Subject: $7 fig trees for spring/summer delivery, around 150+ varieties Replies: 775

I have a few bucks in this and am hoping for the best.
I started with a very short variety list and kept it that way, never to be greedy.
I'm still in it for the long haul...
The one good thing that I personally will take from all this negativity is that
I know exactly who NOT to deal with in the future...

TEAM JAMES!!!

I use Elmer's glue just like Coop mentioned... You can do a thin layer or just lay it on thick...

3 DOWN, 3 still available...

I was thinking about it Conrad but I now in it's 2nd growing season in this spot, we had way more figs then we could eat so I will just keep it at one row...
I really let it grow wild this year since my parents were going to be in town and that meant other family also visiting so I wanted the extra figs but I learned a few things doing this...

1. Only a few horizontal branches (8-10)
2. Pinch sooner (7th or 8th leaf)
3. Longer periods between watering (had some splitting in late July)

This'll keep it cleaner looking and easier to manage...
And besides, I'll be getting extra figs next year from my other trees...

Hello you fig maniacs!!! My Black Jack was taking over my driveway and had to do a little fall pruning and have some cuttings to give away, just pay the shipping of $5...
Will have 6 packages of 4 cuttings each... Paypal is prefered, first 6 PM's get'em...
This little tree has become a beast of a grower for me...

It's pretty sad that this great idea has come to this, a few impatient or nosey people have torn it down. I'm in it for the long run.

KEEP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING JAMES!!! I appreciate the hard work you're doing...

Here's my idea for those who want a refund. Why not post what you ordered and I'm sure someone who likes your order will gladly give you what you paid, then a simple e-mail to James to rearrange the new shipping destination... Might be a long shot but I'm sure there are a lot of people who missed out and would love a shot at some nice trees...

Devisgro: Yes they are eaten raw, pick'em and eat'em just like figs...
Cheryl: Tamarind is a different fruit, very sweet and tart. It also grows like little pods but doesn't break open when ready. I'll post a pic of the tree and branches as soon as I get a chance...

Wow, ok you guys caught me. The bottom right pic isn't a fig, ha...

Sorry Calvin, I might not have a huge selection of fig varieties but the few I have are great because of the wasp I've learned...

Meg, this "variety" was brought here by my dad over 25 years ago as a young seedling. The tree now stands at well over 40 feet. I can tell you that seedlings are true to the mother true unlike our figs. The mother tree is still in my grandmother's coral in Jalisco, Mex, and it has to be well over 60 years old as my dad says it was huge already when he was a kid... I say "variety" only because I'm not sure they are categorized that way, my dad just knows white version and this red'ish version (red being sweeter). These are from his tree, I have my own in-ground and am working on an espalier. I't's on it's 2nd summer but no fruit yet, hopefully next year(fingers crossed).

Speedmaster, very fast growing!!! I have to trim it back almost every month to keep the espalier shape I want... I'ts interesting that you know it and I my Filipino friends recognized it also, they say it's a bit different in color though. Makes me wonder where it originated from. They grow wild in hotter areas in Mexico...

Picked a couple UP yesterday, awesome flavor!!!
10 out of 10 in taste, lots of seed crunch with a cherry flavor to it, thin skinned... Was gifted a small rooted cutting last year from Igor (my fig sinsei, haha...) Thanks Igor!!
Most won't know about the guamuchil, maybe my south western neighbors in Texas, NM and AR. Pod type of fruit. It is lightly sweet with the consistency of raw cauliflower.

Let me know if you wanna trade an airlayer, I like having different strains of the same variety...
The taste definitely will get better, mine is on it's 2nd year in ground and it's a winner. It's my wife's favorite. I gave away a few babies to relatives...

Completely forgot to mention the skin. Mine are not tough at all and very thin skinned... As far as growth goes, they are slower but I'm positive it's because I keep them in pots. There's no comparing growth of my 2 year old potted figs to my only 2 year old in-ground fig.

I have 2 different strains of Kadota and they are different in taste. Being that I bought them from a big box store, one could be a mis-label. One is typical of what I hear from east coast people, small to medium with an amber color and a sugary taste but my other is a deep red interior color with a very berry taste, both have different leaf patterns also. I would never get rid of them cause any extra fig is a plus in my book... If you have the space and what you pay for it wouldn't bother you, I'd say get it...

