I have no doubt James will deliver, the question is just when.  I do want to start growing specific varieties this spring, and if James believes Spring is not feasible, i would like to start pursuing contingency plans/sources. Right now, I am in a quandary. I know James is hard at work and a "schedule" update would be awesome.

i think mehetal means "one who tricks people" in arabic. i never heard of the word associated with a fig.

Is the fig dark red inside or dark red outside.? Hmari, khdari, sumacki, souadi, fayumi, so many arabic varieties that are dark red on the inside. I can go on and on.

If you're looking for a dark red exterior fig that originates from Egypt, maybe Bass is the only person who can answer that. Here is a post from the past from Bass

In your video, you agree with me that the figs are watery, no flavor, and bland, so by your comment above it appears you are pleased with it  based purely on size??

Maybe anyone with in-ground has different experiences that want to chime in....

my post above was for the breba crop and I stand by it. Maybe the best tasting fig I've had from all my varieties.
But the main crop was extremely disappointing... bland, watery, barely sweet, and not worth eating. A lot fell off the tree or succumbed to the figeater/june bettle. It was a second year plant and is a very aggressive and productive grower.

three options:

A, keep the plant only for the breba, which were amazing.

B. Try it in its 3rd year next summer, for maybe improvement in the main crop taste?

C. plant in ground to improve main crop taste

Any suggestions or similar experiences with Rob's GN main crop? Mine is in a pot and not in ground.

APHIS directly informed me that it is legal to ship "fig" cuttings or "fig" plants to CA only from CONUS. Of course, we know there are a lot of restrictions internationally. Since then, CONUS sellers have sent me dozens and dozens of "fig"cuttings/plants with not a single issue or discussion with postmaster or USDA

I have all four. Rmali is still under test as a first year plant Bass sent me last month.

However, the Verte, Hmari, and JHA ripened in that order for me this year. Los Angeles Coastal . Some say that Verte and Green Ischia are the same although i can't confirm

Hmari was excellent and maybe one of my wife's favorites

i wish i can be more descriptive. but like many, i am not good in describing taste. i know its not a honey. It is more of a berry fig.

here is a thread where Bass describes it, and mentions "honey" figuratively, but I am sure he would agree with me in not labeling it a honey fig.

In the same thread, Bass states "It does ooz honey at the eye, but depends what you refer to as a honey fig. To me honey fig are any figs that has a pulp like honey in color and taste. Usually usually yellow skin and yellow pulp. "

So, this by his account and my account, is not a honey fig

Mara, i am in socal, and have Bass' sumacki. excellent tasting fig. we tasted about 5 figs in first year pot. you can't really glean full taste off first year, but it is a keeper.

very good grower also. remember this fig is originally from the middle east climate, so it is anticipated to do better and taste better in southern California than Pennsylvania.

this is first i have heard of it being it related to Verte or this being a consensus. But it explains why i can't tell the difference between my JH Adriatic and Verte. They appear identical to me

i am growing many varieties, and undoubtedly the ones that meet all of your criteria is #1 Dark Portuguese (Bass), #2 Brooklyn White (Bass) and #2 (tie) Lebanese Red (Bass),

I am in SoCal zone 10 as well, and for flavor, versatility, productivity, consistency, disease and pest resistance, completely tight closed eye, no splitting due to excessive watering or humidity.

The ones above have been tried and tested, although i am still evaluating others as well. So far, those have earned places in the limited space/ ground we have.

yesterday, the lady over the phone told me they just got them Saturday morning.
not too popular among the crowd i was with. they were a little lonely, while the strawberry, blueberries, blackberries, peaches dominated the attention. 
only pet peeve, each pack of 20 i believe ($5.99 brown turkey strain), had about 1-3 dead ripe, about 7-10 that could have used another day or 2, and the rest inedible rock hard, threw it in garbage.
on a similar note, trader joes expecting theirs to arrive in a week to 2 weeks

simon, i do, a second year plant and its exploded this year. last year (in its first year from a local nursery) we got about 4 or 5 big BJs that look just like Dennis' pictures in this thread. identical. but, honestly, my wife was not interested in eating more than her first because it was so bland and watery. this thread gave me hope though, so looking forward to more later this summer.

thanks all for the latest replies. really appreciate it. i am still a novice on potted figs.  i watered once a week through my first ever growing year (last year) and thought it would work on the 2 year older plants this year. lessons learned -- not gonna happen.  i am watering daily now and i have mulched just today. i am planning to buy water trays/saucers/reservoirs this week as well.

jds, i already have flag stones under each planter individually, so no roots coming through to the ground. i do plan to replace those flag stones with trays/saucers/reservoirs.

Dan, thank you for the post. I used kelloggs organic fruit tree fertilizer , every 2 or so months.

Shailesh, Paul, figfanatic, Dan, Jon, thanks for taking the time to respond. i will take all your advice and start by "finding" the time to water more frequently. Maybe I can set up a drop system or wickering system to help with the resource limitations on my end. I now have a lot of my figs bare naked on the branches, fully undressed and vulnerable. i hope they will survive in the next month for me to sample? the main impacts were to my hmari (israel), sbayi (israel), rob's GN, and khadari (israel)

I posted earlier on my problem, still need advice please. see pictures below. i am devastated. 


Based on research on this forum, it can be one of a few issues:

A. too much water (i water once a week) in SoCAL south facing sun all day

B. too little water (i water once a week) in SoCAL south facing sun all day

C. root bound since its happening mostly to my 2 year old plans,not my younger plants

D plastic brown pots are heating the roots, need reflectors around pots or shadier area

E Need fertilizer. last fertilized in April.
