Wow. Those look crispy. Is there any potential that something chemical got sprayed or spilt around them? Possible over fertilization?

I find diluted peroxide quite affective against rust. I respray every few weeks as needed. It's not a cure but it does slow it waaaaaay down :)

In the land of ticks and Lyme disease, opposums are always welcomed. In one season, one opposum can eat thousands of Lyme carrying, Rocky Mountain fever spreading nasty little buggers. They're literally tick vacuums. And with tick populations exploding everywhere it's something you think about when you're picking 20+ ticks off each dog after a 20min hike.....As much as I love my figs I'd happily share with an opposum or 2

Location plays a big role too. Along the woods where they feel more secure, they'll chomp just out of curiosity. Closer to the house and around "unnatural" objects, they're less likely to risk it. A foldup chair spooked them enough to stay away from a Japanese maple they found quite tasty a couple months back lol

Hey there. Sorry you're strugging with your figs. Your mix does look too water retentive?? Just wanted to let you know, from one Ontarioian to another, both neem oil and fish emulsion are available on Amazon.ca! Personnally I don't find neem works for spider mites, usually just scale, but fish emulsion works wonders! If you're diligent :) Good luck!!

Keeping in mind everyone has different experiences.....but for me, fabric pots werent the best. The fabric pots averaged about 5 degrees celcius cooler than plastic in the winter (not so good for cacao lol), and I found keeping them moist in summer was challenging. Also I HATED moving the larger ones cause I'd have to brace the pot against my hip cause of the weight, and it would soak my pants! Plus it seems like the roots get more disturbed when you move/drag them around then in plastic. But take this all with a grain of salt cause this is just one chicks experience in Canada :)

Ricky- check out Figs For Life. They're a BC fig supplier. I've purchased quite a few from them, all were excellent quality, and very well packed for shipping. No Granthams Royal or Florea but a nice selection :)

Bird pecked figs the bane of your existence?? Loosing tons of berries to those beautiful bast@rds? Well I just spent 22 bucks on something that looks promising :) Fingers crossed!! I'll add that I live in the country and don't have to worry about neighbors lol Amazon is now selling the Aircrow 1/2 hp for $62 and there's a $40 coupon!!! So if my grade 1 math is correct, that's $22 and the list price(which I do take with a grain of salt) is $339.99! Have absolutely no experience with the product but the reviews are high, so thought I'd spread the word :) Check it out, even if it's just for a laugh

A few years back I bought one it was 8x8 and grey (think was 150 bucks) I cut some holes and tuck taped (waaay better than duct tape) some greenhouse poly for windows, it was ok. Not great. A heavy rain would knock in the windows. I'm sure it could have been done better, but once you get cutting there's no going back lol This spring I found a 10x10 greenhouse on Amazon.com. It's called King Canopy, basically a glorified car port, greenhouse style. It was 175 bucks(in March) Seems much stronger than most greenhouses around that price point, and you don't have to worry about modifying the car port ones.

Pino- Bad news ;) after writing yesterday I kept thinking about those loney paws so I took some off their hands lol And I just planted 3 grafted ones from Grimo a couple weeks ago! Brings my grand total to 8, but I couldn't stand the thought of them going to the nursery compost pile....anyhoo good news is there's still 3 left if you're interested! They're at Stevensville Nursery, they were 39.99 but everything's 40% off. Next week it's 50% off, week after, 60%, you get the idea :)
Oh and at grimo they're 35 bucks for a grafted tree, 24 for a seeding

The nursery by my house had 6, 3' seedling trees in the spring at the beginning of the season. They still had all 6 when I was there yesterday :/ It's too bad, they were great looking trees, people just don't know how tasty they are!

Tin foil?!! I think that's a great idea! (please no one explain why it's not lol) I've lost count of trees I've had girdled by gnawing rodents :/ Its enough to drive one mad!! Even beavers stripping the bark on giant willows in my back yard! Though we finally managed to stop them with loosly wrapped chicken wire. So I am sold on this tin foil idea

Oh wow....yes sir. But I'm new here, so would like to at least offer some home grown organic tomato sauce if you're into that kind of thing? I consider it to be my best trade lol

Thanks guys! Ok these paws have a date with the dirt tomorrow!!

