Thank you very much for the suggestions and ideas.

There has been no weed spray on the hill where the figs are and I do not think there is a way that there could have been drift from a neighbor.  Although, I suppose anything possible.  It is always possible that the mulch company sprayed herbicide on the mulch, but I have no idea

I pulled the mulch back today from around the trees.  Soil is still quite moist and it hasnt rained in 10 days.  I am inclined to believe it might be a water issue if that is possible, but I think I definitely need to look at the roots before I lose more.

The one in the middle photo that got 85% girdled in starting to get  black spots on the trunk where the bark is gone.

-Hershell what did you do to deal with the water problem?

-Sobelri it is gorilla hair (shredded redwood bark).

-Figgary I have never seen a gopher in our yard or gopher holes.  We have lived here 10 years.

So far the weather has been pretty good.  I dont think we have had any frost.  I have a number in pots as well that are looking healthy.

I planted 5 fig trees in the ground around November of last year.  They all came out of hibernation looking pretty good.  Now the Deanna has wilted severely and the others are looking a bit  unhappy.  Something girdled the VdB so I am not so surprised about that one looking bad, but I am not sure about the others.

Is the mulch the problem, clay soil, insect, too much water (mostly rain), etc?  I plan on pulling the mulch back from the trunks a bit tomorrow.  Below are photos of trees going from the healthiest to sickest.  Thanks for looking.

It is tough limiting my wish list to 6 at this point.  So many great looking figs out there....many more than I have time to research.  I have a small but healthy RdB air layer in a small pot that I can trade.  I am not sure what I'll be trimming back with the exception of maybe the VdB, RdB, and Celestial.

1. Galicia Negra
2. Martinenca Rimada
3. Longue D'Aout (Promised)
4. MBVS
5. Figo Preto
6. Smith

The RdB airlayer has now been gifted to another member

I have had 3 or 4 RdB off my new tree.  It was very good, but I just had my first VdB yesterday and it was awesome.  I love the strong berry flavor...almost tasted like raspberry jam.  Unfortunately, my BM is not doing to well so hopefully I will get to taste it next year.  Your trees look great

I am definitely not a expert like John is, but as I read through the thread I thought "hey that looks kind of like my Celestial". It is the one on the left.

Well I picked the fig in original photo yesterday and its brother today along with a RdB.  Celestial was fantastic and RdB was pretty good in comparison.  The first photo is from a couple days ago.  Today it was really drooping a lot.

This is the first fig close to ripening on my Celestial.  I am a little surprised by the color as it seems pretty light.  I am wondering if this looks like the right color for this variety.  Either way I am looking forward to my first taste of this fig.  Now if I can just be patient enough to let it ripen properly.

It looks like Don was right, the neem was to blame.  I haven't sprayed with neem since and there hasn't been any spread of the spots.  Also new leaves that emerged after I sprayed are fine.

Thanks for the idea Jon. It showed up initially right after the heavy rain last week in San Diego.  It has since then gotten worse.  I sprayed them with neem and it certainly didnt help.  I am wondering if it made it worse. All pots are showing wet or close to wet on my moisture meter.

I have this same pattern of brown spotting a most of my fig trees right now effecting approximately 1/2 the leaves.  I have sprayed the leaves with neem, but that is about it.

Just wondering what it is and if I should be worried. 20150726_105535.jpg  20150726_105524.jpg  20150726_105329.jpg  20150726_105315.jpg

Thanks for the replies. I don't have magnifier at the moment to look for mites, but I will see what Amazon has. I tested the soil PH and I am at about 7 right now.  I will get it some iron/desolved epsom salt and see if they green up a bit.

I purchased 4 trees from this e-bay seller which arrived yesterday. I would highly recommend this seller for these four reasons:

First, the trees are a very nice size and all but one came through shipping with flying colors (we will see if the wilted one makes a recovery, but we will work it out if it doesnt). The other three look very healthy.

Second, due to bad timing on my part the plants would have arrived while I was on vacation. He agreed to hold the plants for almost 2 weeks until I would be back for delivery.

Third, great communication throughout.  Literally every question was answered within minutes.

Fourth, as other have said here the packaging was great...it took a little while to unpack my four plants, but he did provide detailed unpacking instructions.  I read a detailed description on the packing in a another post so I will save you the details.

Oh one last thing...I asked for the sources on the plants I was buying.  He gave them right away.  I then checked with one of the sources who is active on this forum. They confirmed that Plant-Creator had purchased this variety from them.

James,

Thanks for the idea of painting them to make them last longer.  The plastic feels a little flimsy on the ones at HD.  Is that how the ones at Walmart feel too?

I saw these Newbury brand self irrigating planters at Home Depot today. Has anyone tried these for figs.  The plastic seems a bit flimsy, but they are fairly inexpensive.  You can not see tf from the photos but there is a opening at the top of the bottom tray part to add water.

I have done some research on this Avocado, but I have not direct experience.  Supposedly it is higher yield than Hass with a larger fruit when young . Fruit quality is similar and the tree is more compact.  It looks like a great way to extend your Avocado production.

I have had a difficult time finding it locally.  It is currently out of stock at Four Winds, but they have carried it in the past.

I have found this discussion to be an eye opener.  Just so much good info about this variety. It sounds like BM stands up to the hype.  I am looking forward to trying one. I'll have to start saving my lunch money. Also, thanks for the heads-up regarding the Black fig from Madeira being marketed as Black Madeira.  That would be a hug disappointment.

