Subject: Mold on cutting leaves Replies: 5

I'm by no means an expert like more veteran members here, but I thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

I don't bother with a humidity chamber anymore.  I either 1. fully bury my cutting in the substrate or 2. parafilm the top inch or two of tip cuttings.

In your instance, I would just snip off and discard that leaf if it is mold.  You could try a fungicide regimen to combat the mold going forward.  I use a homemade chamomile tea spray as a preventative.  Neem oil can be harsh on young cuttings.

Good luck!

The biggest takeaways for the newly Fig Fevered: sloooooow down, start on inexpensive cuttings and don't try to collect everything so soon or else risk burning out--all things I can relate to.  It's nice to hear this side of things.

Thanks for the input!  How much wattage should I be looking at?

For those who don't think they can keep up a regimen of tea every day but are already in the habit of taking medicine each day, I would suggest fig leaf capsules.

The interesting thing about that garment wrack is that the top bar moves all the way down to the darker part of the vertical bars.  Easy height adjustment.  I'm thinking that $12 wrack and 2 of these $9 LED flood lights?  Duct tape some reflective $1 Mylar blankets together and you've got a party--a fig rooting party.  :)

I was considering using a cheap garment wrack like the one below and hanging a shop light from it on chains to use as a grow room setup for cuttings--perhaps a plastic sheet to keep temp regulated in my mild winter climate. I'd love to see how you all are set up.  Feel free to share pics.  Thanks!

Subject: Badly Infected Trees - To Keep or Not to Keep Replies: 23

I just wanted to give an update to this post to perhaps encourage others not to give up on their badly infected trees.  This is the same VdB(UCD) today.  It grew completely new growth that started under the soil line.  You can still actually see the old growth still stunted at the base.  I took everyone's advice and did the following:

1.  Up-potted.  It went from a 1gal to 3gal and used 5-1-1 in this one.

2.  The roots looked sickly, so prior to up-potting, I root pruned and shook off existing potting mix. I also soaked the bare root plant in water with Superthrive and Tappin Roots All Stages for maybe 20 minutes.

3.  Added Mykos to the roots when up-potted.

4.  More fertilization and nutrients.  I initially added 1 scoop of Osmocote Plus and a handful of lime and worm castings per gal of 5-1-1.  I also began fertigating with very dilute measures of each Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro + Protekt + Superthrive with daily watering.  Then I started following ascpete's suggested dose of Ironite and Garden-Tone.  Things really took off with this combination.  Thank you all for the help.  I really did almost throw this one away.  Glad I didn't!

Black Madeira has a nasty reputation of being a slow grower, but no one told this not so little guy the news. I rooted this from a cutting back in May and this is it now in a 3 gal SWC.  She's even trying to fruit.  This late into October, I'm unsure if I should keep them on or not.  I'm also wondering if it's too late in the season and is the trunk too green for air layering both the main stem half way up and the side growth?

Well, I think I've found the vile little creature that's been eating holes in my fig leaves, or at least one of the creatures.  This morning I found that now my Figo Preto's been chewed on too.  I looked under the leaf and found this caterpillar.  I also remembered that I've been seeing a lot of moths hanging around my figs lately.

Is this a fungus, too much sunshine, over-fertilizing or a critter doing this to the leaves?

Vigorous indeed!  I managed to grow a cutting originating from your strain and it's growing about 4 to 6 inches a week here in Southern California with no signs of slowing down.

1.  Were you given a verbal or written notice to vacate?  I have family who are landlords in your state and they must go through legal hurdles with ample notice and court dates given to non-compliant tenants prior to eviction and Sheriff removal.

2.  What kind of thieves would even take or know the value of a fig tree?

At the heart of this, it sounds like a legal matter more than anything.  Even cash transactions for rent payment, cash and labor spent on said ex-friend's property are admissible in court.

No figs to give you, but you might want to follow up on this legal matter with a qualified attorney if what you say transpired is the case.

That's a very healthy way to think about it.  Unfortunately, I'm fig crazy.  LOL!  I was (still am) trying for 100% success rate on this round of cuttings.

A few of cuttings I have rooting have top growth that is shriveling up and falling off  First, the noticeable limping of the shoot, the yellowing of what once was vibrant green and now its reduced down to this below.  Is this some fig form of damping off?  How do you resolve this?

For context, I have them rooting in promix in long 3"x10" baggies with holes along the bottom corners and up the sides.  Exposed top wrapped in parafilm.  I bottom water.

I noticed this Sucrette (UCD) swelling a week ago.  Yesterday it was beginning to droop.  It was soft but not quite at optimum droopage yet.

This morning it had drooped a bit more and looked more dehydrated.

This delicious little treat is a Sucrette (UCD).  It was rich, not watery, as sweet as candy and had a fragrant honey crossed with sweet potato pie filling (minus the spices) kind of flavor and mouth-feel.  I don't know how else to describe it.  I know the Baud variant is more desired, but don't discount the UCD variety.  It's delicious and it's been a dependable, prolific little tree for me.  :)

Subject: Question About the Importance of Up-Potting in the Same Mix Replies: 5

How important is it to up-pot in the same type of mix for container figs?  Some people seem to think it's important enough to wash off the root ball bare prior to placing it in a different potting mix ratio.  Is it necessary to do this?

I'm wondering if I should keep some of my UCD trees that have the worst FMV symptoms  (slow growth, badly deformed leaves) in the hopes that they grow out of it or should I just dispose of them and start fresh with a different source?  I'm also taking into account the health of my other trees.

I've been sealing my pinches with Super Glue to stop the sap bleed.  I've been doing this on my test Sucrette for a few months now, with no visible harm to the tree so far.  Just one or two drops and the sap bleed is contained.

Perhaps the elder statesmen on Figs4Fun can chime in if this is just a bad idea using Super Glue instead of Elmers wood glue?

I use it at a 1/4th dilution along with Dyna-Gro Foliar Pro in my potted fig, citrus and avocado regimen.  I have a Col de Dame from UCD that seems to be growing new, more normal looking leaves and perhaps growing out of its FMV deformed leafing since starting the fertigation.  I can't say it's the Pro-Tekt for sure, but it's certainly not hurting things.  Tom from Dave Wilson Nursery recommended it to me a few years back.

Let them adjust to their new environment slowly by increasing their light gradually (cover the clear cups to prevent the roots from overheating) over a couple weeks before transplanting to new containers.

Getting the plant out of the cup without damaging the roots can be tricky. If the roots are not holding all the potting mix together it can break apart and possibly kill the cutting if all the roots are pulled off. When I was still using cups I liked to get them out before the roots made full circles around the cup because I will never root prune that close to the tree so it could be a permanent defect. But maybe some circled roots don't bother you though and you'd like to wait until the rootball is very firm so there is less of a chance to fumble.

Great information!  I don't know if this was good or bad to do, but I've been setting them outside under shade where direct sun doesn't hit for a week now.  I bring them in at night.  They were never in a humidity chamber since I've always had mold issues with that.  At this stage, would you say up-pot or not?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if these Black Madeira cuttings should be up-potted yet or wait a while?  Any other suggestions welcome as well.  Thanks in advance!

In the side view below, the cups on the left and middle have roots on one side of the cup only.  The one on the right has roots on two sides of the cup.
