If  so, take only one root shoot to a pot of size like 4 or 5 gallons. Protect that pot in the garage every year - you're in Zone6.
Next year, bury the pot in the dirt when the weather and the tree allow.
Did your tree die back to the ground this very last winter ?
Do you have a pic of the tree ?
I use the 80 liters /20 gallons trashcan method as a winter protection . Look for my post with pics on that method on the forum.

It is multi trunked from the soil line.
Yes, it did die back this past winter.
I do have a couple of potted figs. One from the same tree and one from a friend.
Dummy me brought them out too early and they froze. One of them (my friends) did come back but not as strong.(no figs)
Do I hear most people thinking the bury idea is a bad one?
I will snap a pic later today.
I love all the threads this time of year. so motivating.

I am doing my best to be patient but, my fig tree is not cooperating. :)
I moved a family passed along tree (no idea what it is but it was in Northern New Jersey and produce most every year). It was in a pretty shady spot for many years. It would grow to approx. 4-5 feet tall (4+ branches) and die back every year. Well, I got the fever to see if it would produce so I moved it to the the south side of the house with 90% sun. This is the second year in that spot and agin it has grown nicely but has not provided any figs.
So I'm thinking about trying the bury method this winter to see if I can help it get a jump start and not completely die back this year. Any additional thoughts would be so helpful.
Rick

Awesome Jeff!

So, let me rephrase my previous post.

Welcome Rick.  There's a good number of locals from the <strike>NJ, eastern PA and southern NY</strike> OHIO area on this forum, including some real experts.  You're in good hands here.
Jim

LOL Jim!
Thank you for the welcome

I do have a detached garage for the three I have potted. One of them is a cutting from my mom's. I am definitely going to try the pinch idea next summer.
BTW according to the USDA site I'm 6a (most of Ohio looks to be 6a)

It should get at least that in it's new spot (fingers crossed)

Hi all!
Just wanted to jump in and say hi.
My figness story started way back in grade school in the 70's. I grew up in Nutley NJ and I loved the beginning of the school year because I would walk home and aways look for a ripe fig in our back yard. After my mom passed away my dad eventually remarried and moved to south Jersey. Before he moved, he asked if I wanted anything from the house and I immediately answered, moms fig bush.
I planted it here at my house in Columbus thinking the zones were close enough. Well it never produced a fig :).
Last year (after 20 years of a beautiful fig bush that grew lager every year but produced zero figs) I decided (after many good friends locally had a great fig crop) that I wanted to relocate my moms fig to a better spot in the yard (more sun and closer to the house). When my friends heard about my renewed excitement they gave me cuttings from a their trees as well.
So I have my moms planted on the south side of the house with two others in pots near it.
It does not look like any will be producing any figs this year but I'm excited about next year.
In the mean time my plan is to be here and read, read, read. and enjoy your ripe fig pics :)
If you think of anything I should be doing with my moms fig to help jumpstart for figs next year, I'm all ears...and eyes.
Rick
Oh and I have no idea what kind of fig bush my moms is, all I remember was the figs were purple when ripe. Hopefully next year I will have some figs and be able to match them with the glossary.