Dennis,

Thanks for the detailed info and sharing your experience.  It was a great read for me being new to this hobby.

I am currently holding at 9 trees as I will be doing a major landscape project in the next 6 months.  This landscape project compounded with my wife already thinking I have a screw loose for getting 9 trees will keep me in check for a while.  Black Madeira is definitely on the wish list and the grafted ones that Harvey sells look like a great tree overcoming some of the problem with Black Madeira.  Has anyone seen a TC Black Madeira and does TC really get rid of FMV?

Unfortunately I am in California which is on the "no fly list" for many of these online nurseries including JF&E.

Some of those prices are pretty amazing, but I guess it is all about supply and demand.  I am sure that for many of these growers it doesnt even scratch the surface for the considerable investments they have made in this hobby.  I guess Italian 258 is off my list personal seeking list lol

I have read about Black Madeira many time on this forum with references to its slow growing/difficult to root nature and delicious flavor.  All are characteristics which I assume make it even more desirable in pot.  I am sure with UC Davis no longer sending cuttings to gardeners this makes the market even hotter. So, I keep watching E-bay just to see how much these things are going for.  A grafted tree just sold for a princely sum (based on my meager self imposed fig allowance).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Madeira-Fig-Tree-GRAFTED-excellent-tasty-variety-/271882172316?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f4d70b79c

In this case $130 for a grafted plant. Congrats to Harvey by the way it looks you are selling some really great looking trees.  Another went a few days ago for almost the same price.  I personally wonder how high these can go...my guess is even higher.

Anyway what is the highest you have seen a potted fig or cutting go for and what variety? What is your personal arc of the covenant that you would go beyond your normal price limits to obtain?

Unfortunately my Panache is probably a year or two from fruiting. The fruit was on the one from Home Depot, but is wasnt striped so who knows what it was.  I can see some variegation on your branch.  I dont see any stripes on mine.  Hopefully mine will pop-up eventually.  I know that if they dont show I wont be the first person to buy one tree and get another.

Hmm interesting about the Panache.  I definitely didn't see any variegation and I looked close.   I purchased a very young Panache from Rolling River a few weeks and I see no variegation on the the trunk.  I wonder if there might have been a mix-up for them.

I have been spending a lot of time at the HD Garden Center lately.  Every trip I can't help but stop by and see what they have in the fig department.  I have been seeing some variety rotating through.  So far this season a various times I have seen Mission, Brown Turkey, Kadota, and Panache. I saw the Panache today for the first time. All the trees I have seen have had at least 5 or 6 figs growing.

A quick question on the Panache...when does the variegation start to show up on the fruit. I didnt see any variegation on the fruit at HD, but I was wondering if it was too immature.  I have read so many stories on the here about mismarked figs at the big box stores.  I was wondering if this could be another case.

What fig varieties are you seeing in your area?

Thanks for sharing the photos Gary. These are amazing trees.  There is an overgrown tree like this in a front yard a few blocks from me.  I have been tempted to go knock on the front door and ask about the tree, but the locked iron gate and broken down cars in the driveway have dissuaded me a bit.  I am looking forward to seeing more photos of Sonoma County figs.

Could be as that look like old wood.   Strange as the 5 or 6 trees I have seen from Dave Wilson were just a trunk with 1 or no side branches when dormant.

I posted a question few days about a question I had regarding the compact growth of my new VdB and Celestial. I received a lot of good info from the replies (as usual)

However, I was at my local nursery today and they had a VdB for sale from the same grower (Dave Wilson) and appeared to be about the same age as mine.  However, the growth looked quite different.  In fact the one at the nursery had already put on fruit while mine isn't even showing a figlet yet.

Just interesting to me to see even within the same variety there is some variability in the way these things grow. It also make me wonder how much my care if responsible for the difference in growth.  I guess this is a variation on the old nature vs nurture question...

My VdB

Does anyone have an additional thoughts on the cause for the difference? I know there will most likely be several opinions, but that is what makes this forum great!

Thanks for the feedback, it is helpful.  Being new to this hobby/affliction it is sometimes difficult to determine what falls within the normal range. I wish I had all those fig on my VdB like you do Simon.  Right now mine has no fruit forming but hopefully soon.

I am trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong with my trees or if there is just some variation among my trees due to age etc.  I dont want to start messing with something that is not broken or make a minor problem worse

I have two figs trees that I purchased earlier this year.  Both trees (VdB and Celestial) are from Dave Wilson.  Both of these fig trees have leaves growing very close together on stubby branches.  I have third fig tree (RdB) which I obtained through a member of the forums which has longer branches and what looks to me like more normal growth.

Here is the difference between the trees:

The "stubby" trees are planted in Promix HP while the healthier looking tree in planted in another less expensive potting soil from Home Depot (dont remember which one).  The two stubby trees are planted in 1/2 wiskey barrel style plastic pots and the RdB is planted in a taller pot that isnt quite as wide.

The RdB with the longer branches and more open growth is younger than the stubby trees

All three trees have received the same fertilizer (5-5-5 organic fertilizer and Espoma Garden Lime) and water.

The photo shows the VdB which has almost identical growth to the Celestial except the celestial has 5 or 6 figlets.  They both started leafing out the end of February