Snaglpus- nice list of cultivars!! Must be nice :) Ive wanted to grow paws for so long but there have been some set backs....mice, deer etc...You do your best to winter protect just to attract mice. Deer don't seem to want to eat them, but they have no problem just snapping small trees in half, I guess for fun? Oh well, this time is different I can tell!! Lol

Jamie- my sun protection isn't gonna look anywhere as nice as yours! Yours looks shade-tastic :) I won't be able to see mine from the house, so I'm going less esthetic and more....well whatever's lying around the garage lol So my thought was giant tomato cages (some home made 6 footers, thanks hubby:) wrapped with burlap or some kind of frost cloth. Then I'll mound soil up a bit for winter. I'm apprehensive of those plastic tree protectors as I've experienced bark damage with them. Be it from nawing rodents when they move in for a winter respit, or sometime it looks like the wind bashing them around damages the bark. Maybe that's why you shouldn't leave them on over winter?? I dunno

Hope this isn't bad forum etiquette to post about non figs?? Sorry if it is, I'm new here and a "trainee" so to speak lol
Because this is a fig forum let me start with...I LOVES ME SOME FIGS!! But I have a paw paw question, and with all the wise fruit tree growers here I thought'd this be the best place to ask :)
I just picked up 3 beautiful paw paws. Shannadoah, Susquehanna and NC 1. Bout 2' tall pencil thick. I'm in zone 6a. Is it too late to plant them?? I could happily overwinter them with the figs and plant them early spring but the mix they're in looks real heavy. Nothing I'd want a tree in, so I'm nervous about root rot when the soil gets cold. But on the other hand frost is around the corner (booooooo) so is there enough time for them to get settled inground?? These trees weren't cheap lol
Thanks :)

Thanks for recipe idea! Brie, figs, dark chocolate n salt sounds ammmmazing. Though it's a bit of a walk from the fig "orchard" to the house and those pesky figs have a way of disappearing before I get there. Must be a hole in my basket

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!! :)

rmulhero- you're lucky your bf is taking an interest! Mine still cant tell the figs from the citrus. Having said that, his hobby of mixing music is about a 1 on the excitement scale for me lol
pino-i'd say I'm noob-ish? Have had the HC for 5 years. I absolutely love it. Tastes great and always is loaded with figs. 4 years back I had purchased 3 other figs all labeled "red honey" but all having completely different leaf shapes lol Kept them in pots. All fruited, one was green the other two were purple. One was exceptionally tasty and then.....a few winters back the hubby was doing work on our cistern in the unheated sunroom and put the pots outside. I never noticed cause I'm not observant at all! I often get distracted by birds and shiney objects, but that's another thing....anyways first night -11, second night -13...figs were fried :( I kept them hoping they'd come back(wishful thinking I know lol) but by the end of July they had a date with the compost pile. So now the potted figs I currently have, I've only had for 1-3 years. They're all in root prunning pots and are doing extremely well :) The figs off the LSU purple this year were ridiculously good!!! I picked the first one when I was just kind of walking by, and before I knew it I was just standing there spaced out in tasty fig heaven!!
rcantor-I read about this Niagara Black/Longue D'Aout when I was searching good varieties for this region. Can this be planted and protected in ground? The man doesn't care if I add to my collection outside, he just doesn't want to compete with plants for floor space in the garage/unheated sunroom/basement. And me, if I could just live in a greenhouse.....

Greetings from Niagara Falls!!(the multicoloured money side) Love this forum and all invaluable information I've learned in such a small amount of time. Just wanted to post something so I felt like less of a lurker lol
Currently have a HC in the ground
And in pots
VdB
LSU purple
Stella
Peter's honey
Atreano
Desert King
Not allowed any more or my husband will figgin kill me. Having said that I do love the challenge of sneaking in plants and strategically clustering them to appear like there's less.
Thanks again for all the great reading on this forum :)