One more thing, I get brebas around this time and main crop in late aug and on, not sure if they'd be great for your area...

If you're planning to keep it in a pot I'd put it in a SWP already, you'll be surprised at how much figs love them... I had the same issue as you and as soon as I transplanted it it took off!!! Same case with the others I put in SWP's...
Don't cut off any limbs, one will most likely take off and leave the other in its dust, haha... Then you can practice airlayering the smaller one...

Most of us keep our smaller trees in black pots, if you don't cover the sides up to reflect sunlight they get pretty hot... I'd say putting them in the ground would benefit. I don't care how dry the top soil is, you dig down a foot or 2 and it's cooler than the other side of your pillow... I'm about to transplant a couple into the ground...

Definitely rubbing damage caused by its own leaves, just callused skin... No biggie, still edible just doesn't look appealing...

The fill tube should definitely go into the empty spaces, putting it into the soil reservoirs would clog it up pretty quick... Since I'm still pretty new to this hobby I don't have any trees big enough to fill a huge pot like Bill's so I started small with 4gal buckets to practice... SWP's do make a difference I've noticed... Thought I had a better pic, you can see a couple here, not the prettiest things but very functional... Hopefully in a couple years these could be moved into something the size of Bill's pots...

I know that most everyone's rule of thumb is that the first year of a rooted cutting's figs will probably be bland or to even pinch off first year fruit to concentrate on the root ball and maybe won't be good till the 3rd or 4th year...
What about figs from a graft???
Say the root stock was on its 3rd year, strong enough to give that graft a good push... Should those figs not really be judged until its 3rd-4th year???

I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Thanks Francisco, you always bring the good info. I have a Marabout (thanks to Igor) and have also noticed a wasp on a figlet and just moved it closer to the others. There are a few fig trees in the neighborhood but not sure if any could be a caprifig but I'm guessing so...
Igor, I spent a few mins clearing some spider webs yesterday. Seems like they just came out of nowhere fast!!!

Being new to the fig world I never really knew what the fig wasp looked like, only in pics, or I just didn't realize your tiny they really are... I had my very first wasp sighting on my own figs today!!! The wife and I were so excited and it actually caught me off guard at how much she was excited about it, especially seeing them on her favorite variety, Black Jack... So looking forward to some sweet ripe figs... We spent way too much time watching them, haha...

Question: When a wasp enters one fig does it mean that only that one fig gets caprified???

JDS... I lost a graft because of the moisture that got trapped with the grafting wrap I used, it was a wedge graft where the root stock I used was a little wider than the scion and the extra space seemed to work against it. Not sure if I had anything to do with that when watering though...
For now I'l just keep it where it is till I feel it's a bit stronger, maybe a couple months then bring it out slowly...

@Ben, it's an LSU Purple I received from JoAnn in a trade, THANKS JOANN!!! I grafted it to an unknown green/red I rooted last year. I'm at about 25% success rate on grafts but it's still too early to tell. This LSU and one other VdB have taken fast and have good signs of growth.
I've lost a few cuttings in the past due to bringing them out too soon and not being able to handle the sun, don't wanna do the same with these grafts.

First year trying to graft and my question is, once it seems to have taken, when is it safe to bring out to full sun???
I grafted this little guy on 3/4/16, seems to be happy so far. It has been outdoors and in the shade for about a month now, took it out once it started to break out.

Most big box stores carry varieties suitable for your zone so it should do well... If anything you can always use it for grafting later on if you're not happy with it... I have 2 Kadotas that I bought at different stores and they are different in taste, both good though, they do well in my area is the point...

If you have the room for them, wouldn't hurt. Personally I wish I read more about TC's before buying them, not the fastest growers or producers. This'll be my second summer with mine, 7 total and only one produced any figs last year (Olympian) but nothing to write home about.

Comparing them to my rooted cuttings that aren't that much younger, rooted cuttings look healthier. And I know I'll get figs from those, I've heard some TC's might take a couple years to produce.
