Subject: Another Fig ID thread? Replies: 0

I am wondering if anyone can help ID this fig, tree produces fruit in late July in SW Louisiana, then looses most of its leaves around the first week of September.   Sorry about the less than great example, but we had a lot of rain around harvest time this year and much of the fruit split or soured on the tree.  Leaves have mostly 3 to 5 lobes, but vary in exact shape.  thanks, ps I have 2 cuttings of this tree which have been in the ground for about a decade and are growing very slowly, larger one is only about 8 ft tall and maybe 4 ft across.  Oldest larger one has good shape about 15 ft tall  x 20 ft wide, but is over 20 years old. figsm.jpg

Probably not, I give it a 20% chance, I know it will be much smaller than in previous years when it was in Baton Rouge, all I know is this is posted on the LSU ag page calendar "May 19, Olive and Fig Field Day at the Hammond Research Station, Hammond"  If there is more information I have not found it.

Will you be going to the LSU field day featuring figs in Hammond in a few weeks?

Does anyone know of a good retail nursery where I can buy fig tress in South central or South West Louisiana (say as far east as Baton Rouge, or west to Beaumont TX).  It seems all the local and big box store places only carry the Sason Becnel grown varieties (LSU Purple, LSU Gold, Celeste and Brown Turkey).  I already have young LSU Purple and Gold trees planted this year as well as a variety of suspected Celeste mature and semi-mature trees (all from same tree cuttings).  I would like to add a little more variety next year though.  (I am in west central Louisiana near the zone 8b/9a line, but fairly commonly travel all along I-10 from Houston to Baton Rouge)

Thanks Ike

p.s. I am mainly looking for larger nursery grown trees now, not small cuttings as I have my hands full enough dealing with various cuttings already.

Hope you get better soon, I can sympathize with your pain, I broke my back in 2010, also a dog induced accident (we met each other at a blind corner, he (120 pound mastiff) was at full gallop, not his fault I had been calling him and thought he was the other direction, and I landed on bricks wrong too).  Your break does not look bad to my untrained eye, mine was what was described as a split compression fracture of L2 (a rare type from what I have found in my research), basically the vertebral body cleaved just about in half right down the middle top to bottom.  I spent 4 months in a full turtle shell brace, and am just now getting back close to being 100% a bit over 5 years later.  There were numerous landmarks along the way, first time being able to bend down and get something off the ground, first time getting out of bed without rolling onto my side first, first time catching something that tried to blow away in the wind, first time running (meaning more than 2 or 3 rapid steps, still not any real distance, but I never was much of a runner...

We do get a lot of rain, but the location where the fig tree is planted is not a low wet area, I live about 100 miles inland 150 - 200 ft above sea level and the terrain is mostly slow rolling hills, fig tree is planted on gentle slope of a hill about 200 feet from the top of the hill and maybe 500 to the creek at the base of the hill.

It should not have any weed eater or lawn mower damage, at least nothing recent, there is a T post driven next to it to mark its position so it does not get mowed down.  I think I will try to fertilize it this year, measure it again at the end of the year and perhaps transplant it next winter when it is dormant.  Honestly with its location it has been sort of out of sight out of mind, however I planted a couple of rows of blackberries (Osage and Ouchita ) about 75 feet from it last month and have been watering them using the garden spigot that near the fig tree.

I am a bit hesitant to move it at this point due to the unknown root condition and time of year with green buds starting (Zone 8b Louisiana) also I currently have a batch of clones from the same parent tree rooting.  Parent tree is about 10-12 feet tall and about 12-15  feet wide (limbs grow out 5-8 feet from the trunk), and is probably 20 years old, certainly no more than 30 (house was built in 1986)    I don't think proximity to the mid size pear tree is an issue yet, but may become one if it does grow bigger in the current location.      Given the size and age of the parent tree I have to also wonder if this is a slow growing fig.

Ike

p.s.    I just went out and measured it at 17 inches tall with a fork about 12 inches off the ground, tip buds are green.    Native soil pH is just below 7 in most of the yard. ground has slight slope and drains fairly well

I have a fig tree of unknown variety grown from a cutting of another of my fig trees.  The problem is it is about 5 years old and is still only a knee high stem less than an inch in diameter with no branches.  Before you ask, yes it is still alive, and has the start of some green buds.  I know its location is not ideal as it is planted a bit close to a pear tree (12-15 feet), it is in the back part of a large backyard so has not been given the attention that the fruit trees near the house have.  Still I am not sure what to do with it, any suggestions?

You may want to check out Simmons Plant farm in Arkansas, they sell a variety of 1 and 2 year old blueberries.  I have bought bare root blackberries from them and have been overall happy with them, although some of the varieties I received were better quality (larger, more roots) than others all have grown. I don't know how their prices compare on Blueberries, but it seems very good on the varieties of Blackberries I have bought (about 30% lower than other web sites), in the case of the blackberries I have bought they seem to send 1 extra of each type to cover loss. (order 5 get 6, order 10 get 11).

I suspect you will see a considerable amount of visible growth for every 24 hours you leave them in

So how is everyone potting up their rooted cuttings when they come out of the cloner, and how much root development are you allowing the the cloner before potting?

I have used this method on citrus, and so far so good, but recently I read an online suggestion to use C7 or C9 Christmas lights, these are 5 or 9 watt bulbs and sold typically in chains of 25, the advantage is they are wired so that if one bulb goes out the rest of the chain keeps working, and heat is heat it does not matter if it is from 1 250 watt bulb or 50 5  watt bulbs.

Well my cuttings are not looking good, I am at day 15 with the ultrasonic fogger and only 2 stems have just the smallest hint of roots forming with no visible change to them in the last 2 days.  If I don't see progress in another 4 or 5 days I am thinking about tossing them and starting over changing a few details, cycle timer, etc.

Calcium Hyopochlorite has a net effect of being almost pH neutral, however it will initially cause a pH spike which will then drop as the chlorine is consumed in organic reactions.and out gasing.

p.s. I too have cuttings in a cloner, in my case I have 12 cuttings in a home built tote cloner with an ultrasonic fogger plugged into a temperature controlled outlet box set to cut out if temperature of the water reaches 82F, temperature tends to stay around 75 F except in the afternoon sun when it may cut off on overheat from time to time (room temp ranges from 70-75F).  I am on day 9 so am hopeful I will start to see some action soon.  I have searched many threads here and never could find any information on optimal temperature, so I thought under 82F is probably safe based on other plants.
