It seems to me you are overthinking the whole process. Go to home depot and get a 1 dollar plastic shoe box with lid and a 3 dollar bag of orchid peat moss just dampen an throw in the cuttings. just damp not wet. And leave them alone for at least a week then start checking. If you squeeze a handful of moss and water comes out, way to moist.

Access to lots of orchards is definitely a bonus.

Just fill the cloner with water until the bottoms are touching the water. As soon as the power comes back on take the water back out.

Yes Andy there are 50 varieties of chinense and pubes species that I usually start beginning of January because they require such a long season to fruit. I am going to sow another 30 to 40 varieties in the next few days of annuums, baccatum an frutescens. St. Patty's day i will start tomatoes.

It is very exciting to see the figs rooting and seedlings breaking the top of the soil.

Finally got room number 2 organized enough for a pic.  I have 11 cuttings that I just put into cups 1 from cloner and 10 from the shoeboxes with damp moss.

Took a look in the cloner after work today and have a couple more starting to show roots.  So far though it seems like the damp moss is out performing my cloners. We will see.

Seeing first roots in cloner (fig roots) and in damp moss boxes only 14 days.

Panachee first one to root in cloner nothing on any of the  rest yet but hoping they will start popping roots quickly.

Should I leave in cloner till roots get longer or can I take out now and start putting in cups?

Should I have direct light on the cuttings in cloner as soon as I put them in or is indirect light good. I know what type of light to use just not sure of the right time to add the light.

Andrew, Andy, you are both enablers among others and I thank you all for it. Drew51, when I met you and your wife I thought I heard her say something about you should buy more lights and tear down the garage so you could accommodate more trees and berries.

With this head I started with just the red but added the blues due to just barely missing the ends it is now a little overkill but excellent coverage.

Again, no glue on the pvc. 20160207_164033_resized.jpg

Great thread. Thought I would throw out a couple pics of my new cloner sprinkler heads. Started out with just the two heads on the ends but just did not quite get the middle, then after putting in the two blue spinning 360's they alone would have been enough. Great coverage.  Pvc is not glued.

i have never done it but wouldn't it be ok to wrap roots in newspaper saturate the paper and put in ziplock.  Since I am a newbie to figs I do not know the sensitivity of their root structure but I would be willing to pay shipping if you wanted to experiment.

Apalermo88, everyone I know thinks I'm a little nuts when it comes to gardening.

Bunti, I feel your pain. I don't even know how my mind strayed from ordering more apple trees, BB's, another grape vine, blackberries and raspberries. I really honestly don't remember and it's only been a couple of weeks into this fig endeavor and I'm already at 32 varieties.

Whether or not they all see the spring sunshine is another story.

Ok, I have quite a few cuttings now and was hoping to get them in the cloner tonight. What is the procedure for getting these in the cloner, just wash in bleach solution and stick em in.

Some are a little long can I cut them down?

Should I cut the bottom to give the cutting a fresh rooting end?

I am no stranger to using a cloner, just to cloning figs.

Thanks
Dale

Lewi, do they rot on the bottom of the tomato?

To be honest your not going to be able to tell the difference if it is hotter because you are not going to be able to eat any of the hot chinense species peppers anyway. A Jalapeno is between 2 and 5k Scoville units and the weakest hot pepper I sent you is around 100k Scoville units, the guineas world record Carolina Reaper is 2million. Peppers like it dry though for sure.

Glad you got them. You do realize that both tomato and pepper growing is another addicting thing.  There are over 10k diff. tomatoes and around 6-7k pepper varieties.

Hope you and your family enjoy.

Some of the hotter ones your fiancé wanted require between 7-8 months to produce ripe fruit so sow accordingly but you can grow all year long, yes?

Sounds good on your end.

Little white hairs from the leaf are what you are seeing. the deformation of the leaves resembles an aphid infestation but like I said there is not a bug on any of these plants. I will look closely for a couple more days. I have neem oil, I will mix up a bit and use it on them.

When I got these rooted cuttings about 10 days ago the looked fine but now I am having some issues. The new growth seems to be deformed and some of the older leaves are cupping upward.

One plant has what looks to be a egg sack or something. Whatever is happening it's not normal. DSCN1922.JPG

If anyone needs to identify some of the varieties here are a couple of databases that may be useful.

I couldn't agree more with drew, growing fruit of all kinds is very rewarding. I am new to the fig growing and only have 3 very small trees at this time but am hoping to have around 30 varieties growing in the yard this year along with my peaches, blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, alpine strawberries, and 30+ varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Then there is the 150 varieties of peppers this year.  And the watermelons.

My friends and family say I need help with this addiction called gardening……..I always agree with them and tell them to come over and pull weeds. DCP_3017.jpg
