Aww FicoParadiso, you are too kind. No idea what I have gotten into. Looked at the temperature and maybe I can start some cuttings still! But I know it gets cold earlier too... so not sure

I guess I will be spending quite some time at the nursery learning these new seasons.

Moving to Detroit, is there an economical way to ship a 5 foot tree(s) or should I just start over? I have maybe 6 1 gallons that I will take in my car as well or I may ship them, they don't quite fit in a large flat rate box.

With the recent and upcoming heat wave to LA, is it time to unplug my heat mat?

They are in a humidity bin on top of a heat mat. Temp inside my place will be in the upper 90s moving forward won't dip below 55. I may turn on the ac if it becomes unbearable and that may bring the temp to low 80s. All transplanted cuttings have moved outside already. Anything with any visible roots moved out of humidity bin to room temp just in case.

Thanks everyone... it would be silly to NOT move because of figs... but if you couple that with veggie gardening... the thought has crossed my mind

I'm trying to find the light in this situation and I guess I must work another angle.

So... I may be considering a relocation.. from zone 10a to 6a. To be honest, I don't know much outside of SF and LA.

I know that daylight hours are significantly longer in the summer in the areas to the north of the US. Does this affect growth of the fig tree at all? Does it allow for faster ripening versus a place like California? Or is the difference negligible? I understand that trees come out of dormancy later, but does the tree just take off because of the daylight?

You have to load the map before you leave the hotel. It will work with GPS so at least you know where you are and which way you need to travel. You will not be able to use it for searching on the run since you have no data. With a little bit of pre-planning and pinning of reataurants, landmarks, it allows for navigational wanderlust.

At the end of the day, you are on vacation. Enjoy it.. allow yourself to get lost a bit... and perhaps, shut down and allow your senses to take you places!

I usually turn my phone to airplane mode when I am international to conserve battery

You have to pay to get it programmed if you want it unlocked.

You can turn off the international roaming if you don't want to use it under settings.

What you can do is load the map area you need for the day then gps works. Most areas can use the function of "make it available offline" If you have this function, you can pin locations.

Thanks Blue! :P Although your exchange seemed a lot more fruitful (no pun intended) than the one I attended last weekend. I may have to put that one on my calendar next year!

I meant that more as a "I know the next steps" are to pot up when the cutting has rooted.
I have the following -
1) Cuttings that have roots touching the sides with green growth
2) Cuttings with lots of green growth and no signs of roots
3) Cuttings with lots and lots of roots and no signs of green growth
4) Cuttings that are still napping.

I wanted to move some out of the humidity bin, I guess it seems like an intermediate bin to ween them off their humidity withdrawals may be the best option and then pot them up after that.

rcantor, Will this affect the cuttings that aren't ready to acclimate?  Or will it just make them stronger?  I remove the lid for maybe 5-10 minutes 3x a day because I am curious and an overbearing fig mother looking for roots.

I may have been able to start my first cuttings!

I know that I should wait until the roots touch the side of the cup or the poly bag in order to pot them into a larger container (1 gallon?).

Since my cuttings are in a humidity bin, how do I acclimate the ones that are ready to be moved from humidity bin to real indoor air?  I know for seedlings, you usually just remove the top when the first one sprouts, but I don't think this is the case for fig cuttings.  Do I have to create an intermediate bin or do I pull them out for daily for few hours of playtime to harden them off?

Thanks!

Jen

Still seeding peas and lettuce right now in my winter/spring garden.

Trying to root some berries and finally put in a berry patch this year. By patch, I mean 1 15 foot row.

Tomatoes and peppers get started inside this weekend. I am 3 weeks late this year. I usually start about 16 different varieties of 4-6 plants and give away most of it, I keep 1 plant of maybe 8 varieties. I always buy 1 tomato plant anyways for planting Feb 1.

Rooting pomegranate cuttings, fingers crossed.

What else do I need?

I would like to add to my blueberry plants, interested in buying kiwi plants, graft the horrid apricot tree on the property, and get an apple tree. I may want a fig tree or five to add to the two that we have.

Blue,

Looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.

I've seen the Oroville O maybe 4 months ago on my Norcal camping expedition. I am excited to have a piece of my vacation even if its indirectly.

Its between the two, more than one but maybe less than the other? Its 18pcs carbon steel hole set and on the box it says for wood and for plastic. I even have the receipt, it was 10.99 in November 2015.

I believe they have a cheaper version but it wasn't carbon steel and was 10 pcs.

Not sure what kind of plastic but I second the $10 Harbor Freight one. I used it to cut holes in 2 gallon buckets and kitty litter buckets with no issue. The only problem is that they have been covered with some sort of grease so paper towels and lay newspaper down first.

I went back to go see it... since I only got to see it riding by at some mph. Its a very large tree, actually multiple trees. The older tree starts on the downslope. It has hundreds of little green figs on it, when cut open its white/peachy on the inside.... I could see where I took my branches and cut it off nicely so it wouldn't be so rough. There were some fresh wounds where people have taken cuttings recently and also not so fresh wounds.

