looks very nice, by the fig shape and color I would say it's similar to Stella, but the leaf shape is no where near similar to that variety.

Neem oil could be effective as systemic but might not do the job as a spray, getting contact with them is difficult because they are so small and sheltered in the buds.

Ricky, you are correct that if the mites do not carry FMV they will cause no lasting symptoms after they are gone. If they do have FMV you might not see symptoms until one or 2 years later, the tree does not need to be weak, or underfertilized or anything like that. Some buds will have more virus than others and those will be the ones to show symptoms. When you prune a tree with FMV that is when you see it the most. Fig bud mites are so small you cannot even see details at 40x, just squirmy grub looking things.

Argentine ants are on some of my trees too this year, the damage they cause does make it harder to tell if a tree has virus symptoms.

are those the mites in the buds? I have something very similar right now, but when i look really close they appear to have wings. but I have a bunch inside the buds on my Stella. Neem didnt seem to do the trick for those guys.

Hey Ross,
not sure what parts of Philly your in, but they grow wild in the Pennypack Park in Northeast Philly near me. I was picking them last fall, and everyone was telling me I officially lost my mind when I was coming home with bundles of fruits from a park in Philadelphia. I have tons of seeds if you want more.

I don't see much of a problem with that, if pruned properly wouldn't that turn into this over time potentially? that's how I see UD Davis, and other large orchards doing them. guess it's more of a preference thing.  blackmadeiratree.JPG

try and get a little shade over them, not sure if you have access to shade netting like this http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/category/shade-material

if the leaves totally fried off, and it has a good root system, it could bounce back and push out new growth that wont need the shade, but they do need transitioning to outside full sun when rooting them inside.

correct me if I'm wrong, but that does look like a breba to me, I see a callused node without a leaf. did the leaf fall off after the fig formed?

I know exactly what you are getting at, the nutty, sweet, hard to describe smell of the tree/leaf itself. I actually do have a habit of smelling them during the growing season, it reminds me of my grandfathers back yard, it is very distinct.

I did notice that during new growth is when they put out the most aroma, and at the end of the season August/September it seems to tapper off. My Celeste, and Galicia Negra seemed to have the strongest of them. I also took note two weeks ago when I shuffled them into the garage from a frosty night the garage the next day carried that sent.

Thanks Bass, maybe I'll root the two and store the third. Just wasn't ready for them yet, when I received them they were wrapped in wet newspaper, so i don't know if they're reacting to being shipped. wishing they were hard wood at this point.

I just recently got these, I putt them in a freezer bag and threw them in the fridge, after a few hours I thought to myself, um those are mostly green ugh oh. Now my question is can I store these for a few months or should they be started ASAP?

thank you everyone!

I got cuttings from James, he is a very nice guy, likes to be involved with the process of the buyers growing them. definitely can guarantee his authenticity, which is the reason why he makes these humorous ebay listings.

I would have threw a clear bag over it for a few days to raise humidity in partial shade. I have received trees like that in similar stressed state and they bounced back after 3-5 days with the bag on it. messing with the root ball while the tree is already stressed probably will affect it more

thanks Pino, mine are getting soft and are turning yellow but they aren't dripping honey yet, so I figured a few more days. last night I was using the staple gun at 10:30pm to staple the bird netting securely around the pot, while leaving the figs double bagged with organza bags. I wont let the thieving squirrel win this one LOL

Hey Pino, I know this is old so sorry for posting, but I have my Stella now ripening for the past few weeks, I had two swell and droop so I covered them all with the little bags and tied the draw strings around the branches and squirrels ripped off the two leaving them hanging from the branch, unfortunately the squirrel did it way to soon and they were very dry and not very sweet. right now I have two more getting quite large so to addition of the bags I also put bird netting. now how soon do you usually take them after they start swelling? its easy to tell with a dark fig but this is a new ball game for me.

got this from a Lowes, the wholesale distributor is simpson nurseries, so I hear there is a lot of not correct labeling going on. small very sweet, had a good after taste that I cant really describe. what do you guys think didnt seem to get as dark as what I normally see? the tree had a bunch of fruit drop a few weeks ago after a strong heat wave, but got a few that hung on and are ripening up now.

the cutting looks a bit on the large side, seems like you could easily do a second with it if you cut it in half

also Phil yes all the figs are dark, none of them are actually a green/light fig, the inside is lighter than the other.

This is my first year with the tree as well. I purchased it from Mr. Bisirri directly in May, and I was told it was 3 years old. I have a light, and I got my mother a dark which I will eventually get around try to get a air layer from her.

when I spoke to them about their trees, the dark and light, they say there is no third available, but after searching this topic numerous times on the forum I see that there has been a few that slipped in since they keep friends tree's in the green house over the winter. I also noticed a 6 foot Panache growing in a pot not for sale so yes it seems easily possible for this to happen.

It is very productive, I have had three figs for myself the squirrels got a bunch and now I have 5 in bags ripening not to mention a bunch more still not ready to get the back treatment yet.

I didn't have any Breba on mine when I purchased it, and I did see the mother tree's and I didn't notice any on them either.

I use a white and a yellow, both work good when the squirrels don't take the whole bag I now tie the the string around the branch after I secure it around the fig seems to help.

I had the same issue with one of mine, i thought for sure all fruits would be bad, they are all currently ripening and as they ripen the spots disappear. and they taste perfectly good to me.

Subject: Self watering containers: too much water? Replies: 9

Of course the cover I see as a necessity to prevent the overfill as the hole can drain as fast as it allows so constant water flow from rain for multiple days the hole will likely have trouble expelling the extra water

Subject: Self watering containers: too much water? Replies: 9

I'm no expert by any means, but the way I look at it is, as the soil drys the soil wics up the water from the bottom just like one of those watering globes, the dampness of the soil naturally regulates the pull of moisture, although it's not gravity fed like a globe, it acts as a sponge. As an example a sponge sitting in a large puddle will only pull as much water as the sponge can possibly retain but can't physically pull in extra, with a SWP having the fill area below the soil and roots and having drainage makes sure the "sponge" wont be sitting in excess water above the water reservoir.

Herman do you prefer your trees in the ground opposed to pots? I am doing pots as of now because of fear of our winters, but everything I see in the ground gets so much larger faster.

I did find the location of the tree, I went to go by this morning to see if Giovanni was tending to his tree, to see if I could discuss things with him, and see if it were possible to acquire a cutting and unfortunately the tree has been cut back severely almost looks as if it started from the roots again either this year or the year before maybe. not even recognizable compared to the articles and pictures, I saw a few main trunks at most 4 feet tall.

well good thing is I had my first ripe fig of year. this is a main crop fig, taste was really good. I see there is a ton confusion over these figs of what's what. I think I have a dark, but it was sold to me a light. anyone from the Philadelphia area please chime in, to help me clarify what I actually have.

do you actually have a clone of his tree? I am local to him and have been thinking about seeing if I can get in touch with him about cuttings or if anyone has his clones available.
