Also, speaking of propagating fig trees.  I have some smaller ones, all around three years old or so, and I was wondering about the best way to propagate them.  In particular, I have a petite negri that bore fruit for the first time this past summer, and I'd like to share it with someone. What is the best way to go about it?  It does not have any low growing branches nor any shoots that I could just dig up.  When is the best season and what would be the best method?

Thanks in advance.

I used coco coir mixed with perlite and compost, and it was a death sentence for all of my seedlings. I used whatever brand they sell at Gardeners.com.  I thought it was good because of how my fig trees responded to it, but when I mixed it into my garden bed and used it for seed starting mix, as many people recommend, it was awful.  Everything would either sprout weeks late and never grow another inch or it wouldn't sprout at all.  Some of it never sprouted until the following season.  Anyone else have a similar experience?  My fig tree didn't seem to mind it though.  Too bad I bought a whole box of coco bricks after how it worked for my fig tree.  I think I was a victim of that sodium issue.  Is there anything I can do to make the stuff usable?  I have a ton.

LJFiggy, Wow, thank you for the excellent response!  I truly appreciate your suggestions.  How did I forget about the old mainstay, borax?  Has anyone made use of diatomaceous earth for indoor plants?  Sometimes, I also get the occasional centipede :0.

Sarina, I had not thought about that, but I wonder if they wouldn't just make two trails, one going out for the cookie and one simultaneously for those going back to their lair with whatever they can carry on their backs from the cookie.
