVER SEEN!  About the size of a baby's head.  And, of course, he says this was a smaller size one.

My DF are still young 'uns.

Aloha, Mike.  How long did you have to wait until your tree produced edible figs?  Needless to say, I'm beyond envious. Nice pics, by the way.  Mahalo.

Just like Armando, I use the sticky fly tape and the water cup.  Instead, I add apple cider vinegar in the water to attract the gnats.  And keep the cup away from your plants.  Dave started a thread with this stuff you can add to the soil called "Insect Frass"

Beautiful tree, Rafed!  How old was it before the die back?  Any chance of figs forming before it goes dormant?

Now that's the spirit, Rafed!  You got them keikis (children) looking nice and healthy.  If you keep air-layering at this rate, you'll have to move to a bigger house and yard or find more friends to give them away to.

Igor, I remember seeing someone use a rubber snake on their figs or in close proximity to them.  Cheap alternative.  If that doesn't work, a ghillie suit, a .22LR, and a lawn chair will do the trick.

I mean, we are talking about figs, right?

Search posts from Dennis (Snaglpus).  He's posted extensively on the use of cloners, and by the looks of it, has huge success.  I may have to try this method because of the fungus gnats around here.

Bob Between the Jolly Tiger, three Ice Crystals, a couple Genovese and several other plants waiting to go I could have made $1500 easy. That's not counting what a have sent in the last month or so. I get more satisfaction by helping my friends. I'm going to leave the earth the same way I came. Broke. But I might put a couple things on eBay just to offset my expenses.

Just proves the depth of your passion.  I know it's been said many times before from many other members, but man, I'm glad you're gonna be sticking around.

Aloha everyone. Please forgive me for the absence.  Everything's fine here on Oahu.  Barely even a breeze.  Well, most places.  Some gusts, but nothing too bad.

As for the Big Island, from what I hear from family living there, they're okay, too.  Just a bunch of broken branches, minimal-moderate flooding here and there, and spotty power outages.  But generally speaking, everything's hunky dory.

As a matter of fact, several memes have been posted regarding the "seriousness" of the storms here on Oahu...

Mahalo for all your best wishes. I've been busy securing all the loose yard items at our house and my parents house, taping up windows and stuff.  Me and my son went and harvested what we could at my parents (mango, avacado, soursop, sapote, and papayas) , but looks like the winds will blow some of the fruits right off.  I never thought that I'd be doing the "fig shuffle" ever, but then again, there's always a first, LOL! We'll let you know how everything turns out!

Gotta give it to you, Frank.  You're more cavalier than most of us.  I'm just gonna have to take your word for it and pass on the fig leaf stems.  Must just be a British/European thing, I guess.  Hmm, I wonder if the variety matters?

Aloha, James.  Just happened to me too, so I know how you feel.  Have you considered using a plastic water bottle-type protection?   Igor (Greenfig) mentioned it to me in a post.  Sounds promising.  You might want to give it a try.

Aloha and mahalo, fellow figgies.
Gary, I can't wait for the day where I can't pick enough ripe figs!  Until then, Igor's plastic bottle protectors may be the way to go if the organza bags fail to keep the critters at bay.  Otmani, I don't think I have that many fig plants to justify a PVC cage, but that's always an option.  Suzi, it's all good.  When nature sends you a lemon (hurricane),  grab the boards and head out to some surf ;) Igor, my friend, I'm just gonna have to take your word for it.  Maybe next time.  I like that idea of the water bottles though.  Doug, I wish I could fit 50 fig plants in my yard.  Then I'd be able to not stress over losing just one fig, LOL!

Thanks, guys. I've just ordered some organza bags from eBay.  We don't have tree-climbing mongoose (squirrels) here, so I think that may be the solution, and I don't think my dogs know what figs are yet, although I've seen them sniffing around them.  It's a good thing it won't be the last time the plant will give off some goodies.  Well, at least I hope so.  There's a hurricane a coming our way...

So after perusing the F4F forum, I got an inkling to check up on my plants, specifically my very first fig EVER.  It felt like someone just punched me in the gut when I saw my one, lone Conadria fig half-pecked by the birds.  I was waiting so patiently for this fig to ripen...Oh, well.  At least something got a taste of it.  Time to buy me a rubber snake, although these birds probably wouldn't know what a snake is.

Mahalo, Dennis for sharing this promising idea.  I've had a huge problem out here fighting fungus gnats.  No matter what I do, besides burying the cuttings whole, the darn buggers just have their way.  I do have one question though:  Do you initially root the cuttings THEN place them in the cloner or do you just stick the cuttings into the cloner before any roots appear?
