A friend of mine got this cutting from one of his neighbors today. The neighbor thought it was an LSU Gold. The fig shape and leaf patterns are different from the LSU gold. Any ideas?

All 3 trees did well in full sun today. No burns or damage.

I'm testing out 3 small trees that are in full sun. I'll know more tomorrow.

Will the liquid copper fungicide burn the leaves of my figs in heat like neem oil? Or is the temperature not a factor?

Thank you! I had one root yesterday - I'll move them inside and give it a try.

Thanks!!

I'll keep my fingers crossed and give them time.

I have a few more cuttings - any rooting suggestion that might have a higher success rate for the MBVS?

Wow- Several months... I wasn't expecting that. These cuttings will be small trees without roots. Should I cut the leaves off?

I've read that MBVS can be difficult to root. I started 4 other varieties at the same time and all are exploding with roots, except MBvs. I'm using spagnum moss in plastic containers. The cuttings are leafing out without roots.
should I score the cuttings?
Does MBVS like cooler temps for rooting?
Cut the leaves?

Maybe I'm being impatient and just need to wait it out longer.

Thanks Matt

Wouldn't this exterior painting dramatically lower the temps as well?  I realize that the bamboo looks great, but it seems like a lot of work and expense.

Andrew
I purchased the bamboo fencing at HD for 10 dollars. I wrapped one 30 gallon SIP pot and about four #3 pots all in about 20 minutes time. It wasn't bad.

I tried this same thing.  Made sort of a 'space blanket' for the pots and feel that it did absolutely nothing.

I remember that someone on the forum did a temperature trial some time ago.  Testing the daytime and nighttime temps of pots made from different materials.  I think terra-cotta performed the best.  Don't remember how it turned out but it was a very good thread.

What is happening to your figs that you're trying to protect the pots from the sun?

We had a lot of rain recently and the soil was saturated. The pots that I wrapped are in full sun, and were hot to touch. I was trying to lighten the color of the pots in an attempt to cool them a bit. Seems to be working well for me, although I haven't done any temp tests.

In one pot, you could use a second layer of bamboo to be more efficient at hiding and shading the dark container .

I agree...

I did a second layer on a few to block more sun. I had an issue on areas were the bamboo is loose falling out. So I'm going to hot glue a small ribbon to the length.

I purchased a roll of bamboo fence from HD ( $10 ) to wrap my potted figs in black pots - trying to protect from heating up in direct sun.
I kept the the bamboo fence in the package and cut to desired length. Pretty easy....seems to be working great and looks better than wrapping in foil.

Not sure if it will stand the test of summer heat - only time will tell.

I woke this morning with quite a few leaves that turned a brownish color - like the leaves tarnished.
A few of my figs look unaffected. Regardless, I put all in full shade and washed them with fresh water.

Any suggestions or advise?

Thanks Matt

I thought I would try the soap - water mixture first over neem oil - thought it would be safer with all the hot weather we've had.

Other than the high possibility of leaf damage and losing a bunch of leaves, would the fig bounce back with new growth?

I wanted to introduce myself. I'm a newbie to figs and definitely caught the bug. My collection is growing rapidly! I have purchased from a few members here on eBay. I have been extremely impressed with the quality, health and care taken to protect the figs for shipping.
I look forward to meeting you in conversations. I'm sure I'll be posting questions in the not so distant future.

Matt