I found another tree fairly close by in one of the parking lots of this park. It was behind a chain that said no parking so I didn't cross it, but that was a large tree as well. It looked like someone pruned it recently and left all the wood right next to it... sigh

Is it considered stealing if its in a public park? Little kids break off sticks and sword fight all the time! After some research, there are lots and the park tags fig trees for removal, so I could be doing it a service!

I went on a bike ride today... the first one since joining this forum last month. I've done this ride plenty of times... but this time, I lagged behind. Almost fell off my bike twice... because I kept looking for fig trees. I found 2 along the trail, both on public land and so I became obsessed with finding more along my ride tucked into this corner and that corner.

On the way home, it was dark and getting cold, we rode fast... I yelled and said I need a break... you know, I needed a break right next to one of the fig trees I saw. I couldn't see nor remember how to take my light off my bike, the bf says whats wrong are you okay? I lifted up my entire bike and shined it on the tree. He rolls his eyes and said wow theres a ton of figs still on the tree! He said you have 1 minute but starts riding off... he knows I hate riding at night and my rear bike light wasn't working which makes me more uneasy... I had to scramble, he carried the pack this time... I broke off 2 cuttings stuck it in my bike shorts and under my shirt and allowed it to scratch me up and down my back all the way home.

I got home and went straight to rooting, didn't feed the dog, never took off my helmet, got scolded for not putting my bike away and leaving it outside but I have these 2 unknown cuttings and I was happy.

Greenfig,

I will be attending Foothill for sure and am deciding between LA and OC. Have you been to LA or are you apart of that chapter? I'm really trying to find a chapter to join and LA chapter isn't actually in LA. I have some ties to OC so the trip out is a good excuse for a day trip but if you tell me LA is the place to be, I may sway that way.

I went there earlier this year when the trees were loaded with unripe figs. There's a good number of fig trees there, but most aren't labeled and when dormant, it would be hard to know what's what. A tree map isn't available either, unfortunately, which I couldn't resist asking about. Most of the figs are in the designated fig orchard, but there were one or two Panaches scattered in the main area near the entrance.

There are other orchards (apples, and so on), and a farm area for kids and families to enjoy, with animals one can feed, pet, and photograph.

I do wish I could visit a Bay Area exchange. But I will be visiting one or two Socal exchanges hoping to find some cuttings for my fig collection, make friends, and learn to graft. Next year, I may extend my holiday visit in SF to at least visit the working party prior to the exchange.

I am at my parents house (San Francisco) for the holidays and headed back to Los Angeles tomorrow morning. I read about this park on the forum..

Is it worth it to stop for a visit in Prusch Park in December? Should I wait for my next visit, when foliage and tasting opportunities may be available?

I usually take a different route but it's not terribly out of the way but of course, on any 6 hour drive, you just want to get home, avoid as much traffic as possible and minimize stops.

Subject: Planting tree in the ground? Replies: 2

So when is the best time to plant a fig tree in ground?

Since I rent, this decision is hard for me, but if I can take a cutting when I leave in a year or two and my collection looks like it is going to grow since joining this forum, I may be willing to gift my first tree here for future tenants to love.

I was told it was 3 years old when I bought it and so that would make it a 8 year old black mission and it produced 30 figs this year which to me is amazing. Its starting to take a branching shape but all the branches are pencil size. I probably have been doing something wrong, hence why I am here and am wondering if I plant it in ground if both me and my tree will be happier?

If I plant it, will it just take off for me to enjoy this coming year? Do I need to root prune it? Any special things to take into consideration when I do plant it? Or is it better to start with a new tree instead of this one since its been in a container its whole life and may be stunted?

Is rooting this variety different from other cane berries? I was under the impression all cane berries root by sticking the end of a plant into a pot of soil. I have done this for raspberries, olallies, and boysenberries.

Sad to say all my berries are still at my old community garden plot (i hope) and the ones I did take with me never made it, it got too hot before I could get them in the ground.

I am amazed by everyone's kindness and how welcoming everyone is on this forum. Thank you so much! I am excited to learn and grow and wished I had joined sooner. I can't wait to start my first cuttings and for them to grow into productive trees. I hope to one day be able to share what I have with other members as well as my own community just as you all have been so generous with your knowledge and so much more.

Thank you again!

Happy Holidays!

Hi, i am new to the forum.

I ate my first fig 5 years ago and fell in love. I bought a black mission fig tree and grew it in a pot in the common area of my apartment building. I would eat the one or two figs it would produce and eventually none since other people started picking them. I ended up community gardening and developing a love for growing my own food with no space for trees. Four years later, I have moved and now have my own yard (still renting). I purchased another fig tree (panache) with hopes to taste one of these next year.

I now want to taste anything and everything I can get my hands on. I visit farmers markets buying more figs than one can possibly eat. I have named one of my backyard chickens figgy. I have come to believe my black mission is not a black mission.

Anyways, I would love to start my own collection, rooting cuttings, hoping to one day plant these figs into my yard when I am able to own property, and would love to eventually give my extra rooted cuttings away to places like community gardens and guerilla gardens.

If anyone has cuttings, I would love to purchase them. Please PM me. I would love to hear your story, your taste, your favorites, what I need to have, etc. Common, rare, any variety to start my collection. I live in Los Angeles and while I don't think fig cuttings are like seeds, but I'm sure some extra cold hardy varieties just won't taste as good here.

Happy Holidays!
