It was raining almost daily so I put some back in pots and others I mounded dirt up and planted them above the water level. The ground is very flat here so ditches are a must also. Most recovered and are doing well once they got established.

It could be that the hole they are planted in is staying full of water because the potiting soil is so pours. This happened to several of mine last spring.

Thank you Calvin. I suppose Ponte Tresa's are now worth only $7 so I guess I'll just give mine away.

IMG_1146.JPG These seedlings are grown from greenfig's seed. They need fertilize but till I get them reported I wouldn't be able to keep up with them. The seed germinate like weeds so be careful with them.

Nice looking fruit Fico. Never mind cuttings, could I just have one of the abandoned trees? Why are they abandoned? Are they from old homesteads that the people moved away from or is the fruit to common to be desired? Are the figs caprified? Sorry about 40 questions but inquiring minds

Whow Fico, those trees are huge. Do they produce good fruit? Any idea as to the variety? Do you think you could spare a cutting? Just kidding

Danny, I am no fig expert but I do grow a lot of verigated plants and I have found that the pale green stems do not do well and the solid green will take over. I would remove all of the green back to the first verigated leaf and remove some of the pale green stems. Some have tried to grow the pale green ones out but they fail due to a lack of chlorophyll.

Get some pure shells and wet them. They will not stay wet.

I used peanut hulls one time in a mix. I bought 35 yards of it and it was a huge mistake. When the wetting agent is gone you cannot wet it again. I can buy really good soil for $18 dollers per yard but it is bulk only. The delivery is the killer.

Subject: Wood Chips on potting soil. Replies: 9
Posted By: Hershell Views: 454

I use wood chips as mulch. The companies that trim under the power lines need a place to dump that is dry enough that they don't risk getting stuck so I allow them to dump on my property. It is a huge pile every 6 to 8 years and this is the year that they trim this area. You can see pictures over at Ourfigs.com. It is titled Flat to greenhouse.

Wood chips decompose rapidly and are usually not added to potting medium unless you are using cedar shavings and I understand they work well. Pine bark is usually used as the bulk in potting soil other than peat.

Why can't you use a pool for water storage? I'm sure it's not legal but eventually it will be released or evaporated. You could burry a cheap pool and build a cover over it.

That's a very nice comment! If anything move the post that are not on topic. Harvey has done a great job of keeping buyers informed. So why would anyone want this thread to fade away? Better yet, Harvey why don't you start a thread somewhere that it can be kept on topic and won't have the threat of being locked for no reason. And I know that this didn't come from Jon and appreciate that he hasn't done so.

I prefer the aluminet, it is cooler. 8 hours of sun is plenty and as you said we have an adequate supply in the south. 30 or 50 would be plenty. I don't use but it's just personal I guess. I learn to work in my houses in the mornings and evenings and don't look at the thermometers at mid day.

Usually greenhouses with shade are for foliage plants and creature comfoth. I don't know of a single farmer that has a shade on a vegetable transplant house. You can't do what a retail nursery does because they are just maintaining them. Most of ours are sold with 50 percent and my recomendation is that while it in a bag to hide it. I'm just a contractor.

I was using it on citrus. I have found that they Claus together fast really fast so I figured it would work. Was I ever wrong, I never did get one to live very long. I have met other people that had them and none had success. I do wish y'all luck. In theory it looks really good.
Bob. You probably could sharpen the blade with a round file but it would be difficult. And it is pretty sharp to start with.

Honestly. I have no fig grafting experience. We do mostly whip and toung. 100 percent, I can't compete with that. An average is about 75 percent but I'm doing several per minute. Some varietys are much better and vice versa. Some years are better. Two years ago the farm average was 30 percent. No clue why other than cold and overcast for weeks. We only get paid in full for the ones that live but you still have to keep up the volume.

In my openion the omega bruses the cambium and keeps it from bonding. Most grafters use a sharp knife. Mine will shave but some just use a box cutter but we try not to damage the cambium. In 4 flap the bark is pulled back but mot smashed. I would be willing to help anyone in any way but it it easer when you can work together. I should have made a video. Bobby, I will PM you tonight

I've had one for years. Did hundreds of grafts. Worthless, they don't take or break at graft. Someone can have mine for shipping.
