I had a similar problem also.  Put the tree in the ground potted and it looked like it made it through the winter.  But when green buds started forming at the tips, they all feel off except one. One branch died.  I took it out of the ground and put it in the sun.  A small fig started to form on the good branch. A couple of weeks later I think I see little green buds forming on about half the branches.  Just have to wait and see what nature wants to happen.

I just learned the whip and tongue method last night. Very easy to do. They had a grafting tool there also and tried that also. The whip and tongue was a much stronger graft IMO. Save your money and get a knife for 10 to 15 dollars. But what the hay, I'm just a newbie.

My money is on the fig. I lost 3 cuttings this year because of rot. One had about 3 nodes at the top that where still green. Cut it off and put it some moss and 3 weeks latter roots. Mine wasn't even the size of a pencil and made it. Bet on the fig.

Yeah. That was some root graft. Almost a root stock graft or was it a root stock graft? Very interesting.

Try the Whip and Tongue method. It's a really simple and strong graft.

I have used root stock to graft apples and pears but never a fig.  It should work. Good luck.

Hi Rafael, No I did not notice any change as yet. Just did the change of soil and move a week ago. Patience is the key. Mine have been rooting for 5 weeks now and one I can see roots, 3 other have roots and they all have green growth even the two single nodes. Good luck and go slow.

Hi rafaelissimmo, I am a newbie at this also but I think you might be watering to much. I made that same mistake and two starts rotted completely and a third rotted about a 1/2 inch before the roots started. I went to a big box store and bought a moister meter and only water when it reads a 3. I made another mistake of not pushing the meter to the bottom of the cup and  pushed the meter to the bottom of the cup and it read an 8. Way to wet. I think I have about the same setup you have, except I am rooting in a fish tank now. Hope this helped.

Troyb, thanks for starting this subject. I went and changed my rooting chamber to a 4 foot fish tank today. A lot of my starts where getting over 10 inches and had to go to a taller tub. I then checked for moister content and on all it was way to hi. Mixed up a 70/30 rooting mix of perlite to potting soil. I lost 3 starts due to rot. 3 starts had the beginning of roots and 3 just green leafage. Hope this will save the cuttings. Good lesson learned hear for the newbie. The fish tank will let me start about 10 new ones. Also have two single node with green shoots.

Right now room is not the issue. Like Richard suggested, I found a fish tank that is about 3 foot long. I have to make a lid and bottom for it and I will have at  least double the room. Now go out and find the plastic for the top, 1x2 and screening for the bottom, nails and glue and presto we have a new habitat. Thanks for all the help. I dislike ending up with dead sticks. Forgot to mention I found a 20 foot tree in Olympia that I have to go get some cutting from. I might have a few to pass around if any body wants. Don't know what type of tree it is. Just big and growing in the ground in WA.

A bio-dome is my name for a humidity chamber. It is one that fits on a seed heating pad and is about 10 inches tall. I went out and found a clear plastic tub that is 13 inches tall and will use that soon. Plant growth is almost to the top of the 10 inch box. The bigger box is also wider so I will be able to add some new starts. Only about twenty more to go and I'll be done this year.

When should I move the rooted fig to a 1 gal pot? Should I wait until the whole cup is full of roots or up pot now with 2 or 3 small roots? They are in 16 oz clear cups, drilled drain holes and fill with potting soil and perlite 50/50 ratio.

Ok   I don't feel so bad now. Being a newbie I thought one crisper bin was out of control and I ran out of room to start more cuttings. It looks like this is a common practice in the fig world. I still have to go and raid another tree I found in Olympia. I only have one bin compared to a hole fridge. Happy rooting everyone.

Welcome Heather, I am new to this also but you might have a panache fig. You can go check out the variety section on the home page. I would leave your tree alone and let it grow if you have the room. And yes you can use the cuttings to root a new fig tree. That's what I did. The first two ended up as dead sticks but third times a charm. If this brown thumb can do it , I am sure you can to. Good luck in your rooting.

Thanks for the tip on waiting longer. The roots where turning a yellow-green and I thought that was bad. Then I saw a picture of a start and the cup was full of yellow-green roots. Leson learned Thank you. And yes Charlie an air layer in the spring. More questions to come then.

It got potted. I premoisten the mix and put it in a clear cup with drains so I can see the root growth. I am sure it would have ended up as dead stick number 3 without all the advice. Thanks again for all the help. Pictures to follow if the roots show up.

Thanks all for the advice. Just the completely differrent from what I would have done. I have some organic mix called gardner and bloom. This potting soil is very loose compared to MG. Mix that 50/50 with perlite and water when dry. Trying to keep cost down and at the same time keep the tree alive. I think I am seing alittle green popping out of the brown thumb. Thanks again for all the advice.

Right now it is in spangum moss. The longest 2 roots are maybe 1 inch. I was going to use MG potting mix with coir or perlite to pot it in.

I did it finally did it. ROOTS on my negonne green cutting. They are about an inch long now. When do I transplant into dirt mix. Do I wait until roots are seen in the cup or put into dirt now. If I wait, should I feed it with liquid MG or just keep giving it warter.

Thanks all for your avice. Today I went and weeded a sport in the flower bed in the font to put the trees. I went to get the Olymipian and the big fig was gone. I mean gone, nothing left. Not a hint of what took my first fig. I was heart broken but the flower bed got weeded and there is a spot for the Olympian and DK. I will plant in pots and find a home for them in the spring. Thanks again for the advice.

I just walked out side and looked at my baby olympian and one of the figs started to droop. a closer lok I saw it had inlagered, started to turn purple and the one leaf was turning yellow. Will a small plastic covering help ripen the figs or am I to late to do anything? Being a newbie I thiught I would have to wait till next year for some figs. Seeing this got me excited for a Sunday.

I started this about 10 days ago. The tree I got the cutting from is in front of a produce store. They said I could have a cutting but no figs. I didn't want to be greedy so I just took one. I can go back for more if needed. But don't have the room for more my other half says. I am just a newbie and have a DK and an olympian. Didn't even know if I would like a fig. The guy that gave me the DK gave me some fresh figs. Well, I think I am a figaholic now.

A friend told me to get a negrone. They grow good in pots. I found a 25 year old tree and took a green cutting. Put it in a cup of water with a one liter soda bottle over it. I am starting to see white bumps, maybe roots? When should I add something solid like dirt? Hate to kill this one. I ended up with a dead stick back in Feburay.

Hi Aaron, Non profits are easy to set up. First check with the state and see what they need. Then deal with the IRS. This can take up to 6 months or more. I live in Washington state and have helped set up a few non profits. A lot of clubs are non profit, so go to the state and get their paper work and change to your needs. Worked great for me.

Good luck Rick

Hi all, I got bit by the fig bug last year when a friend gave me a dessert king. I was told to let it go dormant. I did and the top of the tree died and started to rot. I brought it inside and for 4 to 5 months it looked like I was trying to grow a dead stick. Now I have this. What fertilizer should use and should I clip the tops?
