My potted plants dropped their leaves at least two weeks before my in-ground trees. The cooler roots in the pots may have something to do with it.

The yellow bugs look like the ambrosia aphids that go after milkweed plants. They leave behind white old skins when they molt. You can also sometimes see sticky liquid on the leaves from the honeydew they give off.

I think it means the plant is a strong grower, and will continue to be as long as the conditions are kept the same, and no disease or virus shows up.

I use 72x48x18 shelving with LED bulbs both indoors in a spare room for delicate baby plants, and the same shelving in a 8x8x7' plastic and wood room in the back of my garage for less delicate plants. I was able to get the shelving for about 25 dollars less on ebay than at Lowes or H Depot. Sometimes you can get lucky and find shelving on craigslist.

I have three different potted trees that produced figs on a little tree. Florea, Black Bethlehem, and St Rita. All were 1 foot or less, with multiple branches.

I am waiting for the leaves to fall off, and the temps to get closer to 25f a couple of nights before I bring mine in. I will prune/shape the taller ones as I bring them in dormant. The pruning will be done to try to encourage a more balanced tree for next year, and so they will easily fit in and out of the cellar door. The cuttings will be saved for rooting or trading later. I am in zone 5 in central MA.

when the roots start turning brown like that, they are usually more sturdy, and able to handle going in a light soil mixture. I remember a forum member cutting off an air-layer when the roots were still white, and they broke right off when he started to manipulate the cutting.

Try a one inch layer of Vaseline on the main trunk, and re-do it if it gets washed off

IMG_0192.JPG  IMG_0197.JPG  IMG_0202.JPG  So my waiting is over, I finally picked a ripe fig other than Italian Honey. Both my wife and I responded with a mild berry taste, with a melon or kiwi undertone, and a little seed crunch. I am not ready to give anything a number yet, but I would say it was a little better than the I Honey..... But then my wife would beat me with a stray cutting, because that tree came from her father.

IMG_0185.JPG  So now I have to figure out how much waiting. When I read a lot of the posts on picked figs, most people seem to say I should have waited one more day. What's the best way to figure out that one more day? I know with my I. Honey I would wait until the color changed slightly, the figs would feel soft, and they would droop over and sometimes fall into my hand with a light touch. This is the first year I will have other figs that are ripe before October. My H Chicago has figs that are coloring up, one that is drooping, and even developing some tiny cracks, but it doesn't seem soft enough yet. My Macool is coloring up also, but not drooping yet. (buy the way, they are very similar in fruit and leaf to the H Chicago) Any thoughts? The Macool is the top photo. IMG_0190.JPG  IMG_0189.JPG

I live in zone 5, and even wrapped, some years they die pretty close to the ground. When people say your doing to much to protect the plants, do even more.

nice! I was real happy this June to finally see some stripes on the branches of mine. My first attempt at buying a panache tree ended with me having a Brunswick. This time I got cuttings from a forum member.

Last winter, I tried in a clear container with moist soil, in damp paper towels, and in moss. All of the methods worked. At least 70% success rate or more.

last summer was not a good 1 for fruit prodution, too many cool summer days. I work in worcester and see numerous trees that are wrapped with hay, burlap, and then plastic, and they seem to do well. So do the ones that are buried, but not many people have a bobcat to do all that digging

A lot of companies down south seem to carry the same plants. They come in small, but they are supposed to be tissue culture plants that are disease free

I have italian honey fig trees that seem to grow a lot slower than my chicago hardy trees. The soil and conditions are the same. Are they normally a slower growing variety?
