The same thing can be seen in the backyard chicken world. Chicks from some of the most reliably productive and/or tasty breeds can be had for a few dollars all day long, but it's not unusual for newly imported and introduced breeds from Europe to sell for twenty or thirty times that. After a year or two, when 2nd and 3rd generation chicks start hitting the online market the price drops dramatically. By that time, the new rare breed jackpot is right there lined up to take its place.

I live in the same hardiness zone as you and have been seeking out varieties that should have the attributes you are looking for. I got a few of these unknowns from Aaron a few weeks ago. They should fit the bill and have all started rooting very quickly and easily.

I have a nursery near me that grows their mother plants in those containers and it works very well. They put them right by the entrance to the nursery with the smaller trees that are for sale nearby and it's an impressive sight when they are loaded with figs. For someone with a forklift and winter storage space that can be driven into, it's a great system for large trees and moving them around couldn't be easier.
