My fig trees always stayed outside, they are planted in the ground. When I am honest never thought about bringing them in or cover them. We got down to 33F last night and everything is just fine. I have a lot of tropicals in the ground aswell, when they are fine at 33F, I wouldn`t worry about figs.Just my two cents.

Pieces from a old terra cotta pot. It holds water too, if you forget to water your plants ;)

The average is 39F but since we are in a heavily wooded area it stays warmer, not sure how much. But should be warm enough for any fig trees.

Haha.
mine will get a nice surprise then on Friday.
My argument is, I want to grow everything so it can go in the Ground next spring and the yard looks even more beautiful. So everything have a long growing season.

I would love to be able to sneak stuff in, but we both work from home. So Hubby always asked me, what I got there again. And that I had promised not to buy anymore plants this year. I just can`t help myself, when I see something I like I really really need to have it.

That is what they said about the tree that is cold tolerant. Just thought to give it a shot. But when they not really seem to know it themselfes then any avocado would be good to try out I guess. They sure created a hype around this variety.
You have your tree in the ground?

- Plant an avocado seed in the location where you want to have an avocado tree. Make sure the soil is fairly well draining (break up / amend as necessary). If you can find a Lula avocado (which are grown commercially in Texas) that is the best. Lulas are salt-tolerant and very vigorous. Actually the AZRFG chapter is trying to acquire some Lula seeds and if they become available, I will ship a couple to you.
- After the seed has sprouted, you want to keep it watered and provide some afternoon shade (if it ends up sprouting in summer/fall). Definitely baby it with partial noon shade and full afternoon shade if the temps are above 90-95 F while it is a seedling. On the flip side, also certainly protect it from the cold (keep it above freezing with either frost cloth or heat lamps / Christmas lights or both).
- After a few months the seedling will be a foot tall or so and be about pencil thickness. This is the perfect size for grafting
- I have an Aravaipa tree and can send you some budwood. Actually my tree is not doing great at the moment but assuming I can nurse it back to health I will be able to send you some budwood. You will want to do either a cleft graft if you can match up the calipers low on the stem or a veneer graft if the diameter mismatch is too great.

The Aravaipa is supposed to have a good cold tolerance, but I do not think anybody really knows how much it can take temperature wise. There is a report that the mother tree has had snow on it on suffered no ill effect. What is your USDA zone?

I have 1.5 Acre that should be enough. When not we need to buy the neighbor house lol.
I already started to get ride of some of the bushes. It is always a argument with my Hubby, cause he don`t like that when I do that. But I can use the native bushes until my plants are big enough and then they need to go.
Yes I tried it once before. Made a cut from my brown Turkey tree. I just sticked it in the dirt. I think it rooted before I forgot to water it. That was like last year ago, since then my thumb turned much greener.

Oh well that seems to be a bit different. I have my brown Turkey Fig tree now for like 3 years and never protected it. It haven`t died back, just went dormant. But for some reason is not doing so well. I assume to much water, cause I planted strawberries around it and watered each day.
Well I will see how it looks next year.
I just mulch my trees just real heavily with dead wood, woodchips and yard clippings. Works great.
How cold does it get normally in Bonham?

@Sas
I know Figs loose the leaves in the winter. But since I am creating a food forest on my property I mix all the plants with each other. So they still provide kinda of protection.

Thanks for all the welcoming.
Where are all the Texas folks located?

Hello,
I just joined the forum. I am Alexandra from central Texas. I grow a lot of fruit trees in my garden and looking for figs as my more cold hardy barrier to protect my more cold sensitive plants.
This year I got to try my first fresh fig from my LSU purple tree and was hooked. Looking forward to learn more about all the great varieties there are and want to collect them all :P
