I received the U. Prosciutto last winter and it grew like crazy, and it even produced figs but I ran out of warm weather to ripen them. I expect to get figs this coming summer. I couldn't resist picking up a couple more varieties this winter but I am waiting to start them because I don't want them to out grow of there winter home.

They have one in Maine, the climate would be more comparable to ours then the one in CA. I have never been to it but it looks interesting.

I root my cutting in moist coconut coir - you can look it up in the forum. Just made sure to completely squeeze out all the water you can before placing them in a lidded container. Then vent the container daily for an hour. AVOID too much moister, the cuttings only need a humid environment to root, once rooted they can be placed in 50% promix and 50% perlite (pre-wet mixture before potting up- not saturated) in a humidity bin which has its lid cracked from the start.

I have heard about using cinnamon on roots of orchids which have fungus or to avoid fungal growth. I used it to save a moth orchid with root rot. Some people on the orchid forum believe that cinnamon inhibits/ slows root growth and will slow the overall growth of the plant. Never tried it on figs, I find that disinfecting them with 10% bleach solution is enough to reduce fungal/ bacterial growth.

Meg,
I would suggest disinfecting them in a 10% bleach solution before planting (this should stop most cross contamination). If there are any bugs they will die quickly in the bleach. Hope everything works out for you!

My figs don't smell like cat urine, must be your unique soil composition. The leaf smell is hard to describe, anyone who drives one home from the nursery can tell that the leaves are very fragrant. I did smell the deodorant and it wasn't off putting.

Hi,
I like to wait till they get very soft, and there is give then pressing the skin. I also look at the top of the fig by the stem, that needs to soften too. Also wrinkles are a good sign. It can take some time for them to ripen so be patient.  ;)

Congrats! If the plant isn't too large you could move it on a covered deck until the rain is over/ normally I wouldn't think of putting that much effort into but I have heard how much effort members put into their Black Maderia. Fingers crossed for you that it all works out.

Hi Everyone,

It's fig cutting season again, my favorite! I will cover shipping, and may have some VDB and EBT to trade. I am currently experimenting to find fig varieties I like and ones that are cold hardy. I currently looking to purchase land and plan on getting a green house so that should help with varieties that taste great but don't do well in my zone.

My top 6 figs on my wishlist are:
1.) Malta Black (sourced)
2.) CDD gris or blanc
3.) Longue D' Aout
4.) Petite Negra
5.) Sicilian Black JR
6.) Favorite cold hardy fig (love to try other members favorite)

Thanks Chuck, I will get back to you this fall! Glad to hear your air layers didn't dry out too fast. I think everyone had a dry/ hot summer, I am hoping we have an extended season this year because of it.

Have you tried pinching the terminal buds to encourage fig production? I pinch after 5 large leaves. Worked like a charm for me, but all varieties take different amounts of time to mature before producing fruit. Your can also try a fertilizer that promotes fruiting to help guide them in the right direction.

If your not attached to the water method, try throwing the hardy Chicago cuttings in some barely moist coconut coir. Just air out the container daily and wait for roots to appear. I have used the water method before but found coconut coir worked much better.

John: We had such a warm winter I was able to get it out of hibernation early! It produces a lot of figs, we will see if they all ripen before the cold :). Can't wait for a green house, this variety could really use a green house environment because of the long period of time it takes to ripen.

Hi Everyone,
I finally got my tree labeled Violetta for produce a fig, I am not quite sure its truly a violetta..... Its still a great fig I am just curious about what it could be (maybe Bayenfeige ?). The leaves are all tri-lobed and it ripens later then my VDB. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the comparison! Does the La Goccia d'Oro grow faster then Italian Honey? I don't know about everyone else's but my Italian Honey grows incredibly slow. The Atreano cuttings you gave me did amazingly. I cannot believe how fast they grow!

I started the cuttings in early November and it took awhile to get them rooted. I didn't wait because I didn't want the cuttings to lose energy.  I would say the roots were fully established/ moved into potting mix by January and I had them growing under my T5 for the duration of winter. I did notice some FMV early on which delayed growth but they grew out of it very quickly. I also fertilized them regularly with Neptune's harvest. I didn't expect to get any ripe figs off of it but its doing great for a first year tree. I found that the figs didn't' t take too long to ripen so fingers crossed that the warm weather holds out for your crop.

I got some more figs over the weekend! Its been very warm this summer and I think the figs are loving the heat. In the first picture I have a Dessert King and VDB. I really enjoyed the VDB and the tree is still young (only 3 years) so I am excited to see how the taste improves as the tree ages. In the second picture is Izbat an naj. I started the cutting over the winter so the tree isn't even a year old. The fig was very sweet with a mild essence of tropical fruit. I wasn't expecting much since it is so young but it really exceeded my expectations! When I up-pot it next season I am hoping it really takes off.

Turn the dough out onto a sheet of lightly floured wax paper and flatten into a square about 3/4-inch thick. Cut into 4 equal pieces and wrap each separately in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm, a minimum of 2 hours. Assemble the cookies: Preheat the oven to 375°F and position a rack in the center of the oven. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove one portion of the dough from the refrigerator and place it on a well floured sheet of wax paper. Dust the top of the dough with flour and top with another sheet of wax paper. Roll the dough out to a 1/8-inch thickness. You should end up with about a 10-11" square. Remove the top sheet of wax paper and trim dough into a square with a pastry wheel or sharp knife. Cut the square into fourths lengthwise and crosswise to get 16 squares. (Save your scraps for re-rolling.) Working as quickly as possible, place about 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of filling in center of each square. Pinch together two opposite corners in the center and fold that "point" over to one side and smooth down very gently. This helps to prevent the cookie from popping open as it bakes. Arrange cookies 1-1/2 inches apart on the parchment lined sheet. Bake until lightly golden, about 12 to 14 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet for about 1 minute, then carefully transfer to cooling racks. Repeat the process with the remaining 3 portions of dough, using different filling flavors if desired. Store between layers of waxed paper in a tightly closed container and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature (30 minutes out of the fridge), arrange on a plate and dust lightly with powdered sugar just before serving. It's not advisable to top them with powdered sugar before storing. Makes about 5 dozen

One good thing about the cold is it keeps all the nasty critters away! I don't have to worry about any of that. Growing up as a child I use to pick up snakes and spiders to scare my siblings :)
