Nice video! Thanks for sharing! I'm curious as to what kind of garden soil you used in your mix along with the perlite and bark?

You could try heavily pruning them and then giving an aggressive fertilizer regimen for a season and see if it helps?

Thanks for the info everyone! I appreciate it! Do you mix the osmocote and Pelletized line into the compost or do you apply as a top dressing?

Is it just straight mushroom compost and lime or do you cut it with perlite or bark?

Since bill is using a 2 inch shallower pot did he change the height of his reservoir to compensate? So instead of 3.5" high pipe sections on the bottom did he he decrease the height to say 2.5 to 3 inches?

Oh wait! One more question! What are you using for planting soil? I was going to use MG Organic potting soil with moisture control. Do you think that will wick effectively? I noticed Bill didn't recommend MG. Thank you again!!!!!!!

Hello, I viewed Bills SIPS slide presentation on Figs4Fun. It seems pretty straightforward, but I'm left with a couple questions. 1) does water fill inside each 4" section of pipe at the bottom of the pot? If so, do you need to perforate the pieces of pipe so water can flow between them to fill all of them? 2) does it matter where in the pot you run your fill tube? I know it has to get to the bottom, but should it be inserted into one of the soil reservoirs or into one of the 4" pipe pieces? I'm not very handy so I'm just trying to understand as thoroughly as possible before I build it. Thank you for your help in understanding these details.

I ate my first fig if the year. I'm in Santa Maria, CA. The fig is behind my church. Can anyone tell the variety? It's an early fig. It ripened this breba despite a cool cloudy spring. The tree is loaded with main crop figs which are fairly decent size considering how early it is in the season. It was very sweet tasting. I'm thinking Osborne prolific or Olympian? Any thoughts?

Hello, are cedar or cypress bark fines a safe alternative to pine fines? I contacted the maker of earth gro decorative ground cover bark and they said it could be pine, fir, cedar, or cypress depending on where it's made.

Thanks!

Figs don't mind having confined roots. How long has the tree been in this particular pot? It seems happy and there is not excessive foliage for the roots to support. My opinion is to leave it alone this season and when it goes dormant you can root prune and repot or go to a larger size altogether.

Figs are very susceptible to nematode infestation. It may be best to grow them in pots of your soil is infected.

I've seen some good info on scoring/notching of trees to promote branching. I'm still a little unclear regarding timing. Can you score fig trees now even if they've put out leaves and still expect to initiate branching? Or does it need to be done during dormancy? Thanks!

So I just wonder if it's a let down once you finally bite into that special fig that you grew for yourself. Maybe it isn't. I've just been wondering about it.

Agreed. My wife and I spent a day in bodega bay, ca one time. It was foggy and cold and we were driving up the coast and stumbled on the area. We spent the day mountain biking along the cliffs and had a great time. To cap it off, we went to a little restaurant by the dock of the harbor and I had a bowl o cioppino that was to die for! I mean the best ever! I'm sure a lot of that perception was driven by the great day that I had with my wife, the fact that it was cold and foggy that day, the setting of the restaurant, etc. all those factors played into it. It was an experience that cannot be duplicated. You could have served me that EXACT bowl of cioppino to me at my kitchen table and it would not have been as impressive. I think a lot of that plays into these new found figs. They have meaning to the person who finds them but to a person who has no such reference point it's just another fig and the flavor and experience behind its discovery can never be duplicated. Do we love hearing the stories and seeing the photos? ABSOLUTELY! It's fun and exciting to share in the persons experience. And we want gnat for ourselves! (Myself included). So we want to grow the fig ourselves but it just can't be duplicated.

So I've read on the forum about the discovery of this fig and seen the amazing photos. My question is this: has anyone grown it here in the states from cuttings AND tasted the fruit grown here? Is it as amazing as it seems or is a lot of the incredibleness wrapped up in the story surrounding it? I'm just wondering if the opinions would be different if a friend just handed you one of these figs to eat without the amazing background story. Would it be considered as delicious? Thanks!

Thank you both. I've thought about peters honey in the past but I just don't think I have enough heat here on the central coast of California to ripen it properly. The Corky's honey delight caught my eye because it is from a coastal climate of San Diego that I thought would be similar to mine.

I was at a nursery yesterday and they were selling Corky's Honey Delight from Monrovia. I was tempted to get it based on the description but it was $60. I researched more about it and it seems very similar to white Genoa which I have. Does anyone know if Corky's honey delight is the same as white Genoa?

Last season I successfully rooted an ambitious air layer on a black mission tree. I left a large canopy and was concerned that the roots wouldn't support it. I potted it and there was some die-back but the bulk survived. I'm getting ready to repot it now and would like to plant it 6-8 inches deeper than it is now with the thinking that it will put out more roots from the buried trunk. Is this correct thinking or is there a danger to planting it this much deeper? Thanks for your help all?

In the Bellclare video he mentions removing the suckers? Why? If you don't mind a bush instead of a tree, will these suckers eventually bear fruit?

Thank you snaglpus. I was thinking of just using bagged potting soil like miracle gro or something along those lines. Would that have enough wicking?

One more quick question? How do you fertilize? Can you mix miracle grow with the water you are putting in the bottom? Do you need to periodically water from the top to flush the salts out of the soil?

Ok, thank you Rewton.  That answered my question.  I appreciate it.  That was my concern:  that the plant could be overwatered.

Thanks again,

Thank you dahlt.

So basically you seem to be saying that you keep water in the reservoir at all times and there is no risk of overwatering.  Correct?

So with these SIPs, how often do you water?  You are watering from the bottom so how do you gauge when to add more water?  When the soil is dry a couple inches from the top?  When the tree starts to wilt slightly?  I don't want to water log them by adding water too frequently.  Does anyone have a good way to tell when they need more water?

Thanks
Paul

Thanks Pino! If i leave the branches alone S you suggest, will it send out more branches on its own? I guess im concerned that the two branches will just grow longer and longer without further branching if I don't prune them.
