I'm in NJ, about 40 miles from the mother tree. Pretty much the same climate. Only difference is I have it in a pot.

Hi,
I lost 3 figs on my 3 yr old black/purple fig tree I propagated from my family in Brooklyn. The figs started ripening while they were still small. Any ideas what I can do? Last yr I had the same issue with a few figs. They basically turned into prunes for expanding in size. Pics attached. Thanks!

I see you are in Basking Ridge? Im originally from Union, not too far from you, but now I live in Plainfield Twp. In Northeastern PA.. Maybe 40-50 miles from Basking Ridge I'm guessing.. Would definitely love to do some trades, or buy some from ya, so keep me in mind when the time comes.. Ive got Strawberry Verte, Black Marseilles, Celeste, CH, VdB, and CddN (although the CddN is growing from cuttings right now themselves) So let me know :)

Yeah, border of Basking Ridge and Bedminster. I should have cuttings in the fall. Have to figure out how much I need to cut them back.

More then Sicily have in one year.

I am in NJ too. I have mine in a pot kind of under my garage soffit which shields the tree a bit from heavy rain.

I had it but discarded, for souring during rain.

Thanks for the ID. I've cut back on the watering once the figs started to swell.

After a long year and a half, I finally got to enjoy one of my family's white figs. I attached a couple of pictures of the leaf patterns as well as the white fig next to a Hardy Chicago along with both cut open. The white was just as delicious as I remember. Slight "fuzzy" outside, thicker skin than the HC and a watermelon/ slight strawberry taste.
Any guesses what it could be?

I also wanted to point out the growth habit of the figs on tree 2. They look to be attached with a much longer stem then my HC. Any guesses?

Finally got a couple of pics from the mother trees in Brooklyn.  Anyone want to give a shot identifying them?

Mother tree - White:

Mother tree red.  My cousin called this one red, although I thought it was purple:

Update on my cuttings: I messed up my labels over the winter and am not sure which is which at this point.  I believe trees 1 and 3 below are red/purple and tree 2 is white.  All 3 have grown to 4+ feet with many figs.  Pictures of my trees below. Please pardon the drooping leaves, they tend to do this during the afternoon.  They perk up at night.

Tree 1:

Tree 2 (I think this one is white)

Bonus pic, Hardy Chicago from Bills Figs on the left (bought last yr), with my 3 Brooklyn trees, 1-3, left to right.  The HC is loaded with figs, probably 45 or so.

Forgot to mention there's 4 or 5 figs on each tree. Highly doubt they would ripen or taste good since the cuttings are only from November, but still inspiring to see.

Thanks guys. Pino, I agree. My part of Brooklyn was filled with immigrants from Napoli. It's common practice for a cutting to pass from one neighbor to another. The resilience to cold is amazing on this breed. We always referred to them as white and dark. It would still be nice to tie it to an actual name. As the trees mature, they do resemble the typical Brooklyn Dark/White I have seen floating around this site. I am far from a trained eye though.

Anyone willing to take a guess at what type of trees these are? Maybe Brooklyn Dark and Brooklyn White?

Hi everyone.  Off topic from the original post, but I figured I'd post pics of the progress from the cuttings I rooted from my family's tree in Brooklyn.  How much of a difference 3 months and some sun makes!  Each of the them are now 2..5-3ft tall!
I know it is very hard to ID trees in general, let alone only only using leaf patterns without an actual fig, but is anyone willing to take a guess?  One produces white figs and the other 2 deep purple/almost black with a very sweet red/purple inside.  They have been passed through my family and I believe originated from Napoli at some point.

Expert opinion needed.  Is this the beginning of a fig on my 2yr old Chicago?
Thanks!

decided to up-pot the Hardy Chicago today.  Not as root bound as I thought it would have been.
Also included a bonus pic of 3 cuttings I've been working on from my families yard in Brooklyn, simply known as white and black!

Thanks. I think I'm going to keep it potted until at least next season. Now to find a decent 5-10 gallon pot. Or maybe make a trip back to Bills for one of his self watering pots.

Thanks everyone for the advise. The soil here is very rocky. Drains decent though. Btw Bill from Bill's figs in NJ is awesome. That's where I picked up my Chicago. His collection and knowledge is second to none!

Trunks are 1.5" thick. Thinking I might leave it in a pot this yr then possibly plant it next season. Should I up pot it in the meantime? 5 gallon?

Picked up a 2 yr old Hardy Chicago today. It's 3.5-4 ft tall with 2 main trunks, in a 3 gallon pot. Any advice? Should I plant it in ground or stick with pots? Border of zone 6a/6b

Thanks!

Came across this post while searching for Neapolitan figs. I lived in Williamsburg, right around the corner from the tree you originally posted (moved to nj a few yrs ago). Tons of fig trees in the back yards throughout the neighborhood. Sadly they are being torn down to make room for high rise condos now.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and great advice.  I will take a photo of the mother tree this summer when it comes back to life.

Hi everyone, new to the forums.  I am trying to propagate cuttings from my cousin in Brooklyn's tree.  The tree has been in my family for yrs.  I believe it came from Italy.  Can you help ID the cuttings?  Also any advice on how the cuttings look?  I started them around November, 2013.  I have them under a grow light for 6-8 hrs a day.
Thanks!
Anthony
